Why? 1) He was on time - I never had to wait more than 10 minutes to see him 2) He was able to see me on short notice - luckily, I lived ~15 minutes away but there were times where I had to see him the same day and he was able to make it work 3) He didn't make me come in for an appointment to get a prescription if it wasn't necessary - sometimes, he would be able to write me a prescription for a medication I'd used before (e.g. cream for my eczema) without an appointment first. 4) He remembered me, got to know me and had great bedside manner - he helped me work through a number of health issues over the years and was patient, professional and thoughtful. I kinda felt like he was like my dad. He studied my charts and remembered things about my allergies, etc. 5) He takes most insurance - I switched insurance a couple times as I switched jobs a couple times. Dr. Gendelman is the best primary care physician I have ever had, by far. Over the past 5 years He's managed to get me to come in at least once a year, and always sees me promptly if I call with a problem--Shingles, Whooping Cough, a fungal infection and back sprain to date. When you call the phone is answered by a real person, Juana, who is a true gem, and very helpful. Dr. Gendelman is competent and confident. He voluntarily explains his diagnosis and treatment suggestions with the medical information I need. This allows me to follow up with my own research so I can better understand and trust what I'm being told. He is not bothered or patronizing when I come in with my strong opinions, self-diagnoses and attitude, and he listens and hears what I have to say. In 30 years, he is also the first physician to successfully treat my high blood pressure. And he doesn't humiliate me with the "let's step on the scale" routine, or make me sit naked in a cold room with a paper gown for company. He keeps his schedule and while efficient, is caring and thorough.

The doctor is truly a specialist in her field of endocrinology. She has years of experience and knows her field well. She has worked so closely with my sister-in-law to monitor and track her diabetic condition, made recommendations, modified prescriptions and adjusted amounts; really tailored the specific needs of my sister-in-law. Dr. Smilo knows how to work with patients one-on-one with their specific diabetic condition. Folks with diabetes are at different stages. And even different needs at the same stages. The bottom line, my sister-in-law first went to Dr. Smilo last year, very concerned and stressed with her health. All her related levels were high and she was at Type II diabetes. Dr. Smilo has worked so closely with her, recently brought down my sister-in-law to PRE-DIABETIC condition. Dr. Smilo is a miracle worker. She's patient, understanding, listens well, but drills you to follow her guidelines to accomplish the goals; the end results to achieve a healthy patient to better deal with or eliminate the critical stages of diabetes. She might be old-school in some ways. I would like to see some methods and patient tasks more automated like patient/doctor tracking of readings/recordings to a spreadsheet, visually graph data/results, more allowance for comments, with options to print. Same with medications to track; old, new, changes in amounts or types, reasons, dates. Spreadsheet graphs would visually track the progress and any noticeable changes, also reflecting modifications in meds. Can result in less hard copy paperwork/paper files and faxing. And can be emailed and saved to personal e-files. Including references and handouts. But still have the hard copy option for those without or not familiar with automated tools. Dr. Smilo has quite an extensive background and years of practice. Her professional accomplishments, evident, on the wall in her office. She is a specialist in internal medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and metaboism. Her office summary of services mentioned includes diabetes management, abnormal lipids, high blood pressure and heart disease, treatment of acute illness for adults, weight management, and preventive medicine. Dr. Smilo was an associate Clinical Director at UCSF. And she was honored in 2011, being awarded TopDoc in San Francisco. If you want a thorough doctor who will achieve the results you want, Dr. Smilo is your endocrinologist or specialist, as mentioned, in other areas. My sister-in-law is happy with her first-hand experience and results. I can tell and am happy for her and my brother.

The rates are very reasonable given the high quality care of the doctors and the availability to go in on weekends and within the same day for urgent matters. They do not bill insurance, but they will give you a detailed receipt to submit to your insurance directly. When I had my previous insurance, my insurance covered 80% of the appointment fee. My new insurance has a high deductible, so my appointment fees won't be reimbursed, but I can submit my receipts from my appointments at Care Practice to go towards the deductible. The Mission location is great. It's a fifteen minute walk from my home. Today, I was able to schedule an appointment online when I woke up with worsening cough and sinus symptoms. I was seen on a Sunday, no waiting, and had a thorough exam and treatment plan. This is a great example of the reason I recommend Care Practice. They really do live up to their name by providing high quality healthcare.

