I starting with Belair in 2005 as i was shopping for a better rate than my current insurance provider. The rates were one of the best at that time. In 2006 the rates went down as promised and I was pleased. I'm a 9 star driver with a perfect driving record so when i turned 50 in 2007 i expected another rate drop, but it went up. I called enquiring about the increase and was told it was a government related issue. Each year it went up around 5% so in 2011 i shopped around again. I used belair for both home and auto since 2005. My rates jumped around 25% over that period of time, even though i made no claims and my driving record remain unblemished. They also cancelled my 0 deductible which I've had for 5 years! After making several enquires online i found Grey Power to have the best rates, over $400 less on my auto and home combined. When i called to talk to an agent and finalized everything, my coverage was not only better than Belair, the rates were actually slightly less then the online quote. read more

If we could give a 0 out of 5, we would. We have been home owners for over 30 years. We have had continuous home insurance with Belair direct in BC since they took over from CDI, we have never had a claim with them. Our premium has doubled over the past 5 years, with the greatest increase of 40% in the last 2 years. We called Belair twice to inquire about the significant increase in our premium, we were given different reasons by agents. The first agent gave us reasons of "non-specific" global disasters (upcoming earthquake, Alberta forest fires, etc), and that insurance premium is calculated based on postal code. The second agent told me it's the age of our house, the size of our house, etc. Funny thing is that my sister lives 4 houses from us, we share the same postal code, we have very similar homes built by the same builder, same age of homes, very similar insurance coverage, the only difference is her home insurance premium is about 40% less than ours from a different insurance provider. Belair Direct HAD reasonable, competitive premiums, but this is not the case anymore. We will be looking at other insurance providers. read more

I used to be with Canadian Direct, which was taken over by BelairDirect. When I had to renew the insurance, although I had no claims, my insurance went up by $60/year. The explanation was that I had a car accident in 1994, but they failed to look at my driving records with no traffic violations in 20 years. I went back to ICBC and got a better insurance for less than I was paying before with Direct. Better stick with the devil I know than dealing with two of them. When I cancelled my policy with BelairDirect they were very polite and only said OK and Thank you, without any questions or attempts to retain a client. read more

I have two cars and a home insured with Belairdirect with annual premium of $2,500. Been with them for years. I was involved in a car accident (first in 57 years of driving) October 6, 2016 where my car was totalled. Not my fault, other driver was charged. Called Belair from the accident scene, to find out where car should be towed. She did not know, took 10 minutes on my cel phone,(while I am in shock) naming off local towns where they might have a collision repair dealer. When she decided on one, I asked what tow company to use, complete silence. After police completed their report and charged the other driver, I phoned in to alert Belair to my claim. One day later I get a call from Roger Casperz who said he was my claim adjuster, who advised me it was really difficult to get to him on the phone, it was best to use email. So I sent him a synopsis of the accident, pictures of my demolished car, sales advertisements of a replacement car of same age and mileage. He came back with an offer that was 60% of the replacement cost. I have no issue of his proposal to satisfy my claim, that is between us. What does disturb me is that I asked him how to get a rental car for transportation, and he was silent. I asked him what the claims process was, he was silent. I have sent him two further emails with further documentation of my claim, and I have not heard from him in 18 days. Today, October 28, I called their claim service to find out the status of my claim. They put me on hold for 7 minutes, then said they were going to pass it on to a supervisor and I should have a response within 4 days. Belairdirect increase my home insurance prmuim for 31% at the renewal. The only reason is my building value increased 5.5%. I think they just give you low price at the 1st year, then they put your price on the rocket. This is their market strategy. read more

Like the previous poster, I also received a registered letter with the "final notice". I also did not receive any email, a phone call or any direct mail from the company saying that my yearly premium was due. I have been a customer for over 15 years and certainly have in the past. I followed up with belair and I was given the brush off about the issue, but they would gladly take my money now. I explained that they should investigate why a customer wouldn't get notice. The agent said that he could only take my money and had no one that he could escalate the issue to. I mentioned that he should bring it up with his boss or supervisor, but he was reluctant. By the end of the conversation, he said he would make note of it, but I have a feeling that it went nowhere. That is not customer service. read more

