Mulloway, charred spring onions and sorrel

Mr Savage, you had my heart all aflutter with your restaurant/bar finding itself listed on all manner of "best chips in Sydney" lists. I'd heard claims of them being chunky like Matt Preston's fingers and crisp like early mornings in July. With all this on my mind Bentley was on the top of my mind when a friend proposed a last minute Friday dinner in the city. Yes, purely for their chips. Don't judge me, you know you'd do the same. Bentley is a great place to go if you want a table in the city on a busy Friday night without a reservation. Plenty of tables free both in the restaurant and the bar, but not so quiet that you can't do a bit of people watching if dining alone or waiting for a friend. The service is a delight - super friendly and professional without being stuffy. Our waiter had great knowledge of the menu - definitely needed when dishes are only described by their ingredients. Our fish and beef were cooked perfectly and presented beautifully but other than that, only memorable for the steep price. The green beans with hazelnuts however I could have eaten all day - just cooked to al dente and super morish with a nutty, umami sauce of some sort. Oh and the chips? Well I'm sure you could tell by my rating but sadly they we quite disappointing. Yes they were thicker than your average chip but don't have enough crunch and lacked that glorious starchy texture on the inside. If anything they were just like...corner store wedges? Le sigh Time Out says they'd go back, even if just for a bowl of chips and glass of wine. Mmmm yeah maybe if you have money to burn and we swap the chips for some green beans. Then we can talk.

Pork Cheek with radicchio

Really wanted to give these guys a four, or even a five, but to be honest it was a bit of a struggle. It was all very nice, but, I dunno, didn't wow me. The location is good, and the fit out moody, woody, dark. Bit confusing when you walk in as no obvious reception but someone will come up and ask who you are etc and show you to the seat. I was early so had time to review both menu and wine list in detail. Wine list - extensive to the point of almost pretentious, but nevertheless a very good range of mainly European wines with good explanation and pictures of the regions they are from. Pretty pricey, but pretty much what you would expect from a two hat joint. The menu is nice, and sounds good - lots of obscure flavours and references, and all in all for my current sensibilities a bit over-wrought - but that is just me, to be honest, with diners fatigue. However, having recently eaten at Monopole, another one of chef Brent Savage's establishments, I was expecting good things. We started with fresh oysters - lovely and cold, fresh and crisp. I had Pork Cheek + Garlic and Yoghurt Puree + Radicchio + Jamon - it was interesting. The pork was very tender and soft, with a crust I couldn't identify, but only just warm. However, wonderful taste combination. Crispy fried radicchio - shades of a kale chip!! For my main, Rangers Valley Skirt Steak + Fennel + Mustard + Olive. Hmm. Skirt steak was very tender, but again, barely warm. The fennel and mustard was delightful, but the olive a bit overpowering to my taste buds, which by now are well lubricated with a nice french burgundy. The side of Sugar Snaps + Zucchini + Asparagus + Pinenut was interesting, with thin shaves of zucchini, a pinenut puree and crumb, and sugarsnaps and asparagus, served cold, like a salad, again not what we were expecting but flavoursome. Dessert - why not be rude not to. So I selected the Violet Ice-Cream + Cocoa Honeycomb + Blueberry, an interesting combination beautifully arranged elements. The service was attentive without being obtrusive, and the wine waiter helpful when our first choice was unavailable. I will likely go again, and perhaps a review upwards may be forthcoming, but for my money I would rather go to Monopole - like I said, could be just me being a bit over fussy food, decide for yourself, it is certainly worth a visit.

Olive with blueberry and yogurt sorbet - it tastes as disgusting as it looks and sounds

The worst meal Ive ever eaten! It's the morning after what was the worst meal Iv ever eaten! There isn't a discrete way that I can could write this because to be frank it just doesn't deserve it. We had the degustation menu and between 3 of us the meal came to almost costing $1000! And what a total rip-off it was! For - olive, blueberry and yogurt sorbet! - Chicken liver Pate with raspberry! And Wagu beef that tasted like it was marinated in mould! My stomach is still churning! The aftertaste is still in my mouth! I've never eaten food so revolting before! I think you'd have to be a either a complete wanker, tosser or invalid to taste this crap and think that it was nice. Simply pairing odd combinations of flavours doesn't cut it! Save yourself the disappointment and the stomach ache after! Erhhhhhh so disgusting!

Deliriously edible - and we were only there for a drink. Will write more once I've been back.

This was a completely random dinner. Just had drinks in city on Thursday catching up with friends and was round 8. I'd wanted to try the place as I'm on an endless search to find a degustation place in Sydney which is even half as good as French Cafe back in Auckland. Anyway, feeling hungry, we decided to bite the bullet and try it out. It was quite full but managed to get a place. We decided to go for the 8 course with matching wine ($150 + $90pp). First dish, amuse bouche. This was foie gras in two different flavours. Red was definitely my favourite of the two, this had chilli and the other one contained hazelnut. The chilli foie gras had more of a kick to it and could have done with 4 of these instead of the hazelnut. Anyway, it was alright for a starter, nothing sensational. I started this thinking I'd go through each dish but actually I won't as the only one that was really good was the violet ice cream. This is probably their best dish. The food is well presented, the service is nice. Although a lot of the time I could barely hear the waiter and just politely nodded at what he was saying as I couldn't be bothered to have him repeat what he had memorised. In any case, when you're out for a fine dining experience and shelling out enough to do some serious shopping, you expect more. I'm glad I tried it, so now I know - there's nothing memorable about it and wouldn't go back again. Better to spend your $500 elsewhere. My search continues for a 5 star degustation.

Being close to where I used to work, I'd frequent this place quite a bit, and before it was a PJs it was a mates fave city pub so we'd catch up over a few here from time to time. There's a pretty good mix of people in the street-level bar, and PJs have converted it into more of a sports bar so there are plenty of screens for the sports nuts to check out their favourite teams prospects. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. The snug, the downstairs den, has a great looking bar, and "snug" seating, but it's kinda pointless down there. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something. But why would they do that when they can get by with what they have.

Being in the city, it can get quite busy very quickly and is a decently sized basement multi-storied pub. TV screens are usually are usually playing Fox sports or something similar. I order the Parmy, just to be on the the safe side. I wasn't too game to try the Pie which is supposed to be one of the best (as judged by Irish people I work with) around. The food is carefully prepared and you can tell the produce is quality and they've cooked it properly which some pubs sometimes struggle to do consistently... The chips were the standout side, crisp and crunchy! Definitely will be trying the stew or pie, that is if I'm brave enough to.
