Very central location walking distance from many hotels and the main train station. As a traveler, I was somewhat surprised by how few "local" or old fashioned Finnish restaurants there are in the city center. Glad to have found this place. Although it is safe to assume that the menu items are not the kind of food that a Finnish grandma would cook for you, the menu does offer many dishes that feature local ingredients. I ordered two tapas/appertizer-sized items featuring salmon, wild boar and reindeer. The food was beautifully presented. The salmon was very fresh and flavourful. The wild boar was tender and not dried. Cured reindeer tasted very good (I wish they were a bit more generous on the reindeer. Only a tiny slice was served with my dish). The restaurant has most of the tables on the second level with big bright windows offering a good view of the busy street.

They serve a homemade malt bread which I had never had before, a touch of sweetness but savory and definitely delicate at the same time but the butter is absolutely fantastic and a flavor I cannot pinpoint but unique and delicious. The celeriac (vegetarian) dish is a must have, flavorful and delicate at the same time. The dessert portion is really tiny (the cake slice could only accommodate three blueberries on top!) but it is nice and the cream igelayo is soft and delicious. I think prices are a bit steep for the portions but I guess they are in line with similar establishments in Finland. Definitely recommend.

The building is from the 1930's and is a text book example of the era's architecture. So if that's something that interests you I would definitely recommend the place if you are visiting Helsinki. The food is quite expensive but for a special occasion it's perfect. They usually have a season theme menu on offer, e.g. blinis (all you can eat!), asparagus, etc which I hear are a good deal and worth the money.

It had just snowed several inches so the sidewalk was slippery. As I was approaching, I slipped on some ice and hit the ground hard like a hockey check. It was a bit embarrassing, so I entered the restaurant feeling a bit humbled. Grotesk is the kind of restaurant that can lift up a humbled man by reminding him where he stands on the food chain. I ordered the Black Angus Sausage with Sauerkraut as an appetizer/snack, and the Black Angus Flank Steak. The sausages and sauerkraut was just a tiny portion. Three bites served in a bowl the size of a teacup. Not filling at all, but full of flavor. The sauerkraut seemed a little creamy with some mustard seeds mixed in there. Very tasty. I like that this steakhouse is not afraid to tell you that your steak will be served medium-rare. It was served with some extra crispy fries, bearnaise sauce, roasted onion and a salad. It was presented as shown in the photo below. At first I was annoyed that everything was presented on separate plates, but it turned out that this way helped me to slow down and enjoy the flavors. The steak was cooked just as they said, and was seasoned with large salt crystals. Delicious. The weakest parts of the meal was the salad and the fries. The salad was meh. The fries were tasty and crispy, but maybe overcooked. I know they were intended to be well done, but some of them were on the verge of burned. Nothing some salt and a dunk in the bearnaise sauce couldn't cure. Overall it was a great meal and I left feeling restored to full carnivore glory.
