Okay, I get that it's an institution and I get that it's really cheap and I get that it's open 24 hours and most of the 5 star reviews are actually from people that were blacked out drunk when they ate here. But I don't get the bagels. They're small and cold and untoasted. I ordered a lox and cream cheese and it came pre-prepared and didn't do much to impress me in terms of taste. These are nothing like American style bagels, so don't go in expecting a giant cruncy bread thing. They're fairly small and have a gloriously chewy texture. I love going early on a weekend morning, before the Shoreditch cool kids are awake, and buy a bag of beigels to take home and eat through the weekend. If you're lucky and get them fresh, they don't need toasting and are perfect on their own. We've also hosted very successful brunches at home where these are the centerpiece, and so easy! read more

Brick lane wouldn't be the same without its two 24 hour bakeries. They both were a saviour to my two years studying for my architectural diploma which yes means that I've actually been here sober and at all times in the day! The two years ive been coming here have allowed me to sample most of whats on offer and i have to say there really is very little in it between the two. Making the choice i have to say I generally prefer the shop next door especially for my bargain staple that is the £1.50 smoke salmon and cream cheese beigel. However when it comes down to it only one thing really matters - the infamous salt beef and mustard beigel. For this signature institution of the area this bakery takes the crown. Here they have always seemed to fill it ever so slightly more and it always feels that tiny bit fresher. An absolute must if you've never had one and at £3.50 a bargain which will silence any empty stomach. Come sample a genuine piece of East End history. read more

Mmm... Love the salt beef with mustard on rye bread! I also love the filled bagels with either herring or smoked salmon. Salad is available for an extra price. The cakes are not bad for t he price. But I have eaten better. The food is big portioned, tasty and cheap. By don't expect polite service if you have not decided on your choice when it's your turn to be served. Let's all get real for a minute. It's not hard to have the best bagels in London. What is the competition? The five pack of NY Bagel in Tesco's? (P.s. way to jip us out of the standard half dozen). After all the hype I have to say I looked at my egg bagel that I purchased between beers at the nearby Carpenter's Arms and was a tad disappointed. The bagel itself was small, the diameter of a coffee mug, and the egg was simply boiled and sliced - and that's it. It was pre-assembled and grabbed out of several trays stacked with similar sandwiches (your options being cheese or no cheese), so it's not warm, but room temperature. With my wingeing done, I shall now say this: it was pretty good, for being so simple. The bagels were wonderfully fresh, and after eating store-bought ones for months it truly hit me how much I had missed popping into one of many bakeries back home and getting a bagel that had been made mere hours before being consumed. And you must truly appreciate any where in London that is 1. open 24 hours and 2. doesn't gouge you on price. £2 for this? Alright. Also, any place where you find yourself stuffing your face while standing on the sidewalk with drunken strangers feels endearing. Like you're all sharing this great moment of satiation, then you stroll off home or back to the bar, and hopefully you had the good sense to get a jelly-filled donut for the walk. read more

Iam not really a bagel fan, but i was glad to see that they do other options. So I decided to by a sausage roll only to find that it was too greasy and the sausage just tasted different, and Iam a girl who like my sausage and that was strange. I also Iam a girl with a sweet tooth so i decide to try their jam doughtnut, now that again was hard, not exactly kripy crems but it would do because i was hungry and it was late and the bagel shop was the only thing open, which is one of the good things about them. Out in the area for drinks and wanted some drinking food. Had never tried the famous salt beef and gherkin sandwich (with mustard of course) so face it a whirl. The insides were delicious- a generous portion of salt beef covered in mustard. Each bite crunched with the large pickle pieces. Really tasty and I almost went back to order another because one did not quite satisfy my hunger like a kebab does. However I refrained. The only thing lacking was the bagel. (My wife just got a bagel and cream cheese so I feel for her). It just wasn't a New York bagel. That's all. I heard about this golden fleece on a blog talking about the best late night eats in London; after such a tantalising description and raving reviews, I bookmarked it and promised myself to visit. Well yesterday was that day. This place is truly fantastic. Fresh AND fast, as well as mind blowingly cheap. They cook bagels there (funny that) so they're super fresh and the smell envelops you as you walk in. You can choose a variety of fillings but I immediately beelined for their infamous beef and by Jove was it good. Firstly I just want to delineate how rapid their service is. I queued, ordered and was served in under 5 minutes. Tchyeah, I know right? On top of that, they stuffed so much succulent beef in that bad boy that I almost struggled to fit it in my mouth. All this for under a fiver. Heck it wasn't even four quid. Their bagels are amazing, the beef unreal and the price criminal. Speed of service was also unbelievable. Not a fan. In comparing Bagel Shop and Bagel Bake over the past two days. I read all the 5* 'this place is amazing' reviews so I thought j would leave Bagel Shop and try Bagel Bake and compare their 'Cream Cheese and Salmon Bagel.' I found the service Ruder than Bagel Shop. The woman just looked at me like I was a rat off the street and did say a word until giving my change which was 'NEXT'. Then the bagel itself.... At least Bagel Shop make your bagel as you order and it's not been premade. This gives leeway for Bagel shop to ask such questions as 'lemon and pepper?' Or 'anything else on top?' Instead my premade bagel was shoved in a bag and handed to me, lacking cream cheese for my liking. I'm not to go on be uses it's silly. A bagels a Bagel, but I'll be going to Bagel Shop from now on I think. The prices are the same and I wouldn't be surprised if they're run by the same people. read more

