For my friend and I, the name of this salon is synonymous with pain; she got her nosed pierced here…read morewhile I was a little more masochistic and opted for a bikini wax. Putting the pain aside, this place is a class act! Firstly it is strictly a ladies salon and plainly says so on their flyer, so absolutely NO men, though I'm not sure where she stands on anyone in between. At first, the lady who attended to us (I suspect she's the owner as well) had a very "don't mess with me" air about her, but she's actually very open to doing what the customer actually wants; a memo I believe many hair salons haven't received. For example, she made a sugar wax especially for my appointment, and was kind enough to tolerate our antics (holding hands, moral support etc) Located on Nicolson street, Mode is extremely easy to find, and apart from ear and nose piercings, as well as any waxing or threading, she's primarily a hair salon, and seemed to be quite an expert at colouring. The salon is made to look quite modern, as many do, but it also extremely clean. Good experience all round.

She washed my hair nicely, although the water could have been a bit warmer and nicer. When I sat down with the woman for the actual haircut (I'm reluctant to call her a real stylist), I said I wanted a little trim of about an inch or an inch and a half and shower her how much to cut off so that it would still be below my shoulders. She seemed to cut and cut, and then be called away for the phone or the front desk, and then she came back and cut some more. When she had finally finished and changed to drying my hair, it felt like she was going to pull my hair out since she was brushing my hair (and scalp!) so hard. In the end, my hair was much above my shoulders and cut English-style so it was longer in the back but just below my chin in the front. Not exactly what I was hoping for, and the experience wasn't the best as there as almost zero chatting during the whole hour (yes it took a whole hour!) I was there. Luckily I had bought this haircut as a KGB deal, but I won't be back and I wouldn't recommend others spend £40 on a haircut here (their normal price).

I went to the wax bar straight afterwards because I wanted to cry at my nails. They gave me an appointment for the sat morning although I think they got me in after I showed them my nails. They were a joke. I felt sorry for them also as it's not nice having to put some one else's work right. They had no problems with this and just wanted to put them right for me. Sat morning and the service, the treatment was first class here in the wax bar. The girls were lovely and I think they were all pleased including me with the end result. They are now beautiful for a exciting and beautiful day on Monday. I could not be more thrilled with my nails. And this time I have shellac on my nails instead of nail Polish and a clear top coat that just came off with nail Polish. I am so so pleased I choose the wax bar and have to say they have gained a happy customer and I most certainly will go back. I also happened to pick up a price list of all the procedures they do so will definitely be taking some of these treatments up also. Needless to say I am walking on air now with my nails. There stunning. First class service thankyou.

Gel mani lasted 15 days until I soaked it off only because the growth was showing. Apart from that, one tiny chip day 9 or 10, zero peeling, almost no wear on the tips (and I chose a dark color!). I got loads of compliments on my nails. Mani itself was relaxing and pampering. Lovely hand massage, gentle but thorough cuticle care. Minx pedi lasted about the same but I removed it even though it still held up in great condition. They offer several options depending on how much time you have and how much pampering you'd like. If you have some time and the pounds to spare, you absolutely will get what you pay for here. Staff was super friendly and attentive. I definitely look forward to returning!

I am still scratching shellac off the skin because the technician refused to remove it. When I commented on the problem, the technician got angry with me for requesting too complex a service and for waiting to notice the spots (a French manicure with a gold top coat falls under the standard menu everywhere that I have been, and I can't see under the nails while the tech is working on the top of the nail). When I asked to speak to the manager, the technician said that her mother owned the salon and that I would not get anywhere with a complaint. Staff called to hustle me for more money the next day. I paid in advance well more than I have ever paid for the same combination of services, but staff demand almost twice as much money by claiming the advanced payment was only a deposit. They literally increased the price after the service because I complained. It is also worth noting that the salon is dirty, disorganized, and badly decorated with cheap tacky synthetics. The service finished late, causing me to miss a show. I was there for hours and they felt put upon when I asked for water. Most places offer tea or water if not wine and food as part of the package. And for some reason the spa had a blood and carnage military movie playing complete with pieces of people's bodies being gutted and blown apart. My manicure was nothing but carnage. Not typical viewing for a day spa! If you are performing a service on another person's skin, you try to create a safe, neutral space for all and make it about the needs of the client and not your spoiled ego.

For starters, if you're anything ore than a size zero you'll need to hold your breath in as you sidestep dow the ridiculously small aisles, otherwise you risk knocking everything off. And if the thing you're looking for is on any other shelf than the top one, forget it. That was annoying enough, but when I finally did find the hairbrush section the only one that looke vaguely like what I wante was nearly £10. Not a chance, Sally. Instead, I went to Boots further along the street and got a much better one for £2. And I can't say I'll ever rush back to Sally again.

This place is great because once I found my favourite stuff I go here and go lareg which saves me loads. This is one of the only shops in Edinburgh that has the full (and very, very beautiful!) range of OPI nailcare and nail varnishes. They have a massive rane of hair dyes so what I've done in the past is bought the stuff for a hairdresser friends to do instead of paying salon prices. NB I do not recommend this if a)you don't trust your friend or b)you don't have a friend who is qualified!!

The staff are friendly and attentive, and in my experience they have taken their time to do the job properly. You can have refills of tea/coffee/soft drinks as you require them, I find the experience of getting my hair done a very enjoyable one! It was a few days before Christmas and asked if there was a spot later that day for a cut and blowdry and lucky me, there was. As the last customer of the day, I was sat down and asked if I wanted a coffee, tea or Bucks fizz (if it's like this after Christmas as well, i'll definitely be back!). My hair was washed professionally, and the hairdresser gave advice on what I should do with my hair. She noticed quite well I wasn't a superchatty person, so the chitchat was kept to a minimum. She finished my hair quickly, blowdried it and added a few curls to it. £40 poorer (ouch) and with a smile on my face, I left the shop again.

Just at that time there were no other customers. I requested an eyebrow thread & tint + eyelash tint (£25 total). Both were fairly quickly. The dye on my eyebrows was maybe a bit too dark, but it'll settle in no time. Will return as it's good value and just as good, if not better, than the 'guru' Shavata. The lady spent about an hour on my nails, but she didn't clean my cuticles properly. I asked her to make them look clean, but she barely touched them. She applied two layers of clear base and then two layers of a nude milky shade -- which looked nothing like what I had asked for. The result: bulky gel around the cuticles, uneven application, and one nail that wasn't even shaped round. When I pointed out that one nail looked off, she said, "Your finger isn't even." Her command of English was poor, which made it hard to explain what I wanted. I skipped pedicure cause I expected it will be a disaster. Since I had to rush to another appointment, I left but later called back to complain. I explained that I was unhappy with the result and that this wasn't BIAB. The man I spoke to told me to come back so they could redo it. When I returned, I explained again that the nails were bulky, uneven, and nothing like what I had asked for. They didn't seem to understand me, and he said, "She did a good job. I can remove it if you like, but we don't do BIAB color." I was shocked -- why didn't they tell me that in the morning before taking the booking? In the end, he removed the top layer, told me to wash my hands, gave me back my money, and left me with cracked, unfinished layers still on my nails. They weren't cleaned, smooth, or wearable. Overall: a complete waste of time, unprofessional, misleading, and the worst nail experience I've ever had.
