You couldn't taste the pepper or the calamari but you could taste the salt!. It was bathed in it. It was truly disgusting. Usually a group of us go there for dinner every couple of months and the food is without fault. We were going there in September for dinner again but after our experience with the Salty Calamari we are now going somewhere else. Taste Your Food Before You Send it OUT!

I guess you could consider this to be your typical working man's pub. I guess they can be nice at times, but the problem tends to be the lack of beers available. It sort of puts me off somewhat when I have to drink the cheap swill. I guess I'll pass on this next time.

Our accommodation is part of a fantastic prize I was privileged to win at the Melbourne Good Food…read moreand Wine Show so it's all a bonus really! That said, although the facade looks a bit tired, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the location is within a kilometre or so to the city's main attractions. My past experience with the Mercure brand has proved the greatest asset is their staff and Geelong does not disappoint. Dinner at the Brasserie was adapted to my crazy dietary needs (without tasting bland) and the range of wine was great. Staff were also friendly and openly accommodating. Parking is outdoors (which makes for a soggy walk if raining) and there are limited leisure facilities but it all depends what you're after. As far as I'm concerned, my stay has been great!

If I'm not paying full price for a room (reward points, last minute/wotif/hotels combined), I expect to be placed in a room that is less than the hotels best. The experience I had at the Mercure Geelong certainly reinforced that view. I won't be returning, and should you have the misfortune to be allocated room 107, I suggest you request being moved. Another tip, parking in the hotel is $18 a day, but it is free overnight on the street out the front, with three hour limits during business hours. The bed is a chiropractor's best friend, and sounds like it is four days older than god. I have not heard springs groan so much in a hotel ever. I didn't notice any roll together, but the mattress felt like the section under my waist had been removed. Even after a number of beers, it was uncomfortable. The next morning we were awoken by the sound of wailing children next door. The walls were seemingly not designed to contain noises. I could even hear the TV through the wall. Poor. My highlight was the bathroom goodies. Room temperature was nice. When we checked out, a man named Phil was rather helpful, so that at least we left on a pleasant note.

If you find yourself in Geelong and in need of a fuss-free and self-contained room for the night,…read moreNireeda Apartments should be top of mind. Located a short stroll from the CBD and the promenade, the apartments are exceptional value for money. Our studio was clean, compact and should we have been staying longer also had a kitchenette with an oven and stovetop for at-home dining. The bed was comfortable and all-in-all a fine spot for an over night slumber.

I now frequently find myself dropping in for a casual meal when in the city by the bay. The side of Caser is really quite good. Plenty of salty anchovies and crunchy croutons to make each bite perfect. The burrito consists of slow cooked pulled beef, no mince meat chilli con carne here. The steak, always cooked to perfection. There are quite a few good local reds and whites on the wine menu too. If in doubt, the Pepper Jack Shiraz is a trusty staple too.

I had to keep the blinds drawn from the sight of waterfront strollers.I unfortunately experienced a room so hot I had to leave the balcony doors open to sleep ... very insecure but the air con didn't work. Even on a wintry night I boiled. The taps dripped, the gym machine malfunctioned, nearly cracking my back. The pool is for bobbing only so "fitness centre" is more than an exaggeration. The gym is v small with a couple of cv machines. The "queen" bed was 2 twins pushed together so as always I slept on one side to avoid the discomfort of the middle join. No way the room would be comfortable for 2 people in a twin anyway... it was a lot smaller than the photos suggested. I dont know why hotels don't actually provide what the website says... do they think we wont notice the room isn't spacious? On the upside, the tv experience is excellent with big screen & good fox stations. The pasta room service was good as were the poached eggs at breakfast ... the bacon left in the bain marie was leather tough like most of the rest of the brekkie. On the other hand, the shower was hot & the towels were good in the room. Drop the price & it would get 3 stars... as it is this hotel is below par.

Reasonably priced valet car parking, very comfortable king size bed and friendly staff made our stay very easy. We had a bathroom with the shower over the bath, but I assume they are upgrading, as we have not had previously. If this is an issue it might be wise to mention it when you book.