BellairDirect was very good until they were bought out by Intact. Our experiences were fast and fair. But recently we had a string of disasters to our home. Floods,theft and a fire. Because this transpired within a 5 year period My Premium was increased 25% and my deductible increased by 400 %,, you read correctly, fr0m 500$ to 2000$. To add insult to injury the claims period was 59 months, In short, if I had waited one more month for my final tragedy I would not have been penalised at all. So here I am, blackballed, so I can not go to another carrier and stuck with this 400% increase in my deductible and 25% in my premium. They will not even tell me when this penalty will go away. I have been a client for nearly 7 years. I was happy as far as car insurance was concerned - friendly stuff, good service when claim is filed, quick and no hassle. However, home insurance with Belair Direct is a whole other story. Different agents give different answers to the same question. For instance, they are confused as to what the deductible would be for the earthquake insurance - 5% of the building amount or 5% of the single. In my case the difference between 25 000$ or 50 000$. They really have to get their competence straight. I'd hate to discover the truth when I'd need to file a claim with them. After 7 years, without any indication they decided to send an appraiser for my house. Which ordinarily would be fine with me, if only they were to give me a prior warning. One day a woman called demanding an appointment immediately, saying that my insurance sent her over. I seriously suspected a con, even did research on her identity - she called Friday night, Belair offices were closed. I guess they could have respected me enough to call me a priory, but it looks like they did not. The appraisal happened to take place one month into my new term . She came up with a report, after which Belair sent me an ultimatum - build railing alone my 1 foot tall backyard deck or else. And oh yes - do it now. They gave me 2 months. This is not required by the building code. Decks and porches above 2 feet tall do. My whole neighborhood is filled with homes who's front porches, big and wide 1 to 2 feet tall have absolutely no railing and it is perfectly fine - the city is fine with that. Not to mention that I like it that way - this is my patio and I like to be able to move freely through and step down anywhere along the perimeter. Not to mention that the railing would be ugly and expensive. Not to mention I have no budget for it. Not to mention, that I can't possibly find a free contructor to build it immidiately - we need to book them few months ahead of time. Which does not matter in the end, since I have no intention or desire to fulfill this stupidity anyhow. I called and spoke with their rep, and asked if they even bothered to measure the height of the deck, for the building codes do not require this. They told me yes, the building codes do not, but we as insurance company do. In case if someone comes to my (locked) backyard and falls down. I am not sure who they meant, since no one ever comes to my place, but that is besides the point. The point is, if tomorrow the insurance company fancies themselves you having to put mattresses all over your premises (in case if someone falls of their feet and hurts themselves) I would have to comply. No matter how moronic it may be - a customer would have to fulfill their fancy . Needless to say - I left them effective immediately, and they charged me the penalty - adding insult to the injury by saying that I should have parted with them before the end on my term to avoid paying it ! (while they sent the adjuster one months into the new one as I have mentioned in the beginning) All and all low degree of competence and professionalism, customers are not valued, they are rude and couldn't care less. read more

This has been by far the worst customer experience I've had. I would not recommend this company to anyone even if they provided insurance for free. The customer service and claim representative are rude and don't care about providing actual help. Their policies are sub par at best. I paid my car rental out of pocket and every time I call to get an answer on when it will be refunded I never do. I leave messages for the adjuster on my file and she never returns my calls! I honestly am extremely disappointed with this company! 3 of my siblings were insured with them and somehow I was the only one out of the 3 not counting some people I know that had to go through this 17 day process. Which is absurd! The 17 days start after the receive the papers back not even right away when you call them to get a quote and if you make a mistake or forget something you have to wait 17 days again. I call them and asked them where was the source for this legal document and reason for me not getting it right away? All representatives said it was a new law made this year by insurance companies which is completely false. Also, what kind of law applies to certain people and not all. Discrimination of some sort I say! They told me I could not bypass the process and had to wait 17 but did have the option to shop around with other insurance.....I'm beyond annoyed with the ethic and professionals in this company terrible service. read more

