This may be the best weight and cardio room in DC's Parks and Recreation system. You should…read moredefinitely come check this place out. Pros: The equipment is new, lots of hand weights, kettle bells, several TRXs, weighted/battle ropes, that large tire you can flip from side to the other, cardio machines, medicine balls, weighted balls, benches, and lots of space. Super friendly front desk staff. Awesome programs for seniors and kids. Ample street parking and a parking lot. Huge outdoor pool, boxing room, basketball courts, etc. It's right next to the Kenilworth track and Aquatic Gardens, so it's easy to combine outdoor cardio with a strength training session inside the gym. This gym is really awesome. Two cons, strictly in my opinion: 1) The volume of the music system is often mind-numbingly loud. The audio system is set up so that people can plug an aux cable to their own phone (technically a really cool thing), meaning they can raise the volume even higher. It also means that you often hear lyrics that -- IMO -- should not be in a public facility that is supposedly for people of all ages and tastes. If it weren't so loud, it would be harder to make out the lyrics. This is where the Sherwood Recreation Center is better -- they have no audio system (that I noticed, anyway) and there's a sign posted in the gym saying that headphones are required. So while the Sherwood Rec Center is tiny and dated, I can work out in peace with the option of bringing my own tunes. 2) It's too warm and not well-enough ventilated for a place where you're supposed to be working out. The staff explained they have no control over the heat/AC system. But the gym is so good that it would be okay to deal with the warmth/stuffiness were it not for the volume.

The Kenilworth Recreation Center is an inspiration for the very fact that on any given day, it's…read morefull of people working out. It's near the famous Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens and comes with plenty of grassy areas, picnic tables, covered spots, tennis courts, and a track for exercising. Parking is plentiful and everyone is so nice!

The library off to the side of the recreation center seemed a little small. The disappointing aspects were the weight room and the bathroom. The weight room was tiny and completely transparent - nice view, but I wouldn't want to be on display like that. The bathroom wasn't clean, and the sensors on both the toilets and sinks did not function well. I know people who use the indoor pool here often but I didn't get a chance to check it out. I attended a Step Afrika program in the gymnasium. The gym itself seemed clean and well-appointed with a couple of bleacher seating units. The Step Afrika performance was great, with lots of local love (go-go music, kids and even elderly mobility impaired individuals, dancing with the performers). I was required to sign in at the front desk and a security guard walked around the building. However, they were all pretty laid back. When I asked a front desk person about the performance, she had to ask someone else, even though there was a line of people, signs, a table, etc in front of the gymnasium, that was all visible to her. Parking was fine, I was able to park in the small main entrance lot, but there is plenty of street parking.

This place is amazing, but your experience there will likely depend if the lifeguard on duty…read more Online it says the slide is open from 1-4 so we came at 2 and the lifeguard on duty shut it down because they're understaffed. The next lifeguard opened it up for a bit when we asked for it but also said they are understaffed and technically need more lifeguards on duty to have it open. The water is chilly at first but it's warm inside so you adjust (nothing like Rumsey lol). There was an underwater spin class happening too - so cool! There's also free life jackets, kick boards, and noodles! There's a gradual entrance - perfect for toddlers (the splash features were off though). I love the huge windows letting the sunlight in. We will definitely be back! Would be 5 stars if they get it fully staffed so everyone can enjoy the slide!
