Prior to getting pregnant I always knew I was going to use a doula. I am a nurse and sometimes knowing too much about something (I.e childbirth) isn't always a good thing. I decided I wanted to hire a doula so I could have someone who always had my best interest at the forefront and could help me advocate for the childbirth experience that was best for my baby and myself. I had always dreamed of an unmedicated childbirth but baby girl had other plans! I share this mainly in hopes to shed light on possible misconceptions that you only need a doula if you go the unmedicated route. My baby was breech throughout my pregnancy. Stephanie helped guide me to finding a Chiropractor certified in Webster technique, an acupuncturist who specializes in fertility, and was always just a text away with any questions I ever had about anything. Baby girl never turned and a c section was scheduled. A few days prior I went into labor naturally and Stephanie dropped everything to meet me at the hospital. I was absolutely petrified of the spinal tap but she advocated for me and was able to come into the OR while it was placed which was a HUGE relief. During recovery Stephanie was there helping me establish breastfeeding in that "golden hour" and stayed until we were all settled in our room. My birth did not go as originally planned but it was such a beautiful experience regardless and I know Stephanie was a HUGE reason for that. If you are on the fence about hiring a doula, this is your sign to DO IT. I am eternally grateful for Stephanie (my husband as well) and can't wait until we get to worth together again with Baby number 2-hopefully a VBAC! ;)

When I became pregnant for the second time, I immediately started searching for a doula to help me with my goal of healing a vbac with my son. I had a very traumatic experience with my daughter's birth (a c-section in NYC in April 2020 where I had to recover without my husband thanks to COVID) and I was determined to have a different experience the second time. During the consultation with Stephanie, I knew she was the perfect fit. She validated all my feelings about my first birth and I left the call feeling so empowered. Throughout my pregnancy, she was a sounding board for all my questions and helped me mentally as much as physically. She helped me compile lists of questions that were important for vbacs and was always there to check-in after appointments with my OB. When labor started hot and heavy, she came over quickly to help me manage debilitating back labor. Thanks to her support, I was able to stick it out at home way longer than I would have been able to and I showed up at the hospital 8cm dilated - a huge mental victory! My OB was on vacation and the OB on call gave me a hard time about trying for a vbac. Stephanie was kind but fierce as she advocated for me. I was able to focus on my body and my baby, knowing she had my back and wouldn't let any unnecessary inventions take place. Not only was my son born by the most beautiful vbac, Stephanie helped me start my breastfeeding journey off successfully in the recovery room. The pictures she took of his birth are unreal and I'm SO happy to have them to look back on. This was something I wouldn't have thought I wanted and I'm forever grateful for the memories. I'm sure there are many amazing doulas but Stephanie treated me and my family like her family. She brought special art activities for me to do with my daughter to help her prepare for her brother's birth. Every interaction felt so comfortable and I left feeling so empowered. She was such a special part of my son's birth and I will always be grateful to her!

I love Stephanie! She was my doula for a Thanksgiving 2017 baby! We just had our first baby, and Stephanie made my birthing experience really positive. I do not know if I could have made it through the pushing phase of my labor without Stephanie's guidance (holding my hands and legs and her positive coaching!). Stephanie also provided tons of pre-labor support (via home visits) and post-labor support. She is super attentive and would check in on me throughout the whole process and post process without ever being intrusive. Just the right thing touch. Stephanie really cares about your birthing experience and I am so happy I found her and I am so happy she was part of our birthing experience. I love this woman to the moon and back.

After working with her during the birth of our daughter, I cannot imagine it being any different At first, I was a little wary of having a third person in the room during the birth, because I wanted to be the main source of support for my wife. But, at our first meeting, Afshan put those concerns to rest and continued to do so by truly serving as support for me and for my wife. She did what we needed to make sure the process was as smooth as possible, while making us both feel honored and vital. It was really great to have that kind of support so that if I needed a rest, I could do that and then come back as a better partner. In addition, having Afshan there with us was really helpful because of her excellent relationships with the staff at the hospital. The fact that she had worked with the nurses and doctors there was very helpful in relaying information, getting what we needed, and in working together as a team when it was time to push. Afshan is truly a wonderful doula. I would recommend her to anyone.

