I was looking for what I would consider a proper farm-shop, by which I mean only local produce, grass-fed and/or organic meat, fresh local veg, all with a view to minimum carbon footprint, minimum plastic, and support local. If this was present, which I didn't stay long enough to find out, it was very well hidden. The entrance had shelves of grapes in plastic containers and cling-film. Opposite the entrance was a shelf of fruit etc. none looked local, and much was in plastic bags. There were things like pre-cooked rice in plastic trays for microwave, a few plastic tubes of organic - but not local. Then there was a huge table of bananas, all in plastic bags. Lidl looks more like a farm-shop than this place. read more

I bought a steak and kidney pie - nearly £8 and once i had cooked it the pastry was raw despite having been pre cooked by the farm shop. The meat content was terrible - No chunks of either steak, let alone kidney. I think a cheap frozen pie out of Aldi would have been just as good. On a positive note their Extra large Cornish pasties are very good. read more

This is a breakfast review: The first thing you should know is that for someone that has never been there, its hard to find how to actually get in to the place! Breakfast is huge! 2 eggs, (cooked as you like - I chose poached; they were perfect), 2 sausages, (overcooked), 2 bacon, beans, (I asked for them to be separate), 1 piece of toast, 1 piece of fried break, sautéed potatoes and some not too good looking mushrooms. The breakfast was OK. I wasn't impressed by the sausages and taking into consideration that there was a huge farm shop attached, I expected better. The bacon was OK, too, I just expected better from a farm shop. Don't get me wrong, its not a bad breakfast, I just expected better - especially from a place where the staff have T-Shirts that state its the 'Midlands Best Breakfast'. A farm shop selling local produce, sandwiches, salads, pastas and baked goods in a rural location on the edge of Birmingham.....its just lovely really. I have been coming here since I was a child wit the family for food and stuff for the kitchen.....however yesterday's visit was for a quick takeaway lunch in the shape of a salad bowl. You can have anything you like from the sandwich board as a pasta salad or salad bowl giving you any number of healthy options here. I went for the cajun chicken and smoked cheese salad bowl with beetroot.....it was delicious. I went for the honey and mustard dressing which was also lovely but sadly not homemade. If you are not watching your waistline this place would be a day out....fresh and homemade cakes, sausage rolls, pastries, pork pies and so many other things pack the units and fridges......I have to admit I was SO tempted but after a 45 minute spin class where you can barely stand up when you get off the bike you do think twice. If you want some good locally sourse veg/produce check this palce out. its only a short drive from Maypole in south Birmingham and well worth a look. read more

Came here after doing our shopping w/the mister and dad-in-law. Since I've come to England, we're getting used to not having a Whole Foods Market and/or Sprouts around (as was the case in SD), and farm shops here are quite plentiful. I wasn't expecting very much food, because we were only after a snack (the pasties had just run out in the market - note - Saturdays are pretty busy here). I was pleasantly surprised at the size of my steak sandwich with melted cheese and caramelized onions (salad on the side) and ate it pretty quickly. The rooibos tea was great for washing everything down as well. All in all, everything was great aside from the 15-minute wait - but the food more than made up for it. FYI - there's also a little cafe tucked in between the flower shop and the restaurant. read more

I'm always undecided about Beckett's. It's one of those places that I really want to like but always leave feeling slightly deflated. I often visit because it's right on my doorstep and it's convenient when I want to grab items I've forgotten to pick up in the weekly shop or a sandwich on a weekend (usually when I've yet to do the weekly shop!). The sandwich bar is usually busy at lunch on a Saturday but there are plenty of staff on hand so the wait isn't usually too long. I would say choose your bread carefully, I don't know why but 99% of the time the wholemeal rolls are stale on one side. I always pick them in the hope 'this time they'll be nice' but sadly they're not. My other issue with this place is it isn't cheap. For a farm shop I can't understand why it's more expensive than supermarkets for all fresh produce and most meat - their kebab skewers are ridiculously overpriced. Don't go there if you're stocking up for a bbq. It may taste nice but it will easily set you back a small fortune, it would be cheaper to make your own. Another thing that has deters me is the ingredients in some of their products, such as the sausages. The list just seems far too long. I'll leave it at that! They sell a range of other items all of which are, again, slightly more expensive than I would like. I suppose I just don't feel as though I'm getting value for money. The customer service is good as is the variety of items available but as far as price and quality of certain things goes I feel it just misses the mark. read more

