The vibe of this place and the people that make it happen every morning are world class. Life situations kept me from making my way to the shop for a year or so, but when I walked in I was greeted with a smile and a "it's been a while!" The coffee is reasonably priced and imo - best in the area. It's consistent and while I'm a sucker for the 12oz cold brew - I've gone off script a few times and have always been pleased. I've got family that comes into town fairly often, and almost every morning they ask to go because they think about it when they're at home in Chicago. There's plenty of seating, tho it's sometimes so bumping (because it's a great spot!) it can be hit or miss if you can stick around and enjoy the vibe. But generally I've had good luck over the years setting up at a table and chatting with friends & fam before a hike, enjoying the morning with my pup doing some socialization training or throwing a few emails around to my corporate overlords. I've seen ads for their evening events and have been wanting to make it to one, but I always seem to see the poster days or weeks after the event! Seattle-Area Boba Shop Review #105…read more I first visited a Tra Viet location in Vegas, not expecting it to be a small chain originating in Washington! On the drive up back from Portland recently, we decided to stop by the original location (and only stand-alone store left in Washington) in Renton, down near the Boeing factory. This boba shop is known for serving drinks in essentially soda cans, complete with pop top. It's a unique concept, but it also means that value is less than competitors since the drink size is much smaller. Still, the quality is pretty high, at least enough to get us to visit based on what we ordered at the Las Vegas location. We ordered two drinks on our visit: Classic Milk Tea w/ Boba ($7.25) - No adjustments are allowed in this drink. The drink has a surprisingly strong malty flavor that pairs with the creamer nicely, delivering a thick and enjoyable experience. I believe the drink is premixed, which is why sweetness adjustments aren't allowed. Unfortunately it is too sweet for my tastes, especially since the boba soak adds even more sugar to the mixture. The ice levels, even at 100%, isn't too much. They use crushed ice that's easier to melt. The boba is of the mini variety, soaked well in syrup. They are actually cooked perfectly for this particular variety - great consistent chew and bounce on each tiny little pearl. I normally prefer full sized boba, but this one is very nice. I think their recipe can only use the mini boba - with the normal size boba at this texture, I would probably call it too firm, but it's perfect for the mini. Milk Tea Rating: 4/5 Boba Rating: 5/5 Jasmine Milk Tea, Less Sweet w/ Boba ($7.25) - This milk tea is very perfume-like with plenty of jasmine flower flavor. With the less sweet option, it's around 50% sweet compared to other shops, which matches up with my tastes. Again, it has good body but no dairy flavor. Overall a solid drink. We actually drank this about 2 hours after the Classic Milk Tea and somehow the boba was exactly the same texture. Usually the pearls start hardening up, but this was still perfect! Milk Tea Rating: 5/5 Boba Rating: 5/5 Usually places like this which focus on gimmicks don't exactly serve the best drinks. Tra Viet seems to be an exception. I had a friend gathering to go to the same night, and wanted to bring some desserts so this place came to mind. For it being very wet and rainy, this place feels like a nice relief from all that with the bright lighting and the cafe-like feel of the place. There's a grassy wall near the back for photo ops, and there are some tables, window seating and front couch seating. They don't only sell macarons here; there's also coffee, tea, and macaron ice cream sandwiches. I got a baker's dozen, which comes with 12 randomly assorted regular-sized macarons in a small container. This particular one came with three limited flavors: red velvet, cran-orange and a pear-like flavor. They were marked separately on a card provided with the box that shows all their regular offerings of macaron flavors. This came to $36 compared to $40 for the same number of macarons if you wanted to choose specifically which flavors you wanted instead. I also got myself a Thai tea macaron ice cream sandwich; each one is prepackaged and $8. Both people working at the counter were extremely helpful in helping me decide what to get, and explaining the differences between both sets. Flavor wise, I was not disappointed: - My Thai tea macaron ice cream sandwich hit the spot! The macarons did not come apart too easily and I could still maintain the shape of the sandwich throughout. Ice cream consistency is great, and the Thai tea flavor is not too strong. The whole thing is not too sweet by itself either, and this goes for all of their macarons in general. From other visits to their stand during conventions, I recommend their Cap'n Crunch berry, lemon, peach and durian flavors for ice cream sandwiches. - One of my friends and I loved the Vietnamese coffee flavored macaron. Taste is strong like phin-brewed coffee and it didn't have much sweet of a taste, something that would not have done well for this flavor. - The cran-orange and blueberry flavors were our other favorites; both had tastes that reminded me a lot of their respective flavors. - The box also had dark chocolate, vanilla, ube, Thai tea, pistachio and salted caramel flavors. All were decent and tasty. What I like about this place is that the taste for all of their macarons is exactly as advertised and never bogged down by the flavor that macaron shells are usually full of. I can't eat too many of these at once since they can be too sweet over time, so I would save these for a group setting where you can share these. By themselves, they are a great way to get your sweet tooth the love it needs!