By the final session, we felt much more knowledgeable about pre- and postnatal care and genuinely prepared to welcome our baby. We also really appreciated the sense of community and the additional resources the class provides. Can't recommend it enough!

Today on his first birthday I…read morecan't just help thinking of Myla as she played such an essential role on my son's birth. I was lucky to have a smooth pregnancy over the course of the nine months and had a very clear idea about my birth preferences. However, I was concerned about the strict protocol of the main hospitals of New York City. My husband and I are both Italian and birthing process in Italy is different than here. So, we started looking into doulas and interviewed quite a few of them. Myla was the one who impressed us the most. With her calm and peaceful manners but also her deep knowledge on anything related to birth, we both felt she was the right doula to assist us. Myla was really crucial in giving birth of my baby. I had a natural birth and my son weighted 11lb 10oz: a shocking news for everyone especially since I was able to deliver him naturally and with no C section. Having a natural birth was my main wish but I am aware I wouldn't been able to accomplish that without Myla's support. She helped with breathing, soothing massage and expert touch to get my baby in a lower position. My husband was engaged all the time and the three of us literally 'worked' as a team over the long hours of labor and then pushing. Myla reminded us to take our time before rushing into any decision and we truly felt reassured with her on our side. I remember one of the most experienced nurses praising on Myla as she pointed out how lucky we were on having such a knowledgable and passionate doula assisting us (and I guess she had seen quite a few over the years). And yes, we truly felt blessed in having Myla on our side. The process was painful, I won't lie, but without Myla I would not have been able to deliver my baby without a C section. I'm glad I was able to safely accomplish my wish. After my son was born Myla took the time to make sure my baby latched and she even took so many pictures of the three of us during those first moments as we wished to have a memory of those. We could count on Myla even after the birth experience, as we met her again a few days after leaving the hospital to provide guidance and helpful advice with our newborn. "Grazie Myla!" - You were a precious gift to our family.

Myla was an incredibly kind, supportive guide through my pregnancy process. She helped me cut through the noise of opinions and blogs and provided the resources to know what and how to talk to my birth team (doctor, hospital, partner, etc). Pregnancy can be a roller coaster of emotions and even fears and Myla helped navigate what questions we would potentially want to ask and how to ask those questions to empower ourselves to make the right decisions. My confidence when it came time to enter into the actual birth I can absolutely attribute to Myla. During my birth itself, Myla was there to help me have a positive experience. Whether it was soothing massage to ease labor pains at home, or just reminding me in the hospital to ask for time to think about choices that I needed to make, her focus and incredible knowledge and many years of birth experience made everything easier. I felt confident that I was making the right choices because Myla was there with me. After the birth Myla continued to be a crucial resource. She is a lactation consultant and guided me in the breastfeeding process. In the hospital she got my supply started and helped me navigate challenges that continued once I was home Myla's full continuity of care from pregnancy to newborn is invaluable. I experienced curve balls throughout the entire time and was able to navigate everything and ultimately have a successful confident experience thanks to Myla.

Ok, that is fine. I understand that. We rescheduled for the next night. 15 min past the hour, I messaged her and asked if she was coming since she still wasn't at our apartment. She messaged back 45 min later, "No, not tonight." What! not tonight?? What does that even mean? I have never had a professional message me something with such a laissez-faire attitude. That may not seem like a big deal by rescheduling one appointment last minute and then not showing up to another. However, I would not want that from my doula. What if I was in labor and couldn't get in touch with her, or she just dropped the ball because she was tired from previous labor and didn't attend? I think it's important to communicate and even overly communicate with prenatal and especially clients later in their pregnancy. I want to be clear that we didn't hire Lisa as a doula for labor, only for prenatal sessions. However, we strongly considered hiring her as our labor doula and are very disappointed with this outcome. Also, my feedback for the prenatal 1:1 sessions is that they are not customized for your birth. We wanted to focus on when the baby comes home, and we did two x2 hour-long sessions and never touched on that. Lisa also moves slowly through the material. There is wasted time rather than moving through the material in a structured manner. I found myself getting frustrated by the amount of time we spent on side conversations rather than the material at hand. At times it felt awkward. I wish our experience with TBC was different.