Highly don't recommend they make extreme decisions based on the company benefits... My Grandmother had insurance with these guys for god knows how long +20 years and still, unfortunately, has home insurance with them as well. told her they can't insure her car again after switching from Belair to intact the reason why she switched was to help me with a Multi-vehicle discount due to my high rates. Now my rates are down and she wanted to go back and well.. they told her no because the car had been in 2 accidents 2 years ago and I was the one driving the vehicle not to mention the year after that happened she was still insured by Belair.. so now they are saying she's a high-risk driver all because SOMEONE ELSE that was on the policy who was then removed and deemed illegal for me to drive the car under that insurance company is now saying NO. She has a clean driving record... horrible company they don't take consideration for the customers and they recklessly make decisions that don't make sense. read more

I obtained a car insurance quote online, and followed up with a phone call. I told the agent I would need to get back to him, so I could look into cancelling my current insurance provider. I asked if I could email him. He said they don't do email - first red flag. He also said there was no way I could contact him directly - another red flag. We set up a date and time for him to call me back. In the interim, I received a call EVERY DAY from the company, when I specifically set up an appointment. When my call was finally returned on the agreed upon day (but not at the agreed upon time), I made it clear that I was no longer interested (especially after reading many horrid reviews). For several days after this, I CONTINUED to receive phone calls from them (which I missed). Finally, I answered and told them to stop calling and harassing me. If I could give 0 stars I would. I moved from Tennessee back to Ontario. I was told by two different "agents", I use that term loosely since most questions I asked took around 5 minutes of hold time due to the "agent" having to ask the insurance adjustor. I was overcharge significantly, which I wasn't upset about since I was told that when all my information came to Belair would prorate and drop my payments. Well all my information came in, they lowered my payments but then refused to honor previous statements that they would prorate the last 6 months of my policy so I went with another insurance policy for my two vehicles and my house. My impression is that the "agents" say what is needed to insure the policy, or do not understand their own companies guild lines, either way I feel lied to and I will never use Belair again. read more

I was about to move both my car and home insurance to Belair but they denied my home insurance because there is a small flower shop next door. Apparently, they won't insure you if your home is within two addresses of a commercial business even though the rest of my neighbourhood is residential. NOW THIS IS WHERE THEY SCREWED ME I come back to belair direct after leaving for 4 months They made me do another application even tho everything is the same as it was when I left 4 months ago I called for help from the phone number listed thinking I'd get proper help to make sure application is done 100% so there's no issue went threw it clearly thought it was done correctly come to mail box I see my application saying it's not done right certain things the " professional " @ belair direct helped me with was incorrect this part is awesome ( BEST PART ALL MY CALLS ARE RECORDED ) So it shows the " professional " who helped me you can hear everything she was telling me to do but it's incomplete. 0 stars!!! Do not choose belair. They will give you the run around for every minor step through any claim. Last winter my car bumper was damaged. I took it to one of their approved shops for an estimate and i would hear back in 2 days. 2 weeks go by without a word at which poinf i call and discover i have a $500 bill for work that i never approved. My car was stolen this summer and even though i called to say it was found it was almost a week later before they figured it out and tried to blame me saying i was supposed to let them know. It would still be over 3 weeks before id get my car back. To make matters worse, their Carstar group of approved mechanics are sloppy and incompetent. Twice i have been given my car back and told that it fixed. First time, my mechanic found $900+ in damages (nobody checked the brakes or tie rods after it was stolen). Second time, transmission was destroyed in mid-august. I just got my car back last week aand it is now at my mechanics where he found that they never tightened the subframe bolts or replaced the gaskets to the muffler after replacing the transmission. This is apprentice 101 stuff and they cant even do that right. Still fighting with them about getting it fixed properly. I was told an adjuster would go to my car to approve the repairs. Now that it is at the shop they are saying it has to be moved to Carstar. DO NOT CHOOSE BELAIR DIRECT!!!!!! They are rude, never return calls (been wairing on one for 4 months now) and will constantly lie to their customera and are in business with sloppy shops! read more

