Beach River Mill made a full set of shutters a couple years ago For our historic colonial home. 15 pairs of shutters in Salem, MA, a big job. Shutters painted black with black coated hardware. Shortly after install the hardware / hinges rusted. Beach River Moll acknowledged the defect and had the manufacturer mail us new hinges Right away. Beach River said it was a painting defect with the company they use to source their hardware. We asked Beach River to replace the defective rusty hardware which involves removing and setting each shutter pair on a ladder. They first told us to hire a company do doing which we did not think was fair. They then indicated they would set up an appointment next month, then next season. The season came and went and now they will not return emails. We have to hire someone now to do this work that was jog our fault because they have opted to ignore us instead of ensuring their product looks good, which should be a win win for both of us. I chose Beech River Mill because their quote was in the range of the other shutter companies I found but what convinced me was that they were extremely knowledgeable over the phone and clearly understood the many ways in which a good superior shutter (and the hardware) is constructed. Even though they do a lot of large projects, they were willing to take on a residential job for a single house. I talked to Randy about the details and he came out and took a look; I originally thought I would only replace the ones that were falling apart but he politely advised me to replace the whole set. He wasn't pushy, he was just convincing. They did the install today and it looks absolutely great. The shutters are clearly high quality in look and materials. I had a very baffling and disappointing experience with this company, in particular with a gentleman named Randy, who I believe is a member of the family who owns Beech River Mill. I sought out Beech River Mill after seeing their work on a building near me and wanted to pursue getting a bid for shutters on our brownstone. When Randy stopped by to take measurements, I asked him for a "ballpark" price per window (we have 8 windows). Given that Beech River Mill has installed shutters on a number of buildings in Boston, I assumed he had a pretty good idea of the cost for a typical brownstone. He gave me the pricing of $800-$1,000 per window for each pair of shutters, or roughly $6,400 to $8,000. I actually thought it would have been more and told him this, which was ultimately my mistake, but was pleasantly surprised they were going to be in the price range he gave me. Four windows were different sizes so I figured the shutter price for the larger windows would be higher for those but the remainder, which were all the same dimensions, would be identically priced. So, when the bid came in, he priced each window at $1,875.00, or a total of $15,000.00! Needless to say, I gulped and then called him to ask why the pricing was so far off compared to his ballpark pricing. He was evasive and almost seemed irritated that I was asking questions. I attempted to follow up via email and called numerous times to get a better explanation as to why the pricing was so far off the estimated price and didn't even receive the courtesy of a timely reply. Finally, he emailed me to say that he had "critical mass issues in the shop, which required his attention". He then went on to say that he was in receipt of my follow ups, but after reviewing the project with the Beech River Mill Management team, they had decided not to pursue our project any further. No reason was given after asking again as to why we were "blackballed". I find that to be completely unacceptable and deceitful. He was either trying to pull one over on me or became embarrassed because he knew he was price gauging and therefore, decided to place the blame on the "leadership team" for not taking on the project. The entire situation left such a bad taste in my mouth, it would be hard to ever recommend this company, based solely on my interaction with Randy. If someone from Beech River Mill reads this post, I would have been pleased to buy your product but Randy needs a little coaching on the definition of customer service and honesty. I feel he took advantage of me, which doesn't sit well at all. read more