So I wrote a lengthy review only for my fat sausage finger to press back and loose the hole bloody thing. Round 2 *ding ding ding ding* OK firstly, this place is DEFINITELY A MUST! I would've given it 5 starts but unfortunately my bagel was a tad burnt. And by burnt, to me I think a bagel should be a nice shade of golden brown. Mine on the other hand was a very very dark shade of brown. Aside from it being somewhat burnt it was soft and wasn't dry in any kind of way. Moving on. I literally wanted to eat this alone and dash the bagel away. The salt beef which wasn't too salty in my eyes but then again I do love a bit of salt so I'm probably the wrong person to ask. Well it was only what I can describe as bloody divine. So succulent, so moist, so tender. There wasn't a moment where I had to fight it with my teeth. One thing I will say is it would be nice if they smiled a bit like gosh even McDonald's workers give you a fake smile. Other than that like I said it's definitely worth a try. read more

Jeez, I didn't think writing a review about a place I like would be that difficult but it is. Beigel Bake is unpretentious, working class and open all hours. There are problems with this place; the cakes and sausage rolls are hit-and-miss and they always overdo the butter or cream cheese on prepared beigels for my tastes. However, I don't think you can challenge the quality of the beigel. It is really a top-quality beigel and it costs bugger all. Never been a fan of salt beef so can't recommend it but I love some smoked salmon, no butter when buying enough beigels to feed my extended family. It's a cherished memory of mine that the last thing I gave to my aunt before she died was some beigels and she was so very happy with them. Seriously, if I'm within 3 miles of the place I must go there. NOTE: For our North American cousins - Bagels are not served here, these are beigels. When warm, they are chewy like a hot pretzel. When they cool down, they go harder and coarser than you are used to. It's like comparing one of those sweet Montreal bagels to a savoury New York bagel. At 3am we stumbled into this joint after some drinking and were craving the classic egg and cheese bagel sandwich...being Jersey folks, what we expected was not what we got, but still kind of an interesting surprise. The English version of an egg and cheese on a bagel is a cold slice of cheese and a sliced hard boiled egg, instead of the hot, gooey glory of the motherland. Still good, no regrets. Just got back from Beigel Bake. I've eaten a lot of bagel sandwiches in my time and I must say that the salted beef bagel is completely awesome. The meat was tender and tasty, the bagel was fresh (although a bit different than what would be considered "traditional" bagels) and the price was right (£3.40). There's nowhere to sit, so be prepared to eat on the go. Also, you'll likely notice that the line wraps around and goes out the door, but don't let that stop you. The folks who work there keep the line moving fast (but are still polite in the process), so even if you have 20 people in front of you, you'll still be in and out in about 10 minutes. They also have pastries which looked delicious (didn't grab any, since the bagel was going to be enough for me). Very happy we made the walk from Spitalfield's Market to try this place out! read more

