And to our surprise, they were open!! This is a really cute boutique with different clothing, accessories and fun gifts to browse through. I even found myself a cute travel bag!! They asked my friend what she had in her pocket (it was her lipgloss), implying that we were shoplifting. They did not treat the other customers this way (we are not white). They said we were "enamored" with the bracelets and told us we should have them hold it for us. Can we not shop in peace? The only kind person was a teenager doing our forever bracelets. The inventory was mostly heavily worn clothing, older furniture, and random odds and ends. We spent some time looking around but didn't find a single thing worth buying. The experience itself didn't help. There was a dog barking before we even came through the door. As we walked toward it, the dog was shut in a bathroom, and I overheard a comment suggesting it only reacted after seeing me. Since it had already been barking before I entered, that struck me as an odd and unnecessary thing to say. The front door was left wide open, and while browsing I was bitten by a flying insect inside the store. I ended up with welts afterward. I know bugs can happen anywhere, but it definitely wasn't something I expected while shopping indoors. The store also felt surprisingly loud and cramped. Between the barking dog, conversations carrying throughout the shop, and the tight layout, it wasn't a relaxing place to browse--even though we were the only customers there. What honestly surprised me most was seeing the near-perfect online ratings afterward. Everyone has different tastes, but based on my visit, I just don't understand the hype. I left empty-handed and with bug bites, which isn't exactly the thrift-store experience I was hoping for. The prices are great, and you do find some really cute things…read more What I think people don't see is that this store is in a bad part of the city, there are a lot of rude people that come in, so sometimes it's hard to keep a smile on your face. Also, there is sometimes things like masks in the fitting rooms and other trash, but I know they can't always get to that immediately when people drop it in there. It's a busy place sometimes and they're only human, it doesn't help when people are consistently in and out of the fitting rooms by themselves. Another thing people don't understand is everybody has their own personal idea of "style" and "what's hot". Your idea of something really cute might be different from what teens/young adults are actually into, and you can't really blame the employees if they pass on it. They have their own personal style too. Don't expect to drive over an hour and make hundreds of dollars, you get around $6 for a pair of jeans, a dollar or less for jewelery (depending on the item), maybe a few dollars for a top... it's a used resell store. You can't expect to make a fortune. They turn down items if they have an odor or are covered in fur because all the clothing goes directly to the floor. All they ask is you wash everything beforehand and it makes the buying process so much easier and cleaner. There's a lot of misconceptions about this place, but it's overall a solid business and they're doing their best. It's a very opinionated store when it comes to buying because you can't just force people to like the same things as you, everybody's different. I'm only giving 4 stars because it is a bunch of teenagers hired there that do occasionally give attitude, but I feel like I can't really blame them with how they are treated on a daily basis by people who come in and yell at them just because they didn't take the extra step to wash their clothes ahead of time. Call ahead if you REALLY wanna know what they're taking, and don't be disappointed if your clothes aren't totally in style to the specific person sorting through your items. The girl told me they didn't take SHEIN at any store; when half of their collection as well as the Portsmouth locations collection is all SHEIN items. The difference in prices is also INSANE. I got brand name boots in Portsmouth that retailed for $200 for $14. This Plato's is selling nasty gross dirty shoes for $60 with Amazon branding. I genuinely wouldn't waste your time or money coming to this location at all. They really pick and choose here and the staff is just not worth dealing with. I've met 15 year olds in customer service with more tact.
