Very clean place, seating is well organized. We ordered Portuguese chicken, short rib, and inferno burger - All three items were amazing. The chicken is very similar to nandos and perri perri. The burger was juicy, and soft. The short rib just melted in our mouth. This is a must stop if you're in the area. Very quick service, gentlemen greeted us with a menu, explained the options. I feel really sad. Sad that I haven't gone here sooner! It's in the small plaza before you turn off Young John and head towards the Freedom Middle and High Schools. The food was AMAZING (focusing on the Indian half of the menu, they do Portuguese grilled food as well). I was pretty tame with my food choices...it's been awhile since I've had curried anything and was resisting my infamous habit of ordering two days of meals in one go when I find an Indian restaurant. I had a mango lassi, garlic naan, appetizer samosas, and chicken tikka masala (they can make it spicy although if you want real spice I always lean on a vindaloo). Everything came out piping hot and in hearty portions. Service was great. I know we were really hungry when we got there so I'm grateful for their service for sure. Prices are very fair for the portions. Cannot confirm is the food is Halaal so please check but they do offer a good variety of paneer and vegetable centric dishes as well. read more

I work at Trustco Bank, right next door to Charcoal Zyka off of John Young parkway. Since I travel a lot, I end up working over here every so often. If you know this area, the options for food are limited, and I prefer to spend my break time relaxing as opposed to driving on the highway. That being said I was bound to try the fare here eventually. Honestly it took me so long because people kept telling me it wasn't worth trying (they were wrong!). So, in the spirit of typical Alexandria, I was unpersuaded by the masses and gave the establishment a chance. Side note: I forgot to add that Indian is my go-to all time favorite. The spicier the curry the better! I'll be frank; Charcoal Zyka isn't the most authentic place. However, it's extremely delicious and reasonably priced. The samosas are out of this world good. Fluffy, carby, and always hot. I highly recommend them as a starter with any curry dish of your choosing (but I'd do the butter chicken if I were ordering). For the price and for the quality of the food, Charcoal Zyka is a 4 out of 5. The atmosphere needs improvement and the service is a tad slow, but this isn't a gourmet establishment. I stopped by for lunch to go one afternoon. The place is on John Young Parkway just south of the 528 in a little strip center. The restaurant is fairly small with some booths, tables, TVs and a counter/grill area. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich with a side of plantains. My chicken sandwich had a decent flavor but was dry and a bit overcooked. It came with BBQ sauce which was good and helped the sandwich out tremendously. The plantains were good, plump and juicy without being greasy. The food was OK, but I thought it was a bit pricey. My sandwich was $6.99 and the side of plantains was an additional $3. There were only 5 plantains! Although I did take my food to go, the service I got while there was just pleasant enough but they definitely didn't go out of their way to be friendly. I did notice that they serve beer and have live music occasionally. Maybe it is livelier then? I was the only one there and expected an independent restaurant like that to be a bit more hospitable. 4 stars for an array of options, flavorful food, at a reasonable price. I stumbled on this place while browsing through Yelp. I noticed they had Indian food but they offered Portuguese BBQ chicken. Well I just happen to be Portuguese and figured let's give it a shot. My wife likes Indian food so we can kill 2 birds with one stone. We started with Samosas and they were phenomenal. I'll also mention the restaurant had just opened and we went in expecting to wait for our food. Unlike other restaurants I've been to, they were ready upon opening time. Not just turning on the grill. I got the Portuguese BBQ chicken and was thoroughly impressed. Is it the same flavor you get walking down the streets of Lisbon? No but it's pretty damn close. There are other "authentic" Portuguese restaurants in the area that offer this same dish, but you can clearly tell they don't use a charcoal grill. A key ingredient in making this chicken is the charcoal pit or grill. That's the authentic part. Charcoal Zyka lived up to its name and the chicken really did taste like it was properly grilled. The seasoning and the sauce are on point and this dish, for 10 bucks, gives you half a chicken and a side. Typically we eat this dish with French fries and rice. Don't expect quick service. The restaurant wasn't busy either. I think the servers are new because they are pretty forgetful and inattentive. I had to ask on my mom's Chai tea. I felt their portion sizes are barely enough, except for the shrimp biriyani. I ordered the lamb vindaloo and it was mostly large bones. I've been to other Indian restaurants and although I don't expect a doggy bag, at least I leave feeling satisfied. I read other reviews where their Portuguese chicken is good. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE DISABLED OR HAVE A BABY. I was there once ordered a drink and used the restroom. When I returned I was treated with the utmost discourtesy and disrespect for throwing bathroom trash I in the trash. And was told by doing so I made toilet unusable. Being disabled, this is not anything I am able to control, and to be treated like that by a MANAGER is unheard of. His claim was because I used the restroom before purchasing a drink I was not a customer. IDK how they qualify that. I paid money in exchange for a service. This is why I LOVE Yelp! We found this little gem while searching through Yelp and figured we would try it. It was the perfect place for my husband and I, he loves his Portuguese chicken and I love Indian food (which he doesn't), so to be able to get both in one restaurant was a huge win win for us :) The place is located in a little strip mall and didn't have much going on with regards to the ambiance and decor of the place, but this is one of those places that you come for the food not the ambiance. They served 2 huge samosas for $2.50 that had huge amounts of flavors inside a beautifully served flaky, crusty dough encasing. Highly recommend this as starters! I then ordered the shrimp korma and my husband of course got his Portuguese chicken. The Portuguese chicken was extremely tasty, they did a great job of char-coaling the meat and allowing it to have that smoky flavor with the combinations of great spices and hot sauce. The shrimp korma was pretty good and for $9.99 a good price. I ordered a mild, but next time would get the next level of spiciness, because I feel like it was lacking in the spice department, but I believe that is my fault for ordering it mild. I also got a mango lassi, which is a delicious refreshing Indian drink that is yogurt based. It is not that sweet but perfect when combating spicy food. They gave us tap water with no ice, it warm enough to take a shower with. Then the first part of the order came after 20 min. It was a kids burger. The rest of the food never made it to the table because I waited another 15 min for my other kids plate and then just decided to cancel the rest of the order and leave. If you love Indian food, this is the place. I found the reviews on yelp and decided to come on over since I work close by when I am in the office. WOW. I ordered the Chicken Tikka Masala and it was AMAZING. I asked for naan to go with it and dunk into the sauce, and it came to my table, warm and delicious. Unfortunately, the sauce was SO SPICY that it was hard to eat at times. I ordered it medium and would definitely get it mild next time. I was gulping down water since it was painfully spicy for me. My only issue was that the service was really poor. I sat outside with a friend and the server barely came out, which was a problem considering my issue of needing to gulp down water with the food.
