    Cave Lake

My first trip to Cave Lake was so enjoyable. It was such a great experience! I was not disappointed. It is beautiful out there and my family really enjoyed it. We had a small picnic and it was super easy to get a table. There was a few tables near the trees with an amazing view of the lake. We had brought a couple of boats with us to hang out in the lake and let me just say it was an unforgettable experience. It was super muddy near the shore line and we all sunk in! Haha it was super freaky - seemed like quick mud! But overall it was so much fun. There was a few people fishing and others hanging around the lake. Not too crowded when we went. Definitely recommend this amazing spot.

This is a beautiful lake. There was a $5 park fee. There were some areas like the cave that were not open due to the pandemic. People were kayaking but the shoreline was very muddy so be sure to bring appropriate footwear. No parking issues and there were nice handicapped spots available.

The view from the top of one of the hikes called Overlook Trail. Hike is 3.5 miles and a 1000 foot gain in hight.

So how can I give nature less then 5 stars? I can't, the state park is picked from the pristine nature of the surrounding area. Going form a flat valley seeing the extremes of nature and the surrounding mountains. You feel like you are in a movie or comic book because the extremes are so, well, extreme. The time we were here there was no snow, the next day we woke to see snow on the mountains. We drove to a local spot nearby and it rained and as we looked behind the rain turned the mountain into snow. Beautiful and breathtaking views from anywhere you are. You are in the valley closer to Salt Lake City than to Reno or Las Vegas. It is located where the southern end of the magnificent Steptoe Valley meets foothills of the Egan Range near the Great Basin National Park. There are two camp grounds located within the valley and state park and many hiking trails. A close 7 miles to the main road and a close 7 miles more to supplies and hotels. A lake to fish in and roads to explore. As I said how can you give nature less the 5 stars it's beautiful take a drive and go see.

BEST LAKE EVER!!!!! Very small lake, makes finding your own spot easy. There are not many people there on the weekdays. Fun place to take our dog and have a beer. The water looks like Hawaiian water and the camp and facilities themselves are great!!! The entrance fee was $7 and you pay based on the honor system.

Camped over Labor Day at the Lake View Campground located within the Cave Lake State Park near Ely, Nevada. When we arrived there was only one spot open, campsite #26. It was windy and this spot was exposed to the wind, but there were enough trees to shelter our tent. This campsite was in a nice location - on the outer edge of the campground with great views in all directions. On the second and third day, the wind died down and we really enjoyed our site. There was a short walk up to the site from our parking pad. Each campsite has a picnic table, a fire pit, and grill that extends over the fire pit. Note: there is NO FIREWOOD for purchase at the campground, we drove into Ely and bought a few bundles from the Shell station (at the intersection of Highway 6 and 50), you can also get firewood at Ridley's (local grocery store in Ely). Bathrooms have running water and there are free showers (i.e., no coin operated showers at this campsite!). Also, there are water spigots located throughout the campground. Hiking was A+, fishing was not as successful. Lake is small but peaceful and beautiful. We had a nice visit and good break from the Vegas summer heat. We will return!

Great Basin National Park is a relatively small portion of the Great Basin as a whole. There is no…read moreNational Park entrance fee required to visit. Per Google: "The Great Basin is a large, arid region in the western United States, defined by its geography and centered on Nevada. It is situated between the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges to the west and the Rocky Mountains to the east. The region includes most of Nevada, about half of Utah, and parts of Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, and California." While planning our visit, I looked on the nps.gov website, I saw that there are cave tours. I signed up for the Lehman Cave Parachute Shield Tour. The tickets are purchased from recreation.gov website. We started off with a visit to the Great Basin Visitor Center where we looked at exhibits and got a general feel for the area. We bought a few small souvenirs and were on our way! I must say that the park was super beautiful with the changing of the leaves! Parts of the mountains were lit up with red & gold foliage! We drove the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive all the way to the Wheeler Peak Overlook. Go slow-ish and enjoy the views! We stopped by: Osceola Ditch Trail - was a man-made waterway used for mining Wheeler Peak Summit Trail Summit Trailhead Bristlecone-Alpine Lakes Trailhead Mather Overlook Wheeler Peak Overlook - end of the scenic drive and has an awesome view of [yes!] Wheeler Peak Wheeler Peak Overlook is the final destination of the scenic drive. There are stops along the drive. Since we weren't hiking, we stopped at most of the pull-outs and parking lots. Wheeler Peak stands at 13,063 feet and is the second tallest point in Nevada! There are viewing scopes you can use to get a closer look! We made a quick stop at Mather Overlook. You can see Wheeler Peak from here as well. This overlook is named for Stephen Mather, the first director of the National Park Service (NPS). There's a cool bronze relief map of the Wheeler cirque. Then we drove back down to the Lehman Caves Visitor Center for our tour. The tour was very informative and was roughly an hour long. We stayed in Ely, NV which suited our needs. Baker, NV seemed pretty desolate from what I saw driving on the NV-487. Great Basin National Park is fairly remote compared to other National Parks, but definitely worth coming out to visit at least once!

With the unexpected closure of the last 10 miles of Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, we had no choice but to do a different hike in the area. Baker Creek Loop was a scenic forest trail with a meadow halfway through. Starting the trail clockwise; trail was an incline up the mountain and a decline back down to the aspen forest. Fall colored aspens were prominent at the start and end of the trail! Wooden bridges were slippery with ice. Decent sized parking area at the trailhead. Restroom available at the parking lot. Required to drive on gravel road for ~3 miles. Short video of the hike for those interested! https://youtu.be/gmfUHF9BAc0
