I've only ever sat in once though, and I was rather disappointed. The interior is rather dull but there are incredibly bright spotlights overhead. The service was average - everything ok but not especially friendly or good in any way. We didn't even bother to leave a tip as I was so disappointed by the experience. We were sat right next to the front door, so everyone coming in and out could have a good nosey at our food, and we were so close to the man at the next table that we might as well have sat together. 5/5 for the food - takeaway 3/5 for the sit-in experience.

Now the Excellent news: the food is fantastic, the staff are really friendly and it's a bring-your-own bottle place (there're a couple of off-licenses across the road) so the bill is much less than what you'd expect. Honestly, you can pay three to four times the bill elsewhere in town for food that's not as good. I can recommend the veggie vindaloo, tarka dhall, Bombay aloo, channa massala etc. etc. Plus, they serve complimentary poppadoms and pickles and table water: who else does that these days? Recent example: dinner at the Mangla for 13: bill £99. They don't accept cards so check down the back of your sofa for loose change and GO!

I ordered a Chicken Tikka Balti which is one of my favorite indian dishes (if it's done right). It was the most expensive indian dish that I have ever bought with 1 naan bread it cost £9.60, they also gave me a small starter which was a bag of salad and a sauce quite nice as well I had it after my balti. The Balti had plenty of meat in and had a rich thick spicey sauce, it was the hottest balti's that I have tried among restaurants and take-aways, I thought it was perfect at first but began to struggle towards the end because of the spices. I very much enjoyed the balti but the price is too steep unfortunatly, I may go back to Mangla and try a cheaper dish to see what it's like. The food is worth 5/5 but I have knocked off 1 star becauase of the cost.

Amazingly friendly (almost personal) service, extensive menu of classic dishes and exquisite chef's specials in a relaxed, old fashioned atmosphere. Can be a little pricey compared to some others, but once you've tried it, and if you appreciate good Indian food, it doesn't get much better than this. Regulars have been coming back for 20 years. Tandoori chicken on the bone starter is to die for. Lamb dishes are sublime and the meat falls apart with delicate flavouring. Not a place for super-hot lager swilling louts. If you want to appreciate the flavour and texture, this is it.

The menu is not huge, but there is certainly a wide enough choice. Portions are very generous, and this is one of very places that are not stingey when it comes to dishing out the rice. I highly recommend this place, beats most of the trendy Indian's in the area hands down, and without the pretetious decor.

The prices are ok, and if…read moreyou have an interest in seeing faded photographs of the restaurant staff with famous football players of days gone by, then this might be the place for you. It seems to me that The Balti House has everything going for it...apart from the food. The location is fairly good, close to Hockley and only 5 minutes or so walk from the Market Square. So, what's wrong with the food? Well, it's not that there is anything terrible about any of it, but i've never eaten anything there and thought "Wow!" when i've tasted it. The curries have always seemed to me not too dissimilar from ones that I can cook at home...and call me old fashioned, but when I go out for a meal, I want to be paying to eat something that I couldn't make at home. I just can't quite put my finger on what it is that is missing from the food here. Fresh coriander perhaps? Maybe they are actually healthier and contain less ghee / oil and salt...I don't know. All I know is, something is missing. Still, given the other options for a late night curry near Nottingham city centre, you could do worse. Noor Jahan on Mansfield Road, or the disgusting Sapna on St James Street are both worse than here. If you are in the area at the end of a night and you don't fancy pizza / kebab / chips, I guess you could do worse than give The Balti House a try. After all, what I appreciate in a curry may be different to what you do, and you might rate this place more highly than I do.

The decor and table settings are plain compared with some Indian restaurants, but the quality of the food and service are spot on. The owner and staff are friendly and very willing to make recommendations. I've had the Lamb Madras, Chicken Tikka Masala and Lamb Rogan Josh so far and each has the requisite layers of flavour. I tend to judge an Indian chef's skill based on an ability to apply heat without destroying the underlying explosion of flavour in the blend of spices used as a basis for the sauce. The food prepared here does not disappoint. The garlic naan may not be quite as light and fluffy as in other places, but the garlic is baked in and not added as an afterthought. I'll be back!
