Our beloved dog passed away recently, we found out he had lung cancer after an x-ray done at a different surgery and he died a day later. Before that we went to St Francis 5 times in 10 days paid £275 in total (which I don't care at all), ended up with unnecessary pancreatitis treatment for the first week then found out it's not it, when a blood test is done a week later. Then a generic steroid treatment started which was luckily also helpful with his condition. He wasn't be able to breathe or walk properly which I've mentioned every time. Finally an x-ray was scheduled which he didn't live to see. That would be 16th day of our first visit there after his initial symptoms. I'm not saying they've caused this or his condition may be cured. But we could at least spend more quality time with our dog and spoil him with treats on his final days if we knew what he had earlier with a simple x-ray.

What your dog/cat/hamster etc. expect is a cruel 5 minutes in the waiting room with other terrified animals, a stranger who touches them like no owner would touch them, an occasional treat from that stranger and then a really quick and easy way out. The St Francis clinic offers you and your pet just that. I've heard about this place long before I actually visited it with my scary looking but soft like butter English Bullterrier, Liza. At least three friends PLUS my landlord suggested it as the best vet in town. The location is very central and easy to acces/find. The reception is small but the warm welcome is never missing. In the waiting area you can find the usual petfood packages, pet toys hanging from the wall and information leaflets about treatments, insurance and other useful stuff if you're an owner. We had an appointment, so the waiting was really short, about 5 minutes. Making an appointment was really easy via the phone, no unnecessary questions about my uncle's history with turtle diseases. The doctor we met with was really relaxed which is always important for doggies like Liza, who basically shits themselves on the way to the vet because somehow with somekind of sixth sense they know we're going there even before the owner does. Anyways, the doctor was really helpful and explained a lot, which I think is the least they can do since the consultation fees are way too high (think about 30-35 pounds every visit just for talking with a vet, and it's not just St Francis, other places are even more expensive!). The only thing he might have to consider improving is the actual syrange movement. I mean if you stare the mighty bullterrier/aligator in the eye, show them the syrange and try and stab them in the neck.. well, don't be surprised if the mighty bullterrier will show her teeth with a loud growl and you'll be jumping up on a ceiling trying to avoid the forced amputation of your arm. But to stay serious, I think a subtle, shot is workable too, I had vets before giving shots to my dog that I didn't even notice, not to mention the dog. Fortunately the shot was eventually given and arms stayed intact with their owners, the second try was near perfect. I can't remember much after the consultation since my dog was pulling me rather hard, she just wanted a quick way out. But I do know that this clinic is hard to beat in honesty, the amount of information given, the knowledge of the docs or the friendly atmosphere of the place. So do go there if you have to because they are taking the time to explain everything and anything to you and your dog will get his/her occasional treat as well.

Never was the suggestion made that as it was only a hen why not put her down, she was treated as though she was an expensive pedigree. Grove Lodge have neutered, vaccinated and fixed them up when they've got themselves into trouble!! At all times the veterinarians have showed real care and compassion. Twice we have really needed them and they were so lovely both times. One morning we came down to find one of our boys in shock on the lounge floor, on a bank holiday weekend no less!! Grove Lodge saw us within half an hour and immediately took him in for x-rays etc. The results were sent to a kitten consultant in west sussex, as they wanted an expert opinion (something to do with bone formation), and he called us a few hours later to let us know he fractured his pelvis. They were honestly so kind and took the time to explain how to look after him when we picked him up. We were even given a little pack containing all the info plus the bits and bobs we needed. The other time wasn't quite so dramatic but we needed their emergency services (they have a 24/7 animal hospital in Worthing). I called them on a sunday morning as the other scallywag hurt his tail. They took a few details then a nurse called me back and he also sought the opinion of a doctor to rule out a broken tail over the phone...then they booked us an appointment for our local grove lodge the next day! So to sum it all up, they are all really friendly and show true kindness towards the pets and the humans too!! Excellent service, we're proud to have them as our vet.

We bought our first ever pet, a german shepherd puppy, and were panicked when we noticed a cyst between 2 of his fingers. We took him to a local vet and they spent 2 minutes looking at his paw and without even explaining or asking us, booked him for surgery the next day and injected him with painkillers and anti-biotics. Having felt that we were being taken for a ride we made an appointment with the pets practice for a second opinion. The nurses were helpful and polite, and a convenient appointment time was very easy to arrange as they open later than most vets. Our vet, Kylie, was really wonderful about everything. We told her our concerns, and she examined him, and told us professionally, but also kindly, what we did and didn't need to worry about. We also got to discuss some of our other concerns as first time pet owners, and she was very helpful. For example, she in the course of the appointment had noticed he had dry skin and that he was a slightly under weight and we may want to consider a different diet. We didn't feel pressured or guilted into doing anything, and she didn't just add things to the bill like the other vet, but I was happy that she took the initiative to notice and let us know. I think what annoyed me about the others is that they didn't respect their ethical and professional boundaries, and it was so in tune with the stories you hear about vet's being scam artists (there was an episode of panorama about it). At the end of everything she decided to prescribe a course of antibiotics, which seemed more sensible than cutting into him at the first oppurtunity like the other vet. Her manner with us and our puppy inspired our confidence in her. We did change the diet which not only adressed the skin and weight issue, but his distaste towards his food which we had noticed. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's convenient as it opens late, has parking, and is easy to get to. It's always clean and a nice environment. We decided to our dog to the puppy class was good, and it was nice to hear about advice and training directly from a vet, and it turns out that this is the only place with a vet-led training class in this area. Since then our poor puppy has a few medical issues, in each case the advice was always good, and we felt safe trusting them as we felt that they really did have our pet's best interest at heart.
