Bergen place is a small park in the Ballard area of Seattle. This park celebrates the historic contributions of Scandinavian Americans, their cultures and the relationship between Seattle and her sister city of Bergen in Norway. The park is at the intersection of Leary Ave., 22nd Ave. and Market St. forming a triangular shape. One of the first things you notice are the very large modern sculptures of installation of Witness Trees. The witness trees have elements of Nordic mythology, Native American heritage and maritime history. They dwarf all of the other elements of the park. In 2005 they installed five granite, rune-like stones carved by artist James Cole with traditional Scandinavian weaving and embroidery patterns. Each stone features the name of a different Nordic country carved both in English and in the country's native language. At the far end of the park are all of the flags of the Scandinavian nations... Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland and Denmark. The flags are flying very close to the end of the park where the murals are. The panel on the left symbolizes the relationship between the city of Seattle and the city of Bergen in Norway. In the mural you can see a young Norwegian and American girl holding hands symbolizing the friendship between the two countries, cities and our people. Behind the two girls you can see the gifts exchanged by the two cities, Seattle sent a totem and Bergen sent us the flag of the city of Bergen. Ballard's ties to the past are represented in the center Panel and portrays the city hall of Ballard from 1890 -1907 and a parade of children. The lumber and fishing industries are portrayed in the left and right panels. There is also an image of Pastor Haavik blessing the fleet as it heads out of Fishermans Terminal shown in the far right panel. The Fisherman's Memorial is also depicted behind the image of the pastor. The mural was dedicated in 1995 by the King and Queen of Norway. The park is a nice place to sit and relax it there really isn't anywhere to get out of the sun and sit in the shade. There is a curved series of benches and you can also sit on the rune stones. Since place to sit and people watch in Ballard or meet friends.

Kerry Park is amazing on a sunny day. If you are feeling ambitious and want a good workout I…read morerecommend walking up from Lower Queen Anne. The last time I did this my Apple Watch said I had climbed what is equivalent to 22 flights of stairs. The final stretch is steep and your legs will definitely know that you earned the view. The beautiful flowers and trees also make the walk worth it during the spring and summer months. There is a nice resting area at the top. I am also happy to now see snack vendors setting up here because a cold drink really helps before walking back down. As someone who lives in the area I would not drive up. Street parking is limited and always seems to be full. The hunt for parking might become its own workout. I am not sure if it is officially part of the park but there is also a playground for kids a few sets of steps downhill. Do not forget to walk over to Parsons Gardens to see the flowers during the summer. You should also stop at Marshall Park for views of Elliott Bay and the cruise ships on a clear day. The walk along the West Queen Anne retaining walls also offers beautiful scenic views. Kerry Park is a must visit in Seattle. It is also a great local walk to enjoy with your dog friends.

Extra points if you visit around sunset. It's small and parking is limited. Be prepared to park and walk - especially if you visit during peak times.

Please note that Discovery Park Visitor Center is closed until Summer 2027 so I feel like this…read morereview is somewhat incomplete. However, this park is so amazing I think I can rate it 5/5 stars without needing to visit the visitor center! Discovery Park is Seattle's largest park and has amazing views of the Cascade and the Olympic Mountain ranges. You can head down to the tidal beaches to look at sea critters if you time it during a very low tide, or visit any time to hike and admire the forest, cross the open meadows, and listen to the streams crisscrossing the park. There's even a lighthouse! During summer season, there's a free shuttle bus Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to help you get around the park, as it's so large some people might be put off by the distances needed to walk around the various points of interest.

A Seattle Gem with Breathtaking Views!…read more Discovery Park is hands down one of the most beautiful spots in Seattle. My husband grew up in Magnolia, so he took me here for a hike last weekend, and I was completely blown away. We explored the south side and walked the Loop Trail. The path is well-maintained and offers stunning panoramic views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains. It's hard to believe you're still within the city limits! It's the largest park in the city, so there is plenty of space to enjoy nature. Whether you want a serious hike or just a peaceful stroll to see the water, this is the place to go. Don't forget your camera--the scenery is post-card perfect!