We decided on Beckett's Farms for our - post 5K run - breakfast. The food was very good. We had the old fashioned and the rise and shine. Sausages and bacon were great! Had to knock it down to a four because it was a bit pricey and the service was poor. Definitely visit the shop when you go! There was a lot to choose from for even more food and pastries. read more

It was 1:30pm and my wife and I were looking forward to lunch. We saw an empty table so we were surprised to be told there would be a 25min wait. So we walked around the farm shop for about 15min when we noticed that the beeper we had been given promised a 10% discount in the shop. Suspecting a con I returned to the restaurant to find that table still empty 15min later. Staff said it was reserved for a cream tea at 2:30pm, 45min later. An hour would've been plenty of time for us to have lunch and vacate the table in time for its booking. It seems that Bennett's, that used to be one of our favourite places to eat, has devised a rigged queueing system in an attempt to increase business for the shop by not immediately seating its restaurant customers. We shall not be returning to what used to be one of our favourite places. read more

My son and I visited Becketts Farm for their Easter chick hatching event. It's a shame that you can no longer hold the chicks but I completely understand the reasoning (if I was a few day old chick I would not want to be manhandled by a bunch of snotty toddlers!) Even without the chick holding element, we still had a great time checking out the animals and watching the baby chicks in their incubators. Tickets were only £2 each (£5 for adults with £3 voucher for the shop) which I thought was a bargain. After spending time with the animals we headed over to the farm shop. The products here are so great I could literally spend a fortune. On this occasion, I limited our purchased to strawberries (extremely tasty unlike their supermarket counterparts), chicken nibblets from the rotisserie and pork and leek sausages (the fattest, meatiest, tastiest sausages EVER!) I would definitely recommend Becketts for their events, which they hold regularly, but also as somewhere to purchase fresh, good quality produce. read more

I used to use this place as a meeting point if I was due to meet anyone driving in from south of the city. I love it so much as an alternate place to work from that now I go there anyway. It feels like it's completely away from the city and yet it's not far at all. There are no distractions and plenty of places to plant the laptop and work away, complete with free WiFi when I need it. There are also plenty of meal deals to entice you try a cake or baguette with your drink. Of course this is a farm shop and that alone is enough to visit with plenty of handmade and locally made goodies to bring home. On top of this there is a cooking school one side of the shop and conference facilities upstairs which would surely make even the dullest of conferences interesting. There is plenty of parking right outside and it's very easy to get to from the M42. read more

Stale bread, stale cakes, I use the farm shop everyday, but today was my last day, purchased two loaves bread and several cakes when I got home the bread was STALE and the cakes UNEATABLE, rang up the bakery counter and was told that the bakers DO NOT WORK ON SUNDAYS so the bread is baked on Saturday morning for Sundays !!! So how can this shop say BAKED FRESH, there is not a sign put up on Sundays to say that the bread is not fresh, after this the bakery staff said if I went back I could have a free STALE loaf (big deal) Went to Tesco express fresh bread half the price, I have banned all my employees from Becketts and will be cancelling our works xmas party. read more

What a wonderfully versatile place! I have been here a few times and discovered that this place has so much to offer. It is quite large and when I have been it has always been really busy. I came to have a browse around the farm shop, which offers a lovely range of fresh farm produce, from vegetables to cheeses, meats and chutneys. I love the fact that the food is fresh, it really makes a difference and I do not mind paying a little bit more for this. They also offer party food platters and celebratory cakes if you need to cater for a party, which is quite handy. The coffee shop is nice too and I enjoyed a cappuccino last time I visited. The staff were friendly and always seem very busy. It is quite pricey but I definitely think that is it worth a trip and upon my second visit, I found out from one of the waitresses that they also cater for conferences and weddings and they also have a cookery school! It sounds amazing. Overall, I think it's a lovely place. read more

Becketts Farm produce is great quality but too expensive for regular shopping. Nevertheless, I still drive for miles to shop at the deli and the bread and cakes counter which is also good quality. My last visit to the deli was very disappointing though when I saw the server wipe the carving knife with a dish cloth out of the sink prior to carving the ham. Now to me that's not the same as washing the knife then using paper towels to dry it and let's face it, who knows what the dish cloth has been used for! The Deli is now out of bounds for me which is a shame but I'm not risking the health of my family because of poor hygiene practices. read more
