I was pleased to learn about Marty and HV Handyman from a Yelp review, and even more pleased that the review was written by someone from Yelp I actually know in person. Marty is professional yet casual, a nice combination. He was always quick to get back to me when I contacted him in advance of the work, always in less than 24 hours. When I initially sent him a description of the work and a photo, he got back right away with his estimates of time and materials, and cost. Along the way, he was proactive when it came to things unexpected or little adds. For example, he discovered rodent damage on some of my electrical wires, and he immediately offered to take care of that. Within an hour, he had gone and returned to the local Home Depot with the extra materials to address the issue, and the add-in to the overall cost was again reasonable. He did 99% of the cleanup as well, leaving me with about 5 minutes of work to wipe off some dust after he completed the spackling, sanding, and painting. Marty also doesn't over-book, and he is again up front with what he can and cannot do. I've already discussed another project or two I'd like him to tackle once warmer weather has returned. I only hope he hasn't been swamped with additional work requests based on positive word-of-mouth and word-of-Yelp.

And I'll be honest, the handyman we usually work with was booked up for months. It actually seemed like all the handymen were. (There's a pandemic out there, and apparently everyone's taking the time to fix up their home.) Marty let me know that he was busy too, and that he was taking some time to spend with his family (and you can't begrudge someone being a good family man). But he was willing to do the work when he was free, which is all we could ask. I also appreciate how he operates. He'd prefer to get photos/video of what the problems were so he can give you an accurate estimate before even setting foot in the place (saves everyone time), and so he can show up with all the materials necessary (saves everyone time and money). His website is also pretty comprehensive; it lists all the things he does, who he is, how he works, and shows work he's done. That's how I found him, and I'm glad I did. I also like that he's willing to admit what he can't do (in our case, it was more involved electrical work). Some folks claim they can do anything, and will do a less than ideal job; Marty will just recommend someone who he's worked with and can vouch for. In any case, we had a few odd jobs that needed doing, and once Marty let me know when he was available, he was on time, and efficient. He did quality work. I thought the pricing was fair for his time and labor, and I would hire him again. That's really all you can ask from a handyman.

We hired Arnold to replace our interior doors, door and window trim and baseboard. We asked him if…read morehe would be able to be complete for the painters who were scheduled to begin 3 weeks later and he agreed. We are now 8 weeks past that deadline and still not complete. He is also no longer answering calls or text messages. He damaged some of the freshly painted walls adjacent to the trim he installed and the paint was not applied appropriately to cover his patch. The trim in 3 door openings is not level or plumb and the doors are sticking- brand new doors are sticking!!! One door cannot be installed as the door frame he installed is 1-1/2" out of level. We asked for 1x4 finger jointed pre-primed pine trim for all door and window trim and 1x6 finger jointed pre-primed pine trim for he baseboard. To save money he used common pine boards with major knots and holes in them. We needed him to finish the install so that we wouldn't lose our spot in the painters schedule, so we agreed that he could install it if he caulked all the holes and painted it so the knots didn't show through. He didn't do that. He used different trim that doesn't match what we asked for on the first floor of our home because he said it would allow him to go faster and it was similar width to what we wanted. We agreed, again, to get him to finish before the painters. He didn't finish before the painters and now our walls were damaged when he was installing, caulking and painting the trim. DO NOT USE THIS GUY.

He said he didn't show because it was raining but that only accounted for a few of the times, not the entire list shown below. Then he said he didn't work on holidays after he told me he would come on Columbus day & that the holiday was not a problem; that morning he said he forgot he had to watch his kids and he would be here in the afternoon - of course, he never showed up. This is a property services company that doesn't keep its word, doesn't care about finishing the job they started and has absolutely horrible customer service. No empathy for the disabled. I just wanted the job done so I said I didn't want to have to contact BBB/ leave a yelp review - I gave him notice so it could be resolved amicably - instead he said if I threatened him, he would not come back. In no way is alerting him a threat! It was an olive branch. Him and his secretary kept saying they would schedule time to come out and never did. Despicable people. He also said he would drop off the invoice copy to my home and never did. I have a photo but he did not do all the work originally listed so the $780 isn't correct but also NOT not a discount. Now I need to pay someone else to fix it. During recovery from 3 major neuro surgeries, this stress/deception is the last thing I need. Stay far away from them.
