He has been cooking professionally since the 1970s, and now he owns the Lake Geneva School of Cooking, and teaches hands-on classes for groups and corporate events. I visited with a group of nine people, and we all had a great time. Chef John and his assistants greeted us with a mimosa, and then explained what we'd be doing: help to create a three-course lunch for everyone. Our lunch consisted of a mushroom soup, a beet salad and a baked cinnamon apple topped with ice cream for dessert. Chef John is very much a believer in cooking with the seasons, so the menu will change depending on when you visit. He gets a lot of his produce from the local Lake Geneva farmers market, and other food items from local merchants. Our group split up and tackled one aspect of the meal. I was with the mushroom soup group, and for the most part, the soup was prepared, we just had to put the finishing touches on it and make some cheese croutons to go on top. I would have loved to do a little more of the prep work and cooking, to be honest. But not everyone in my group was as comfortable with cooking as I was. That's the thing with these classes, though: Whether you have a lot of experience with cooking or a little, the classes are informative and approachable, and focus on fun and food. The kitchen that we worked in was well equipped and clean, with lots of room to move around. The kitchen assistants were college kids who were culinary students, which was cool. After we prepared our meal, we all sat down and enjoyed it in the big dining room. Each course was paired with wine. And the best part: The food was delicious! Yay, us! The meal, served buffet-style, included a salad of seasonal mixed greens, rolls, mashed potatoes, mostaciolli sautéed in olive oil & garlic, chicken piccata, roasted vegetables (served cold), and chef-carved roast sirloin. Plated brownies were brought out for dessert. As far as banquet hall food goes, the quality was exceptional. The entertainer on this day, John Ludy Puleo, is a gifted vocalist who emulates the styles of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tom Jones, Bobby Darin, and other Las Vegas greats of the '50s-'80s. Following lunch, his nostalgic 90-minute show delighted the audience. I was underwhelmed by the service at this event. If you wanted a beverage other than water, you had to go and get it yourself. When I pointed out a soiled half-filled water glass to a server, he actually picked it up, examined it, gave me a ridiculous "explanation," and set it back down on the table! The guy carving the sirloin whittled off a tiny piece; when I asked for more, he made a face. Finally, it seemed rather odd that the restroom doors were propped wide open the entire time.

Employee mentioned it was an error due to the third party reservation site, except the MOH spoke directly with an employee at Baker House (even gave her card number) since our group was too big to book on the other site. We later heard an employee mention a similar incident happened a couple weeks prior. The employees we spoke to were accommodating and said we would still be seated but the food might come out a tad later since they didn't prepare for us. They mentioned giving a discount for the trouble but that did not happen when the bill came. There was also a $16 admin fee. When we asked our server, she said 'I don't deal with fees' and had no idea what it was for. She then asked someone and was told it was the fee to 'run the card' but I have not come across that high of a fee anywhere else. I probably would have rated this 2 stars instead but the tea was quite good. So I bumped it to 3.