I would not even give belairdirect a full star. It's the worst company to get insurance from. I was moving away due to work to another province and I called to cancel the insurance. The first agent tells me no charge they can just cancel and then I called an hour later differs agent tells me that since I am moving to another province I have to PROVIDE the company with my new address or else they would charge me penalty. Like it's my personal life I don't have to tell them where I work or where I will be living in the future. It is a complete horror story. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY AND EVERYONE IN IT. They gave me an adjuster that was away on training. When he returned we spoke once and then I was ignored. All calls and emails went unanswered. Then suddenly they gave me a horror of an adjuster. Out of the Blue switched over without notice and he was in a hurry to get my claim finished because he was going on holidays the next day. This is week 4 now and I am living in unlivable conditions. I can't find anything after my vandalism. My bed is in several pieces. My couches frame is broken with a piece of the frame rattling inside. That's what I have been sleeping on after spending one night on the floor. And the horror of an adjuster says there's nothing wrong with anything when there is broken pieces of crystal and furniture all over. He said he didn't know what it was that was rattling in my couch. I turned it upside down and unzipped the zipped underside to see a block from the frame just loose and floating around. He said "what's that"? "I don't know what that is?" Like I went outside and brought a brick in to put in the underside of my couch. UNbelievabel!!!! STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY BELIEVE ME. THis is week 4 and the adjuster is on his holiday while I sleep on a broken down couch due to vandalism, it's not a full length couch and my feet are hanging over the edge. I am 5'4". Not recommended. Not until a claim was made did the problems appear. Their high pressure call centres answer the calls quickly, but do not appear as very knowledable as they are not licenced. Expect rude people, transfers to someone else and eventially hang up. I'm not sure they have any licenced fulltime staff which makes it difficult to contact someone who can answer your questions. They deal with third party adjusters and others who will only cause confusion and delays in the process. Don't expect a speedy claim. I believe BelairDirect was taken over by Intact recently and it probably when things got worse then when they were with ING. read more

Do not consider Belair! I've been with them for 7+ years. The first accident I had back in 2015 which found the other driver to be at-fault, took a long 2 weeks to get resolved. I had to chase down the driver and even contacted the police station to get the status of my police report. I called Belair several times and the adjuster and service reps ALWAYS kept telling me they needed time for one thing or another. I even contacted the driver and insisted he sort himself out and contact his insurance company, and after he told me he did, I realised it was Belair who was dragging this for no valid reason. Than I spoke with the police station who told me my insurance company is making me run in circles when in reality they should be the ones doing so because I pay them. I submitted no claim in 7 years, paid them an astronomical amount for an old car and yet they couldn't help me speed this process up. So I had to drive around with a beaten-up car for 2 weeks and had major anxiety about the damage worsening since I had to drive it to and from work and school with my kids. Belair also failed to give compensate me for new car seats because they were involved in the accident. They broke that promise of sending a cheque for the purchase of new car seats. Fast-forward to 2016, in poor weather condition, I slid into a no traffic light intersection and got hit by a driver. It took Belair less than 1 day to deem me at fault AND inform me they cancelled my insurance for 2016-2017. They did not grant me the accident forgiveness that new clients are entitled to, even though I've been with Belair for 7+ years. I would NOT consider this insurance company because of their poor customer service skills, overpriced premiums and delays in resolving a claim. read more

