Beautiful yarn and very friendly people. I had a nice chat and couldn't decide on what color way/combination in Fleece Artist BFL 2/8. Since we would be in town for a few days, I needed to do a Ravelry search. I came back on Friday before we caught our ferry. I didn't see the navy blue with green colorway. Of course, I didn't remember the name... I came to the register with my second choice. Luckily, I asked if they had any more in a blue/green color combo...Eureka! They had the Spruce colorway in backstock! read more

Omg, I love this place. It is now one of my favorite yarn shops. I do live in Columbus, Ohio, but my family makes the trek to Victoria at least once a year. I was so happy to find this place not too far off from some of the other places we like to visit. Anyway, about three different people in the shop helped me; it was so nice. One lady took me around to all the local dyers, another lady looked up one of my saved Ravelry patterns so we could make sure I was getting the right weight and yardage, and a third man helped me at the checkout and helped me pick out a bag and gave me a full punch card (I spent a lot oops). The LYS is right off a main street, and it takes up the corner of an old building; you can't miss it! (I also love house plants, and our last trip to Victoria I was trying to convince my husband to let me bring a plant home with us. Bringing home yarn is MUCH easier and I got much less pushback from him, haha.) read more

Forgot my extra long circular needles on a recent trip to BC so I visited Beehive to pick up what I needed. It was super exciting to visit a new-to-me yarn store. I walked to the back counter where the needles were and was greeted by the staff person there. She seemed nice enough at first until I said what I needed (EXACTLY what I needed, "2.75mm 60" long, circular needles"). First she offered me the "cheap and easy" (her words) birch needles in 32". I said I needed longer and preferred steel since I tend to snap the smaller gauge ones when working large projects. She rolled her eyes at me and went to the steel section asking me what I was making and again tried to give me 32" needles when I told her it was a sweater. I said 60" is what I prefer and I won't go below 47" (I knit using magic loop a lot plus this project ends up with several hundred stitches on the needles at once). Well she proceeded to tell me that long needles "won't work" for my project and I should never use more than 32" for someone of my size...bear in mind she has no clue of what my project looks like or how it's constructed or how I knit (and I shouldn't have to explain myself to anyone. Nobody else's business). She continued on in a semi passive aggressive tone as if I have no clue what I'm doing. She really talked down to me (we are both clearly middle aged so it wasn't an ageist thing, she's just rude). Anyway it was pretty shocking to have this officious, unhelpful tone and had I not needed the needles ASAP I would have walked out. Too bad because I was looking forward to some preemptive shopping for my next project. In the end my husband and I had a good laugh about it because he'd planned to pretty much lose me for a good hour or more in the yarn shop as well as suffer a serious wallet biopsy but as it turned out "Officious Lady" pissed me off so much that I just bought the needles and left. We decided that I'd probably just met the only nasty person in Canada - so glad to have THAT done with LOL. I still regret that I spent a dime in there but was glad to get my project going. Anyway that staff person should get a clue that if someone walks in and tells you exactly what they want maybe they know what they are doing and you should back off on being such a officious prat and maybe even take a course in customer service. read more

Very knowledgeable and friendly! I was looking for "local" yarns and Beehive Wool had just what I was looking for!

I went looking for this shop specifically on a recent trip to Victoria with my husband. I like finding fibers that are made and dyed in the country I'm visiting and walking from the downtown Marriott was not difficult. The ladies in the store were friendly, knowledgeable, and able to find just what I was looking for. For locals, their selection is excellent and the prices seem to be reasonable for the quality they offer! I'm looking forward to my next trip to Victoria and plan to stop in again! read more

