We needed to find somewhere to eat close to the ferry terminal as we didn't have s great deal of…read moretime until we had to catch the ferry ! The Gatehouse grill is right outside the terminal which was a good start , we explained to the waiter that we were short on time and he found us a table straight away ,he took our order which was chicken stuffed with ricotta and spinach, roasted vegetables and a tomato based sauce. The restaurant has a welcoming and smart feel , the staff are very knowledgeable about the menu and extremely attentive. The food arrived and it did not disappoint ,it was delicious ! It was a great experience and I would highly recommend the Gatehouse Grill!

My boyfriend and I went here for an anniversary meal after lots of searching for a decent place to…read morego that was within our budget and I'm so glad we ended up at the Gatehouse Grill! It's situated about the Royal Thai restaurant so have to enter the Thai restaurant, turning left and go upstairs to get to the steakhouse. Its nicely decorated and the tables are well-spaced. There's also a nice bar area with a glass floor which is really interesting! There's a large outdoor area overlooking the bay which would be great in the summer. We ordered the deep fried brie to start (and share) and it was really well done. We obviously both ordered steaks for our mains - we got one sirloin and one fillet - both cooked rare. They were great steaks and cooked to perfection. It was also just the right size for one person and it was very filling. We also ordered some side dishes - we both particularly liked the Parmesan, black truffle oil fries which were absolutely delicious! I'd go back just for them! We had the cheese board for desert and it didn't disappoint though as always, i would have liked more cheese. We paired this with a nice glass of port from their selection of 3/4. The wine is reasonably priced and the service was brilliant. The staff were attentive and knowledgable and very courteous; they even ordered us a taxi for when we were ready to leave. I really liked this restuarnat and I can't wait to visit it again.

Very nice gastro pub in the centre of Winchester. Very welcoming and griendhout staff!…read moreGreat food, we had the lovely artisan bread, great crab cake and a very jummie steak with a glass of Malbec. The pub is nicely decorated, pub style, country style, but still modern.

My friend and I walked through the Winchester city centre looking for a place to have dinner, and…read morewe couldn't have gotten luckier when we chose No 5 Bridge Street. What a delight! Apparently the restaurant has been newly redone, and the interior is very cozy and inviting. My friend and I split some wonderful fishcakes for an appetizer, then I got one of the specials - Merguez sausages with beans and grilled baby gem lettuce. Sounded so simple, but it was really outstanding. So much flavor, so filling yet so light and fresh, and a really affordable price. I was quite pleased with myself for ordering it!! I asked for a side of rose harissa (!!) which was a beautiful, floral but spicy accompaniment. All of their sauces sounded incredible (broad bean and mint pesto, saffron aioli, etc). The blackberry brûlée with elderflower sorbet at the end was the perfect finish. This is one of those farm-to-table restaurants that support local charities, and you'd do well to spend your money here. The friendly service and inviting atmosphere only added to our experience. Highly recommended to anybody staying in Winchester!

On our recent trip to London, four of us went to the Steak Restaurant, on the recommendation of…read moresomeone recently relocated from California. I mention this because we have some amazing steak restaurants in SoCal. The restaurant had several families dining, and had a nice level of background chatter. Our chef took the time to come speak with us, recommend cuts of beef and generally go over our options. This was a lovely surprise as this rarely happens. We started with "fall off the bone" ribs and the Hallumi - (squeaky cheese - wish I could find this here in SoCal... if anyone reading this knows a place... please let me know!) We ordered rib eye steaks, I had the filet... with sides of creamed spinach/truffle fries and Mac and cheese. Everything was cooked to our liking, and the chef came back out to check on us. We actually ended up going back again just because the food and service were great. Look forward to visiting again! (Oooh... if you go, ask for their salts.. I liked the Merlot infused one)
