One of my best dining experiences in London and the cheapest by far, Beigel Bake is worth a visit. It's so true what they said about London and the high food prices, mostly because the American dollar gets killed on the conversion rate for the British pound. On the recommendation of our tour guide, my girlfriend and I walked from Liverpool Street station which was an adventure all its own. You go from the yuppie financial/business district to a very hipster-esque part of London in less than 10 minutes. The exterior was very modest (the sort of hole-in-the-wall I'm always looking out for) and the menu straightforward. If you're walking all the way here, you have to order the hot salt beef beigel with pickles and mustard. The beef is a reddish hue of delicious taste, juicy but far from greasy. What really pulls the whole thing together is the actual beigel bread itself, which tasted a lot lighter than American beigel and just as good (I would say better) with its warm, chewy, and surprisingly sweet interior. So how does it compare to next door rival Beigel Shop? After having them back-to-back (what? I was only in London for a few days), I'm going to give the edge to Beigel Bake by the slimmest of margins, only because I liked the beigels here a little bit more (I think they're a bit sweeter). For me and most people, the white signed Beigel Bake is the true place to get a bagel. I never know which way to spell it but 'bagel' is how I would. I digress. I pretty much only get two items on the menu apart from experimenting with a cake or a random filling, but the Salt Beef bagel is jam packed with meat. I think no salt beef bagel is complete with asking for a gherkin and mustard so make sure you do for the complete experience. They really do pack it all inside. The other bagel I get is the salmon and cream cheese which is an absolute snip at £1.60 (May - 2015). I can't go there without getting at least two bagels whether that is for lunch, in passing, or of course what most people do since this is one of few places in London that is 24 HOURS (thank the lord especially with 24 hour tubes coming up on weekends here) and on the way back home from the pub. It really is an institution on a road that is itself famous; Brick Lane. Just had one last night and the quality is consistent and the staff always chirpy. Keep up the good work. :) read more

A hot salt beef beigel. 6 years later, it remains the best salt beef I've ever had the pleasure of eating and so yesterday, as Kirsty and I were in London and headed to Bricklane to wander the markets it was too good an opportunity to miss. Join the queue (it's open 24hours but I've only ever been a peak times), and leave with a fresh beigel, crammed full of delicious, tender, salt beef and mustard (we didn't get the pickle but that isn't important). So this is a cool place, even though I'm giving it 3 stars I would definitely recommend people giving it a go especially if you are hungry at a late hour they are open 24 hours! It's a bit like the Soup Nazi place from Seinfeld but not that bad. Meaning that you have a long queue of people with very efficient and nice staff that expect you to make a quick decision, order up pay up (only cash) and go. Food wise, since it's more of a fast moving queue place the bagels are not always fresh and they make some of them in advance so depends on the hour of the day it may sit there for a while. They also have other option like a very mushy and weird sausage roll that was tasty. The best thing to get there in my opinion is the salted beef bagel which is one that they assemble on the spot and make there. That's a huge piece of beef in a bagel with some pickles and it's glorious so if you are there try it! I also went for the NY classic but i've had better ones. Wow! Visited here for some late night munchies while I was on holiday in London with some friends. A couple of locals recommended it and it was amazing! After waiting in the long line which actually moved along very quickly, I got the hot sale beef beige with mustard and pickles. Wow. So as a good Jewish girl with a penchant for doughy, holey bread I can safely say that I adore both beigel shops on Brick Lane, located just a hop, skip and totter away from one another. There isn't too much to differentiate the two aside from their shop front sign colours, hence I call this one the 'white beigel shop' and the 'yellow beigel shop'. It's a well-thought out, clever concept I know. This one, however, is a tad inferior as the beigels are 10 pence more expensive than t'other, and they once gave me marginally less cream cheese than their neighbouring competitor, but I'm just being pedantic you could say. However, this flaw was fully redeemed with their deliciously fresh and totally orgasmic super size challa (essentially golden egg bread) which is used for a Friday night Shabbat dinner, and is excellent for soothing familial rifts and petty arguments (here speaks the voice of experience).