Well it's been a few years but........ ....... i shouldn't really review Beigel Bake as this is a nostalgic trip based on my experiences in the 80's and early 90's. The London Club Kids place of last resort after a mind bending night of repetitious music was the beigel shop with it legendary door with not lock because it never closes. The beigels may not have ever been the worlds best but this East London stalwart of working class food has managed to live through many changes and still serves up a mean salt beef on rye with english mustard that will blow your head off. One of the most welcome stalwarts of the Brick Lane scene is the Brick Lane Beigel Bake. They are the oldest bagel bakery in London and they claim to bake over 7000 bagels a night. It is a major haunt for old-timers, cabbies and trendy kids and for good reasons. There is a real sense of history and East End nostalgia when you are in there. This is helped by the incredibly low prices. Bagels start from as little as 12p, whilst filled bagels range up to about £2.00. They have a huge selection of bagel fillings and none better than the infamous hot salt beef smeared with optional mustard. I came here on a monday morning and there was practically nobody there. Got my bagel in less than two minutes! I'm just going to echo everybody here and tell you to get the Salt(ed?) beef bagel. With mustard if you can handle it, since they are pretty strong. The beef, which tasted like corned beef, was tender and flavorful, and portion was extremely generous. One thing in the beginning: if you're used to American bagels, it's hard to compare it to this one. I was walking on brick lane and asked a lady where to find a good bagel. She told me to go to the store with the big white sign and repeated like five times that it's definitely the best place. I chose a simple cream cheese bagel and a coke and was surprised about the cheap prices. Since the bagel wasn't toasted, I thought it was kind of weird but still good. Very good bagels, good value for money. The good point is that it's open 24h so you can eat for a cheap price after a party. The bad point is the service. The woman who served us barely didn't pay attention to my friend when she ordered so she didn't hear the "please" she said. So during the next 2 minutes, she was talking to her colleagues in front of us, saying stupid words like "why french people never say "please", blabla"... My friend told her she said "please" so the woman apologized. But girl, next time when you don't know, keep your mouth shut instead of saying lies. read more

I think this is better suited to late night eats. We came by on a hungover afternoon looking for a salty, beefy, cure. The line wasn't too long at 2pm, and the brusque ladies kept the queue moving quickly so we didn't have to wait long. The salt beef (basically corned beef) bagel with gherkin and mustard was good, but I learned the hard way that it was not the happy, yellow mustard it appeared to be, but the awful, spicy yellow mustard of death, so that kind of ruined my experience. A 24 hour place, you queue from inside the shop outwards, when you get to the front of the shop you are served by women, who speedily take your order, and prepare your bagel, but the queue moves quick, so be ready to order. This is a take-away, so take your hot bagel and just eat out on the street or on the ledge along the wall on the opposite side of the shop. But for under a fiver, these are good, and after a night of drinking, you could easily have two. read more

This establishment replaced Blooms kosher restaurant in nearby Whitechapel, the main differences are that Blooms was kosher, and Beigel Bake is not (neither is Beigel Shop) as they are both open on Saturday, the Jewish sabbath. They also serve meat and milk together, something which is definitely not allowed if you eat kosher. I am a bagel snob. I have to be, being from Montreal, where you can't find a better bagel than at St-Viateur's, where they are dense and malty, boiled in honey and covered in sesame or poppy seeds. These will easily crush even the best of the NewYork style (of which I have sampled extensively), which are oversized blimpy bread things, too giant too be savored and mostly tasteless to boot. I'm sorry for all the scandalized NY style bagel lovers I most certainly insulted just now, but until you make the trip to montreal to see the light, you're going to have to stew in the knowledge your NY bagels are just second rate. So. Being a bagel lover with high expectations, I had none for London. I was rather excited, then, when I came across Beigal Bake in Brick lane, established way before when, and in the process of selling large quantities of low-priced bagels to a giant queue of folk at all hours without any pomp or pretension. This could be the real thing! Well, there isn't a giant fire-breathing wood oven roaring in the background, but I have to say these little guys are pretty good. Smaller then even Montreal style and half a NY style, they aren't covered in seeds and are not boiled in honey. But the texture is very nice, light slightly crisp skin exterior that gives way to a chewy and dense interior, that is like warm goo when fresh baked or toasted. It has a light malt taste. I can put all manner of stuff in these and enjoy them anytime, being perfect for buying in bulk at 25p a pop. I didn't go for any of their time-tested sandwich favorites such as salt beef or salmon and cream cheese (I walked away with two dozen plains in proper paper bags so they could breathe), but they all looked good at great prices. I'm a little tipsy. It's Halloween, don't judge. I just bought 2 beagles from here. No, no, autocorrect: BEIGELS. NOT BEAGLES. 25 p each. They were hot, and had a sweet top to them, and I had had a big dinner and meant to buy one to leave outside my friend's door but WHADDAYAKNOW they are now both gone. So that says something. I also like their onion bun things (NOT THE WORD THEY USE) but not as much as their BEIGELS. They do have onion and poppy seed on them, though. I never get them with anything on them, except very occasionally when I just go for cream cheese. No smoked salmon, no salted beef. Once, only once, tuna mayo. Just get 'em. Hot, fresh, beagles. It's decent, don't get me wrong. But it's far from perfect. Since they don't toast, you're basically eating a chewy roll.
