If you're in a town named Limerick, you expect to see plenty of leprechauns gallivanting about searching for their pots o' gold as they recite their, what else, limericks..."There was once a guy from Nantucket..." But no, laddie, t'is not the case here as it's a bustling little city with a pretty dense downtown where parking is at a premium. Jamie W. and I arrived here for a lunch stop on our long road trip between Dingle and Galway in the western part of Ireland. I thought Italian might be a nice change from all the pub fare we had been eating in the past three days, so I found this place on the Yelp app.
It was a rather generic but contemporary and clean-looking spot where we obviously missed the lunch rush since the place was empty save for two pregnant women with their toddlers running in circles. The menu is mostly pasta, four different pizzas and some share plates. I decided to get their €7.50 take on the starter-size Classic Caesar Salad. Baby gems instead of romaine lettuce and a creamy garlic dressing instead of a real Caesar dressing. It was a plentiful portion with croutons and grated Parmesan, though it had too much pancetta if there can be such a thing (photo: http://bit.ly/2fpsMXJ). Without much rationale, Jamie ordered a €2.90 side of Garlic Bread with Cheese (photo: http://bit.ly/2fH949i).
That struck me as redundant since we already got free bread and ordered individual-size pizzas. Jamie's was the €12 Napoli, a Southern Italian classic ladled with tomato sauce with pepperoni, mushrooms, onions and mozzarella on top (photo: http://bit.ly/2fihAP2). Mine was its Northern cousin, the €13 Venezia, an interesting mix of flavors on the same tomato sauce but with prawns, mussels, Parmesan, mozzarella, and a lot of arugula on top (photo: http://bit.ly/2eOQvT8). I rather liked mine for the seafood elements contrasting nicely with the peppery flavor of the arugula. Jamie's pizza was comparatively more pedestrian. Now it's time for me to do my leprechaun jig.
FOOD - 3 stars...decent enough pizza with the North seizing victory over the South
AMBIANCE - 3 stars...modern and quiet
SERVICE - 2.5 stars...a bit passive perhaps because it was after the lunch hour
TOTAL - 3 stars...Italian in Limerick is not that magically delicious read more
