While turrones, a European nougat confection, wasn't first made in Barcelona, La Campana, is the first shop in Barcelona to make it! They've been making these delicious treats (and more) since 1890! On my visit I got to sample their orange, and original and enjoyed both. I think compared to what you could get in the US these prices are fair, but compared to other local shops (that may not have the historic name notoriety) these turrons are priced much higher. 1 medium blocks €6.90 1 taster blocks €2.40 They do taste natural and not processed, so if you're looking for a great gift idea from Barcelona, this would be a good option!

Now I say "enviously" because, while I long for the Spanish-style bakes of dreamy soft bread, what I get instead, living in New York City, are the pastries following the French style. That is, lots of croissant and croissant iterations and flaky desserts with not a touch of that gentle soft dough common to Spain. But I digress. Mistral Forn offers many of those said soft breads, most prominently this treat called ensaimada. It is made of this delicate thin dough, coiled into a spiral and, once baked, dusted with powdered sugar. They also come with fillings, including pumpkin jam (delish) or custard. Here, I tried the ensaimada with the latter filling, and it was everything I wish New York City bakes would be. Soft dough, sweet but not too sweet. Comforting. Cozy. None of that crusty bread scratching the roof of your mouth. I do wish New York City would open a Spanish bakery. I don't know if that will happen any time soon, but a girl could dream.

It's mostly just beautiful.. the taste, though.. soothing, it's overwhelmingly sweet. Somethings are meant to be photographed and not enjoyed. Cherry flavors seem lost if one didn't know what flavor it was as they bite into it. Tartin - flavorful, sweet with a buttery crumbly base. At first bite everything's wonderful but at second, third chew, it starts to get too sweet. But still good. It's not as pretty as the rest but flavor wise, it works the best. Their pastry sections are more of their strong suit when it comes to taste. Croissants are flaky and buttery, not to mention a great deal for one. €1.10 for a plain croissant. It's also beautifully made. Overall, don't do what I did when I came here and try to eat all three super super sweet mousse tartlets in one sitting, instead maybe take them home or hotel and enjoy with some sugar-free coffee. This patisserie has their presentation down. But it's for the sweet tooth not for the faint-tongued. Service are generally well. All the employees there seem to speak English so if you're not from Spain or can't speak the language, no worries. Last tip: try to come early as it tends to get busy during pastry craving hours. Rumor has it (source: google) this patisserie is owned by an award winning chief.