I was with belairdirect for my car & home insurance from 2006 to 2010. I did not have a single claim all those years but belair kept increasing the insurance premium. Whenever I called the customer service to know why they are increasing my insurance premium I was given silly reasons like the model of your car had a lot of claims last year or houses in your neighborhood had a lot of claims. Called to give them a courtesy update on improvements made to our home, and they suddenly tell me they no longer can insure me -- zero claims EVER, huge deductible, and no explanation. Extremely unprofessional end to a long-time client relationship. I would recommend going with a local insurer rather than this "call in" substitute. I had car insurance with Belair for a year. Everyone told me they were really reasonable so I didn't do much homework (my fault). In my 10 years of driving I have never had an accident. I got into 1 accident (very minor) and filed a claim which caused my insurance to go from 345 to 675 per month when my policy renewed (I wasn't eligible for the first time accident forgiveness because I didn't ask for it when I started my policy - nor did they offer it). They blamed the premium increase on a combination of my accident and my postal code being downtown Toronto. I shopped around and TD Meloche saved me $2500/year and is charging me $238/month for the same coverage! I called Belair to cancel and to ask why their premium was so high and the agent said they aren't as competitive with their pricing as other insurers. Cost aside their customer service is brutal. Every time I called it somehow was increasing my premium cost, or there was something they couldn't do, red tape all over the place. read more

I am a Canadian Direct Insurance customer and since BelairDirect has merged with them I am writing this review for them. I didn't have any problems until I tried to pay my premiums up for the whole year instead of monthly debit, I gave my payment details over the phone and they just never took the payment, so I followed it up and then took the wrong amount and cancelled one of our policies in the mean time. I had wrong information from almost every person I spoke to and the last time I spoke to them one lady said that they are going to start monthly debits again and she transferred me to another lady who said they wouldn't debit my account ?!?! They acknowledged fault the whole way and when I asked if there would be any recompense for all the mistakes or if this is just how they treat their customers they said they would get back to me and never did, SHOCKING customer service! I was a passenger in a car that was rear ended this summer and when this had happened belairdirect was being very helpful.. I was first dealing with a woman who was very accommodating and concerned for my well being. Days after the accident I started to get back pain neck, neck pain and made my way to the drs. I was assessed by a dr immediately and then contacted belairdirect because i was going to need to do physiotherapy. Again everything was working out and I was happy. My claim was transfered to another woman who was cold and more interested in saving the company money then helping someone who was injured in a car accident. She then started telling me that i needed to provide her with my parents license plate numbers and that belair wouldn't accommodate me because i was a stranger to the policy and that even though i was an adult living in my parents home i was a dependent and if i failed to give her my parents insurance information (keep in mind my parents had no part in this) that she would "come find out herself what their license plate numbers were herself and after that shell suspend my therapy" I was a person sitting in a car that was rear ended.. i had no control over the accident and she wasnt at all concerned. I began to dig a little deeper to find out that she was throwing darts and trying to see what she could get away with. When myself and this extremely rude woman spoke again i told her that after many conversations with people who also work in this industry that i didnt need to provide her with such information and belair was indeep responsible for paying me for time off work, medical notes, prescriptions and that under no circumstance was i at fault and it should affect my physiotherapy she decided she wanted to make things more challenging. At this time she will no longer return my calls or the extended therapy request from my physiotherapist. I finally (after 3 months) received the money they owed me for some.. yes SOME medication i was prescribed for pain. I was given a cheque for only half the money they promised me and still have yet to receive anything else they owe me. Im beyond frustrated and eventually decided to call her manager who was also another cold individual who clearly hates his job because he said no more then " ill have her call you soon" and awkwardly said bye. This is no longer about the money belair direct owes me its the principle that they dont care about other peoples lives that arnt paying into their bills.. if you are a passenger dont expect much because they dont care at all about that. They try to pon you off on other insurance companies even though the person whos paying thousands of dollars a year is not only doing it for themselves but for the people they care about. Id never recommend belairdirect and if that means paying higher insurance monthly to avoid such hassle and money hungry people.. so be it.. My experience has been a terrible one and i have nothing good to say about this company. read more
