    Pepita Bread Ham Sandwich
    Derek K.

Rating: 97/100 pts This is truly an exceptional bakery. If you don't read to the end, know that after coming here, I returned for a second time the very next day, and would gladly have done so every day if I lived nearby. Even coming twice did little to quell my fervent desire for this fantastic bread! Craft-focused chefs are working just beside the area where you line up, which you can affirm yourself through the glass windows. Watch as they ardently knead, bake, and finish bread and pastries, which they bring fresh out of the oven, right into the display case. It doesn't get fresher than this. The first section of the display case contains their regular/loaf breads, which continues into their sweet pastries, and ends in their savory sandwiches. Over the course of two days' breakfasts, I tried a good sampling of all their items, and all of it was fantastic. In particular, the savory sandwiches were an amazing deal: they have one with thinly sliced ham, artisan cheese, and greens, drizzled with olive oil on pepita bread which was among the best sandwiches I've ever had. (Only to be rivaled by the olive bread, sun-dried tomato vegetarian sandwich I had the following day.) The phenomenal bread would guarantee a great sandwich, but this is further enhanced by stellar quality ingredients. Note that the upper floors of this bakery are a hotel. During prime hours of the day, priority is given to hotel guests for use of the cafe space, so be ready to take it to go if you aren't staying here. And don't miss their deliciously foamy Cafe con Leche!

Oh boy, Baluard is amazing. I loved my pastry here. If I lived in Barcelona, I would try to live as close as I could to a Baluard. We stopped in early in the morning where locals were coming in to pick up a quick breakfast option or bread for the day. The pastry case here is beautiful and full of wonderful breads and pastries. I wish I could have had one of everything. People here order quickly and while no one rushes you, to keep up with the local traffic, be ready to pick out what you want. Lots of smiles here as well, especially to us tourists who spoke limited Spanish. So great, and definitely a perfect spot for breakfast (limited coffee options available as well).

Really wanted to try this place, because of the good reviews - read somewhere that the bread/pastries here would be "French" in terms of caliber/quality. I didn't get around to visiting Baluard (near the beach, your stop should be Barceloneta on L2, I think) until the night before I had to leave Barcelona. I didn't want to get more money from the cash machine. I had about €15 left in bills & coins, & €6 of this was for the Aerobus. Lol. I thought I be hustlin' or I buy somewhere where food is affordable. I figured Baluard was a good place to go. There was a short queue, & it looked like mostly locals were buying bread. I ordered an Ensaimada (my friend said it would be different from the Ensaimada we're familiar with), a pastry with peach & pistachios, & a flaky spinach pastry. All of these cost €5. I cut these in half, & left half with my BCN roomie. I'm pretty sure he enjoyed them, too. I thought Baluard's pastries were of great quality. I'm not sure I have a good basis for comparison, but they kind of reminded me of Laduree's croissant in that they apparently use good butter - just the right amount of it, so it's not like a grease factory, & the ensaimada & peach pastry had the perfect amount of sugar, so the sweetness was just right. I think I know my sweets, & I hate it when desserts are either TOO sweet, or not sweet enough. They probably weigh their ingredients here. Definitely going back, the next time I'm in BCN :))

Facing the big structure, to the left if the blue P "parking" sign is Baluard.

Savory items such as the puff pastry with chicken or jamon are flakey & cheesy. You are what you eat. Get a few, because after we tried to split one, we went back. The women behind the counter are dressed like Maria Von Trapp when she styled the kids in curtains. Get a variety of items and sit on the bench and people watch here. My recommendations: Baguette, croissant, ensaimada, truffles, sandwich on the nut grain bread, San Sebastián loaf. Carb heaven ! Some well known restaurants in BCN post that bread is provided by Baluard. It's such a well known quality product amongst the community, you must get off your tour bus for this.

Now I say "enviously" because, while I long for the Spanish-style bakes of dreamy soft bread, what I get instead, living in New York City, are the pastries following the French style. That is, lots of croissant and croissant iterations and flaky desserts with not a touch of that gentle soft dough common to Spain. But I digress. Mistral Forn offers many of those said soft breads, most prominently this treat called ensaimada. It is made of this delicate thin dough, coiled into a spiral and, once baked, dusted with powdered sugar. They also come with fillings, including pumpkin jam (delish) or custard. Here, I tried the ensaimada with the latter filling, and it was everything I wish New York City bakes would be. Soft dough, sweet but not too sweet. Comforting. Cozy. None of that crusty bread scratching the roof of your mouth. I do wish New York City would open a Spanish bakery. I don't know if that will happen any time soon, but a girl could dream.

The ensaimada was wonderful. The pumpkin inside was light and not too sweet. The outer pastry was so soft with a generous amount of powdered sugar. I couldn't stop eating this.

We tried one of their chocolate desserts, a chocolate chip cookie and a matcha drink. All of them were great.. so great that I ended up buying a pistachio brookie to go. To this day we regret not buying more stuff to bring back home. The service was great and quick. The place was clean and cute to dine in with a few tables! Overall I'd definitely stop by if I'm in Barcelona again!

Chok is for chocolate…read morebut they didn't sell any actual chocolates... but there was a rotation of special flavored cinnamon rolls, rookies, brownies, mini cakes, cookies, and cheesecakes. There were a few loaves of bread but mostly there were those sweets and it seems they have those all the time. We got a regular cinnamon roll because the flavored ones didn't have as much of the frosting on it which is the best part, and a pistachio cream rookie... no im not sure what a rookie is but it looked like a Levain cookie (the famous one from NY) as it was a mountain of a dessert. We had both treats heated up... although they weren't actually hot lol. The cinnamon roll was on par with others I've had, maybe even slightly drier but the frosting was amazing and I still enjoyed it a lot. The rookie was quite decadent and the inside was an almost cake texture? Still quite tasty but I think both would've knocked it out of the park if they were actually hot and ooey gooey. Five stars because it wasn't bad but I can't say I'm super impressed. I will be going to other gf bakeries over this one
