I will say I have had no issues with the staff and they've all been very kind even doctor Denny as well no issues as far as hospitality. In fact, I loved everyone there. As far as the appointments, though, something was off and a little fishy. He had said one tooth had too many fillings and it needed a veneer so I did that and it was a huge amount of money. I think it was around $800. After that I had problems with the tooth and he said it could've been a hairline fracture or it could need a cap and he was ready to schedule an appointment for that. Not only that is he pointed out that I had about three teeth with cavities in it. I also asked him to shave down my teeth and some areas from some bad fillings. I had gotten previously from a different dentist and he never did that for me. I decided to go to Kendall Rhodes associates. They didn't find any of the cavities. There was nothing wrong with the tooth that he wanted to fix a hairline fracture for. Not only that is on a very first appointment the dentist smooth out my fillings without me having to ask, she knows it and said how terrible and just went into it. I'm blown away. I want to believe that this is a good dentist and that money isn't a contributing factor to the decisions he made on my teeth. But I'm having a really hard time justifying all the money that I've spent. I'm very thankful I went to another dentist where I feel like they aren't just trying to milk my money.

Furthermore, the office is very understanding on the financial side as well. Apart from reasonable pricing, I was able to set up a monthly plan to pay off my bill over time which I am not used to seeing elsewhere. It actually smells nice (sign of attention to detail and care) and there are fun murals on the ceiling, another detail of care to me. I had no swelling and only minor discomfort for maybe 24 hours, a sign of his craftsmanship. The rest of his staff I found very pleasant as well and were extremely professional, kind and paid attention to the details. I would take a lot of these negative reviews with a grain of salt (or sugar because they're already pretty salty :) ). I know everyone has their own experience but I have to imagine there is a lot more context than is shared and I'm sure that Dr. Loul and his team would handle difficult situations with the upmost care which is not often easy to find (especially in health care).

(Please note that other comments below are about OTHER dentists and not about Dr. Cowan!) Why do I say 'best'? Dr. Cowan has a very deft touch. He is careful but sure. He is confident, but meticulous. One example: When using a drill, he will lightly touch the place on your tooth he is going to address, before spinning up the tool. Sort of like a practice swing in golf. Then, he applies the tool with a confidence you can feel. He is always very tuned in to any discomfort you may experience. One of the things I like best, is that he tells you what he's going to do next so that nothing comes as a surprise. It's impossible to ask, "How much longer?" Or, "What is the next step?" He knows this and answers the question before you have to ask. He is also aware that insurance plans are all over the map so he has always explained what sort of work I need done - and might need, and then advises that I work with the staff in the front office to figure out a game plan. And the staff are really nice, from the front office to the hygienist to the dental assistants. All of them capable and experienced and have all been working as a team in a way that makes every visit run smooth and any procedure devoid of anxiety. After a decade of regular work (root canal, cavities, crowns, and even an implant), I am a strong advocate.... So much so that when my (soon to be 90!) father moved to Santa Barbara, I did not hesitate to make this recommendation. Thanks for the crummy teeth, Dad!

But more…read moreimportantly, two very detailed dental hygienists noted a small mass in the back of my son's mouth during a routine cleaning. The dentist evaluated it and referred us to an oral surgeon (Jesse Lanzon, also wonderful) and he biopsied it. It showed an incredibly rare tumor (particularly in the jaw of a 10 year old) and my son underwent a big surgery at CHLA to remove it. Unfortunately, the part the hygienists saw was only the tip of the iceberg and the tumor had grown through his mandible (jaw bone) in the other direction. I owe those hygienists my life. Though the tumor was fortunately benign (non-cancerous), it grew very quickly. I can only imagine how much bigger of a surgery he would have undergone had the hygienists not picked it up. (I can't say I regularly look in my kid's mouth and he wasn't complaining of anything ... just makes me shudder thinking about how much worse this could have been).
