We just went to their Grand Opening. Beautiful store. Had so many amazing items from clothing, to bar sets, to Christmas decorations, children's toys to jewelry. Very unique gift items too. Prices were very reasonable too! Their staff was very helpful and personable. They even helped us carry all our bags to our car. Great place to buy gifts, birthday to holidays. Always live support locals who live in the area. We need more family owned businesses. It is so much more personable. Will definitely be returning to do more holiday shopping. read more

I have to buy this tracksuit. My friend got one and the second I touched it, my brain said "yep, we're done here." It's the softest, fluffiest, most ridiculous level of cozy, and now I'm fully convinced it's a need, not a want. I discovered Bench Home through a blogger I follow on Instagram. I went by the storefront after work during a weekday. I was able to find street parking less than a half a block away. Upon entering, I was warmly greeted by Diane. Within ten seconds, I was already picking something up to look at it closer. There are two rooms filled with home decor. Make sure to check every shelf, under the tables, against the walls and on the floor. BH carries so much beautiful stuff for your home including decorative vases, dinnerware, table scape items, pictures, pillows, throw blankets, bar accessories, candles and much more. I found a vase with two types of material for my mom as a Mother's Day gift. It has smooth pottery in a terracotta color as well as a hard rough like stone in a light grey. Diane offered to wrap my mom's gift and it looks wonderful. They will wrap your item in a kraft paper bag with bold bright flowered tissue. For myself, I got a trio of small brown vases. I also found an awesome hand sewn round bar accessory to hang on the drawer handle of my liquor cabinet. Many of the items I was interested in purchasing didn't have prices on them. Diane was very helpful and close by to look up the prices. They have gift cards so I know what I am asking for as a birthday present. Bench is the quintessential Kensington business: not only are its home decor and gift items irresistible, but the staff is also incredibly friendly to locals (and everyone else, particularly of the four-footed variety). But here's something not everyone knows: Bench also rents out the Cottage behind the business for events. Again, the staff is incredibly accommodating and made my recent craft event so lovely. BENCH Home just opened last week in Kensington. There isn't a home furnishings/decor shop like it in the neighborhood so that's a big win in my book. The store is finely curated and merchandised. The items are carefully curated and most of what you find is not something you will ever see in another store in San Diego - I would highly recommend a visit. On a personal note the jewelry section is exquisite and the owner has a great eye for unique pieces, for Christmas this year I purchased many items as gifts for my friends and family. I recently stumbled upon Kensington because of the BENCH Instagram account. This cute little neighborhood is full of fun shops. Most impressive is BENCH. I have shopped there several times now and have several fun decorations that make me happy. From a young Stevie Nicks portrait to cute decorative votives for my Easter display, there is something for everyone. The shop itself is warm, cozy and smells fantastic. Helen Bonar, the owner, is just as knowledgeable and friendly. She goes out of her way to help you. I saw something on their Instagram account, and they immediately put it on hold for me. This small neighborhood shop is providing a small town welcoming feel. So glad they arrived! read more

I felt compelled to write this review after seeing another review that was so disparaging. Every item in the store is so beautiful, and each time I've wandered in, I've felt compelled to buy something special that I didn't know I needed! Love, love, love their blankets and dinnerware, too! It feels like you are in the hands of an interior designer who is willing to help you choose the cutest pieces to compliment your style because they take the time to actually ask you what your taste is and to avoid certain styles that you don't lean towards. As far as the prices...you pay for what you get. It may seem pricey, but it's a specialty store with high-quality furnishings, etc... Whomever decided to open this cliche fun box of a storage unit should be taken out back and shown some things. Complete crap. It's like Pier One decides to open up a satellite shop in Kensington with a snobby elitist staff and tasteless products. I went in and was less than amazed. Also, the fake nice overzealous staff didn't tickle my purchasing fancy but left me insulted and irritated. I suppose this place is an oasis for aspiring upper middle class housewives (which is their target clientele). What a waste of a good store front. read more

Owner has incredible taste and staff was attentive without being over bearing. The biggest problem is my wife also loved the shop so I see random pieces appear in our house. I had a great experience working with Helen and Nicole at Bench. I walked in their store to buy a birthday gift and was surprised by how much I liked the things in the store! It is one of the best home decor/gift shops in San Diego, in my opinion. I liked their style! I wanted to refresh my home of 20 years. I learned they had an in home decorating service. They came out to my house and toured it. That day, they made a few changes with my own things. Several weeks later, they brought all kinds of accessories to my house, placed them and let me access. Some were from their shop, others were from their shopping excursions elsewhere. I never would have thought of the options they offered to me. They were very flexible in letting me live with items I was unsure of for a few days. In the end, I didn't buy everything they suggested, but I made some very significant purchases. We are especially enjoying the eclectic feel of our family room. I look forward to having them consult with me and choose more design elements for my house. read more