I scheduled an appointment online using the website and headed down to Care Practice. So when I get there, it's a beautifully decorated office with cool books on the table. I checked in and as soon as I settled in, my Doctor was calling. Sad to say, I'm really not used to fast service at a medical center before now. I met with Dr. Vinh Ngo, who checked me out and spoke to me about my poor little cold and sore throat. He wrote me a prescription for the medicine he did not have, but the others he gave to me and charged me for them. I was impressed! You just saved me another 45 minutes waiting around in Walgreens. I really enjoyed the visit. The Doctor was great, the receptionist was great. I was in and out with my medicine in less than 30 minutes and spend a total of $112.00 with my meds. How could one sick girl be happier than that? Care Practice is a great alternative to paying the big bucks for medical insurance. I hardly get sick and paying $112.00 is way cheaper than most monthly plan preminums.

When time came for the procedure, that did not require anesthesia, I thought again his bedside manners were poor. This was confirmed shortly afterwards when he inserted an instrument into my body, without taking proper time and care. As a result I felt some pain during the whole procedure but, more importantly, I was in severe pain for the next two weeks, every time I had to go to the bathroom. I quickly contacted the doctor, but he and his staff were exceedingly slow in getting back to me and I didn't feel comfortable being examined by him again, so my only resource was to take pain killers that made my stomach worse. Several weeks later, only after they realized the severity of the damage that had been done, he and his staff started to frantically reach out to me. By that time, it was much too late for me.

He is the type of doctor, due to his thoroughness, who may diagnose a potential or acute illness before it becomes chronic or debilitating. He is somewhat in a league of his own. After complaining to her about my endometriosis symptoms, she basically said to my face that I was only experiencing period cramps, and that I did not know my own body (I was 33 when she said this). She told me to masturbate after I told her that sexual activity was agonizing. After about 3 years of her talking to me like I was ignorant, I had enough, and started going to another doctor. The other doctor sent me to a specialist, who diagnosed me stage 4 endometriosis. The adhesions were heading to my kidneys and lungs, and I had nearly 2 pounds of scar tissue removed from my body. I was in surgery for 9 hours. She also refused to give me a referral to a psychologist. I had to walk into a mental health facility and tell them I wanted to wnd my life in order to get the mental health help that I needed. The notes she left on my medical records made it very difficult for me to get proper care, and she listed me as a schizophrenic with drug seeking behaviors. I never once asked for pain killers, I only ever asked for help with referrals to an endometriosis specialist, a referral to a mental health specialist, and help figuring out why I had chronic migraines. By the way, I was not diagnosed as schizophrenic, I was diagnosed with Autism. I do not recommend her, to anyone.

I was lucky in that I didn't need surgery, but it was still a long road to recovery with first a cast, then a brace and then finally physical therapy. Unlike another reviewer, I found it very easy to interact with his office staff and get what I needed. I was covered with him on my Anthem Blue Cross PPO plan. Dr. Malige answered my many questions with patience, and was also direct about the range of motion work I still need to do to prevent future injuries. He was more cautious on timelines for returning to activity than my physical therapists, but I feel confident he was focused on my full recovery. He has great clinical staff too. A few tips (if ortho is new to you, like me): 1. Ask for the range of potential scenarios - "what's the min and max time you expect I'll be in a cast? - so you're not disappointed on progress. 2. Try to line up a physical therapist who is on your insurance at least 4-6 weeks before you need it, and probably 8 weeks. I tried when I needed them and found no one available for a long time. Timely PT matters. 3. On PT, do the exercises every day. It sucks, but if you don't, it just extends your recovery time. Best wishes for a speedy and full recovery!
