I have been involved in fitness for decades, including working as a personal trainer, and this was one of the most frustrating gym experiences I've had.
A coworker who is staying with us recommended Bent Barbell Gym after purchasing a week pass for $30. Based on his experience, three of us decided to give it a try.
When we arrived, there were no staff members present, no members working out, and no clear instructions on how to enter the facility. There was only a QR code and two phone numbers posted on the door with a note saying to call if we had questions.
We each purchased a $15 day pass through the QR code, but there were no instructions explaining how to access the gym after payment. The entrance is controlled by a keypad lock, and nothing on the door explained that you must download an app, connect through Bluetooth, and use your phone to gain entry.
When I called for help, I was told it was "common sense" and that I should just follow the instructions. The problem was that there were no instructions explaining the process. Eventually, we had to call our coworker to figure out how to get inside.
The next issue was pricing consistency. Our coworker had purchased a $30 week pass, but when I asked about getting the same option, I was told by both people listed on the contact numbers that week passes are not available. One person described them as "situational" and "rare." Instead, we were told to continue purchasing $15 day passes, which would cost significantly more despite us staying in town for another week.
What disappointed me most was the customer service. Rather than helping solve a reasonable problem, I was met with a rude and dismissive attitude. At one point I was told they didn't even want me working out there. One of the owners even suggested I go work out at Anytime Fitness instead.
The facility itself may be fine, but access, communication, pricing consistency, and customer service were all disappointing. If you're new to the area or visiting from out of town, be prepared for a confusing entry process and inconsistent answers regarding membership options. read more