I absolutely loved my first visit to the Beehive wool shop. I am always on the hunt for yarn stores whenever I visit other cities and this one did not disappoint. As I approached the old brick heritage building, I was delighted by the window displays and positively giddy about the size of the store. I was warmly greeted by a project-toting lady who was happy to show me around, knitting all the while. How charming! She spoke highly about a few local fibre artists that I had never heard of and I would have purchased a couple skeins if they had the color I was after. We spoke a bit about her job and she genuinely felt like it wasn't work because she was able to do what she loves every day. If that weren't enough, I caught her soothing a crying baby in a carrier while the mother was checking out some items. Melt! Once I picked out my yarn and purchased, another young lady offered to wind the skeins for me. While the machine was running, she offered their computer so I could look up shawl patterns suggested for the yarn I purchased. Overall my experience was wonderful - I will be back when I visit Victoria! The only surprise I encountered was a few missing brands or a lack of colors for some of my favourites (ie: koigu). However, there was quite a mix of different items I hadn't seen before. It would be nice to see more knitted items or swatches in the store as well. Thanks for the tour, ladies! read more

Had a nice interaction with the First Lady that helped us but Carol at the register gave us so much sarcasm we left without purchasing. Almost bought a 100 dollars worth of yarn but the mean carol screwed up the sale! read more

I like this place and they have lots of variety for a beginner like me. I agree that the staff hover. read more

I had a good laugh at this shop. I went at 10 (so not at noon when they are HANGRY and not at closing when they want to go home). I asked if they had flat shaft crochet hooks and the attended said, she had never heard of such thing, that this type of hook must be handmade! LOL If she got out of her shop from time to time, she would find a whole world of crochet hooks that are different from the standard variety they carry.... She was not exactly rude, but not exactly pleasant. I offered to Google the hook I was referring to and show it to her... She turned away. I went to their competitors on View Street and lo and behold, flat shaft hooks from Clover in stock! In all kinds of sizes too... :-) I roamed around the store (Beehive) and found myself followed by one of the clerks... Not sure she was trying to be helpful (did not ask me if she could help) or watchful (we crocheters are suspicious type people...) LOL Anyway, I bought 2 skeins of lovely alpaca. Well priced. Lovely and soft. Would I go back? Probably not. I live in Ottawa and do not find myself in Victoria often. But even if I did, I am not interested in being treated like that. I think this type of service is what make the anonymous Internet so appealing for shopping: no attitude, no fuss, just the straight goods! Sylvia read more

We walked two miles from the ship to revisit this. Posted hours were 11-4 on Sunday and they were closed!!!

I was on a cruise and had looked up yarn shops in the ports we were stopping in. This one sure didn't disappoint! They had a wonderful selection of yarn at all kinds of prices. The staff was very helpful and friendly. I hope I am able to go back someday. read more

I visit the shop every time I visit Victoria and I buy beautiful yarns. People here are wonderful. However, the price markup for tools seems to be high for my standard. I bought a beautiful set of Knitter's Pride Interchangeable Needle set for CAD 199 (about $150). It was the first time I saw them in person, and I decided to buy them there (even though I could order from Amazon) because I appreciate the fact that I was able to see the needles and I also appreciate the people who helped me there. I was OK paying more for the in-person service and thus I didn't even bother to ask about the price. I was thinking there could be a 10-20 dollar difference that it would not be a problem... Then I realized that the same set is only USD99.99 on Amazon (with free shipping, of course). I totally get the whole thing about supporting local businesses and I have no problem paying a bit more. But the price difference is a bit too much for me and for shoppers who care about the price, it would be a good idea to check the price. I will continue to buy yarn and to support the shop but I would be more careful with checking the price. read more

Very unimpressed with the Beehive today. I went in hoping to have 2 Skeins of beautiful Rasta Malbrigio balled and was informed that it wasn't a service they provided unless I bought the wool from them. When I offered to pay to have it done or simply do it myself the girl again said no. I told her that was a bit absurd, and she offered to ask someone else what they could do. Then a lady, who I assume was a manager, told me that no, they would not help me because it is a service they only provide for customers, which I AM! I purchased needles and a button there just the day before! I left and went to the Button Boutique in Trounce Alley and they happily balled my fibres without hesitation. Thanks for nothing Beehive. Methinks I shan't be returning. read more

I love this place. The staff is so friendly and encouraging. Huge selection. I could spend hours here.
