I grabbed a quick bite to eat in Terminal 4 of JFK. Typically, I *love* all-you-can-eat sushi, and I get a craving for raw salmon, so I gave in and picked up a premade sushi tray. Food: Salmon Samurai Combo *Sigh* For $18.50 ($16.99+NY tax), I received 8 pieces of sushi that had been hand-made fresh, that morning. (For reference, I had this at 6 PM). - The salmon was thickly sliced (which would have been pleasing in some restaurants), but it had lost some of its texture. - The avocados didn't have any hint of browning, which was good. - The rice was not tender and definitely out for a lot of the day, even in the fridge. Service - Unfortunately, I probably caught them on a bad day. Even though there was almost no line (one person was in front of me, and one behind me), the server was very curt and impatient. (In comparison, other places around, like Shake Shack had about 20-30 people lined up). Ambiance: - It was literally just a grab & go place with a few other options. Grab-and-go sushi and rice bowl spot near Gate B26. This terminal seems to have a lot of unhealthy food places like Dunkin' Donuts, Shake Shack, and Buffalo Wild Wings. I didn't really like any of the eateries here, but this one felt like the least worst option. Bento Sushi is a large sushi chain. They mostly open locations in airports, universities, and grocery stores. Prices are on the higher side which was expected, but it wasn't outrageous. Besides bowls and rolls, you can also purchase a few side dishes like inari and seaweed salad. Everything is already packaged and displayed in the open air refrigerator, so you simply choose whatever you want and then pay at the register. To their credit, they do make a conscious effort to prepare, hand roll, and slice their sushi on-site. It is pre-made, but it's made in their kitchen during the morning hours, not shipped in already made from an off-site facility. I tried the Atlantic Salmon Samurai Combo, which was Salmon Nigiri and Salmon Avocado rolls. Sodium and sugar levels were much lower compared to the Salmon Avocado roll I get at Whole Foods. The fish had a nice orange color and there was no browning on the avocado, which was a relief. Only the rice tasted like it was made a couple hours ago, like it lost its moisture. Overall it was pretty on par with the sushi you'd get at a Japanese supermarket, but at restaurant-level prices. I've had airport sushi here at there. It can be good, it can be bad, it's rarely ever great. It's not their fault - they are limited on the knives because it's an airport. This review takes that into account. Big bunker of stacked boxes of different varieties of sushi are available. Because this place is good, the sushi really seems fresh because it's turned over often and they're making it all day. If you stand over to the side, you can actually see the chefs rolling rolls and preparing boxes. California rolls, tuna and/or salmon nigiri, some maki rolls, some things covered in tempura flakes and sauces, something for all tastes. There are also gyoza dumplings. I opted for a box of tuna, both nigiri and maki. It was reasonably fresh. Not as fresh as if I'd been sitting at a sushi bar, more like it was about an hour or so. And that's perfectly okay. Grabbed dinner from Bento Sushi before catching a flight. Would not stand on its own, but a perfectly reasonable option when traveling out of JFK. Quality: As good as you can hope for with airport sushi. It was clear that they were constantly refreshing the options and knew not to leave packages out for an extended period of time. I felt like my Salmon Roll Combo, which was a few different styles of salmon-focused items was decently fresh. The rice was not the best, but that is inevitable when sitting in a fridge. Terminal 4 seems to basically be junk food: pizza, burgers, chicken wings, and donuts. Wanting something a little lighter, I was excited to find Bento Sushi by Gate B25 (a pretty long haul from B53 which is where I was coming from... but worth it especially if you're vegan, have a bit of a layover, and want something healthier). The line here moves super quickly since most of the rolls are in a grab-and-go case. Physically, I feel good about my purchase: an avocado-cucumber veggie roll, seaweed salad, edamame, and a seltzer water. Monetarily? Not so much: my bill was over $35. Yikes. The veggie roll was solid, though: rolled tightly, plentiful in filling, seemed fresh (i.e. the avocado wasn't browning), and hit the spot. the seaweed salad was decent though a bit slimy; and while edamame is edamame, I just wish there had been a bit more for what I paid (it comes in a deceivingly large box). I'm not usually in this part of JFK, but I'm glad to know this spot is here if I'm ever passing through again. Airport sushi can be hit or miss: the hit here is the sushi (and the plant-based options, a rarity in airports I find), the miss is the price (but I'd rather pay more and feel good then pay less and feel gross). read more

Super hungry & the bento teriyaki bowl sounded good. It was a happy surprise! The chicken piece was delicious and was huge and slightly over grilled (which is PERFECT for airport food!) I'm a semi big dude. I work out. It was about 4pm and was my first meal of the day. Sure, carb heavy, but the sticky rice was perfect. It could use more of the cabbage instead of more rice. This location just opened up. It offers freshly made sushi, ready for passengers to enjoy either before departure or during flight. I spotted everything here from your traditional California Roll to a full salmon offering with its Salmon Roll Combo. All products come with wasabi, ginger, soy sauce and chopsticks and are in an easy to transport package. It's the best to-go sushi I've ever had. Thanks Bento Sushi for a healthy airport food option. This brand varies a lot from store to store. The Bento Sushi at The Shoprite in Flanders has stale dried rice in their Sushi. Other stores are better and still other Sushi's elsewhere tend to have more experienced people making their product. Find a good place and stick with that chef. read more

Due to lack of time to explore JFK's food options at Delta's Terminal 4, I decided I would get sushi because it's quick and I could easily eat it on the go. Worst decision ever. I took one of the salmon sushi platters from the cooler and it was probably the worst sushi I've ever had. It was stale, the salmon was rubbery, and the rice was so dense and way too sour for my taste. I've had deli sushi better than this. I am one to finish my food and I barely ate half of this unappetizing "food". It was dinner rush hour too - you'd think turnover is high and the food would be fresh. Perhaps people have had better experiences when ordering sushi that was made-to-order... like their special rolls. My advice is to take your business elsewhere.... and definitely do not get the refrigerated sushi. read more

JFK Airport has many varieties of food when you're hungry and waiting for a flight. When you really want sushi and you're at the airport, Bento has you covered. The fish is pretty fresh with an average cut, the rice taste like regular refrigerated sushi rice almost hard and cold. read more

Purchased 1-edamame and 1-miso soup which is freeze dried in a cup. The edamame was chilled, I'm used to heated. The miso soup was microwaved and the cup was falling apart as I walked to my gate.
