Unfortunately, I should have stuck with Busy B's. This was my first order from Soul Food Cafe, and it will definitely be my last. I ordered the smothered pork chops with broccoli cheese casserole and macaroni and cheese. I also tried the cube steak, cornbread dressing, and fried chicken. Honestly, the entire meal was a huge disappointment. The rice that came with the pork chops was undercooked, which was surprising because no restaurant should be serving rice that isn't fully cooked. The cube steak and cornbread dressing were not enjoyable at all, and the fried chicken was bland and lacked flavor. I'm genuinely confused by all of the great reviews because my experience was the complete opposite. Based on the meal I received, I can't recommend this restaurant. Busy B's may be more expensive, but in my opinion, they're worth every penny because the quality and flavor are consistently there. Unfortunately, Soul Food Cafe was a complete miss for me. Based on my experience, I would give it 0 stars.

I literally searched Black-owned restaurants in the area/going toward home. I was leaving commencement downtown and wanted to get something to eat. Walking in, there is a lot of open space and I needed to take the time to read their signage to see what I needed to do. They ask that you not be on your phone while in line. They have their menu posted and some chalkboards with other menu items at the start of the line. There is so much to choose from and everything looks fresh. The woman taking my order was helpful and kind. I was almost overwhelmed, but decided on the smothered porkchop with rice, candied yams, dressing, peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, and a sweet tea/lemonade to drink. I paid roughly $40 after adding the tip. I sat down to eat and enjoy my food. They were playing 90s R&B and it wasn't too loud so you couldn't hear yourself think. It was at an enjoyable volume that you could sing the words in your head and still talk to people at your table. The food tasted amazing. I was not able to finish it all and was ready for a nap after eating. Everything was flavorful. I LOVED seeing so many young people working in this establishment. Everyone I encountered was a young adult; even the young men working in the kitchen who made brief appearances at the front were young adults. They were all so professional and polite. I ordered through DoorDash and went with the turkey wing with macaroni and cheese along with the oxtails. I also chose cornbread as my bread option. The turkey wing and mac and cheese were solid. My only feedback is I wish it were more clear what came with rice and gravy. I ended up with double rice because I did not realize the oxtails already came on a bed of rice. The oxtails were a decent size but there were only two pieces and both were mostly fat. The flavor overall was okay. It was not bad at all but it did not completely blow me away either. The cornbread was the biggest disappointment. It came wrapped in foil and was both burnt and soggy at the same time. It was so overcooked that someone had to have seen it was not up to standard and still decided to cut it and serve it. For a place that prides itself on being a homemade style restaurant, that was surprising. Even with that, I would still try them again. It was a Sunday so maybe I just caught them on an off day. The food was filling and I can see why people talk about them. I am willing to give them another shot.

My mothers and I visited Platez last night for a nice dinner out before a show. We didn't have a…read morereservation, but was seated immediately. There was some confusion on where to enter the building due to lack of signage, but we figured it out. Upon entering, I immediately was overwhelmed by how loud the music was. I have sensory issues and asked if we could be seated outside, but was told that there was a party outside. We were seated inside and no one in my group could hear each other speak the whole time we ate due to how loud the music was. We couldn't hear the server either. Our server immediately gave us menus, silverware, and waters. He didn't introduce himself or really say much of anything. We were left to look at the menus for 5-10 minutes. Upon looking at the menus, we were extremely disappointed to see that much of what we came for was not available due to it being a brunch item. This was not communicated ANYWHERE on the website and we would not have chosen to dine here had we known. We chose to stay and eat due to already paying $10 for parking across the street. Once we came to terms with the fact that we would not be eating french toast or waffles, we began looking at the menu to decide what to order. It was then that I noticed how expensive everything was. The food is even more expensive than the menu on the website, and the item that I decided upon - the catfish and grits - was $30. This is unreasonably expensive for what it was and I would have priced it at about $18 to be generous. We ended up waiting about 40 minutes for our food and eventually my catfish and grits and my mother's shrimp and grits were served. The sauce around the grits was cold, and the grits themselves weren't super hot. It was obvious that they had been sitting while the fish and shrimp was being cooked. The portion itself was too much to eat in one sitting and grits are not something that would reheat well so we left them instead of trying to take them home. When our grits were served, the waiter told us my step-mother's smothered pork chop would be right out. It did not come for another 10 minutes. One of her sides was a salad, but not even that was brought out. While my mother and I's grits were phenomenal in flavor, my step-mother's pork chop was barely edible. She said that it was tough, especially when she was not provided anything more than a butter knife to cut with, and the gravy on top was so salty that I gagged upon tasting it. It tasted like gravy mix from a packet that was combined with the drippings from a meat that had already been seasoned. My step-mother prefers things to be more salty, but even she had to peel the breading off to be able to eat the pork chop. Keep in mind, this was also about $30. Our service was poor. The waiter didn't introduce himself, as I said, and he did not ask if we wanted anything more than water to drink. He was barely able to be heard over the loud music, but he also didn't say much. He did not check up on us during our meal or say anything while we waited 40+ minutes for our food. And when we went up to the cash register to pay our bill, we were left standing there for about 5 minutes while various servers and workers walked by and went behind the register without even acknowledging our presence. This was very off-putting and a terrible way to end a lackluster dinning experience. Upon paying our bill, we were forced to pay a mandatory 15% tip and a 7% service fee. And then they had the audacity to ask for an additional tip despite their poor service. We all left Platez feeling very disappointed, despite how delicious my mother and I's grits were. We all had the sentiment that we would have had a better time eating at Waffle House because we went for brunch food in the first place. Platez is (in my opinion) horribly overpriced and the service was terrible. I try to be positive, but I would never come here again nor would I recommend it to anyone.

It took well over an hour and a half after ordering for our food to arrive. I ordered the chicken & waffles, cornbread bites, and a strawberry peach margarita. The cornbread bites with honey drizzle were a nice start, and the margarita was balanced and refreshing. Unfortunately, the chicken--though cooked properly--wasn't seasoned, and the waffle was overcooked. On top of that, the service left much to be desired. I had to ask multiple times for condiments and waited over 20 minutes just to receive them. Customer service is very important to me, and this really hurt the experience. What made it worse was the bill. A large party tip, an extra "service fee," and then a regular tip option added up to an outrageous total -- especially considering the lack of preparation, slow service, and disappointing food. Overall, while the drinks were good, the combination of unseasoned food, long waits, and excessive charges makes it hard for me to recommend this place or want to return.
