I've been going to Craig to get my hair cut for about 13 years now. I used to go to Loren down on…read moreEast Main Street before he passed away, then turned to Craig when I needed high and tights in high school for JROTC. Nobody can give a good men's haircut like Craig. He really is good, and he gives a better haircut than many I have been able to get even on military bases (I continued the hair style during my six years in the Army and ever since, given how poofy my hair is if it gets the least bit long). I always save my haircut for Craig when I know I'm going to be visiting West Virginia from where I now live in the D.C. area. It's just tough to find someone who does such a good job, although I do miss the hot cream shave on the back of my neck that I get from my barber up here... but Craig gets closer on other areas than most, so it balances out perfectly. Craig's barber shop is your old-time classic barber shop where all the old men come to get their gossip and do what we native West Virginians call "politickin'." The interior is rustic, and you'll find posters hanging up of everyone from Jesus to Barney Fife. There's a snake skin on the wall, along with Craig's Marine Corps discharge papers and other interesting trinkets. The Andy Griffith show is almost always on the TV. Coming here is definitely an experience. Unfortunately, that experience is also where I have to deduct one star. I love that Craig knows everyone and does such a good job of facilitating conversation in the shop while still giving great haircuts. It's really impressive, actually. Quite a skill. However, my last few visits, despite there only being about two to four people in front of me, have taken just more than two hours. It really doesn't take that long to do a men's haircut, and I'm conflicted because I really want to support Craig and love getting my haircut there, but it sucks up your whole morning. I just wish the talking was more between the patrons or happened while hair cutting was going on, but it's usually more of a stop and go thing, which drags the haircuts out. This is the best $10 haircut you'll ever have (raised in January from having been $8 for years), and Craig is an absolutely wonderful guy. I always come away knowing about all the new construction projects about to happen in the area, what local politician is doing what, who is going to be the new school principal, that sort of stuff. And I always come away happy with my haircut... never once in 13 years has Craig let me down. I just wish I could get in and out in 30 minutes like I do everywhere else I get a haircut.

Flat Top Fridays - My dad in the barber chair. Cool old-timey atmosphere.

Left a little bit more on top than I'd like for a "high and tight," but they took a straight razor to the sides and did it right. It's really inexpensive, too, only $11! I'm used to paying at least $18 where I live. I think Flat Top Fridays is going to do really well with the river rafting/tourism crowd that comes through Fayetteville. It has that old-school country atmosphere. They've really done a great job with the decorating and making the inside feel old-timey. The hipsters who frequent Fayetteville are going to eat it up! And hey, that's great because this is a great place to get a haircut. This will definitely be my new go-to whenever I'm in WV as opposed to the place I went for years in Oak Hill, primarily because these guys are light years faster and do the straight razor for high and tights. Doesn't hurt that they're basically across the street from Secret Sandwich Society and some of the other great Fayetteville eateries.

The inside of this place is interesting - a lot of classic memorabilia, including the 50s/60s era barbershop chair I sat in. Logan gave me a great haircut and the service was excellent - he used a vacuum to remove the excess hair from my head, trimmed the eyebrows, straight razor for the neck, shoulder/neck power massager...the works! In and out in less than 1/2 hour! If you're in the area and need to be cleaned up, check these guys out.

I didn't want my hair cut but he insisted, didn't put any products on my hair after washing it, and well the pictures speak for themselves regarding the color job. I had asked for heavy highlights all over my head (which I usually get from a different salon) because my roots were growing out. It didn't end well but I did get a refund. I'm not quite cute how he has a cosmetology license. Michael was a great person just horrible at dying hair.

After four years here in WV, I was still having trouble finding a stylist that can cut technical and fashion-forward hair. Then I met Michael. Michael looks like a combination of Edward Scissorhands with a waistcoat and some steampunk vibes going on. His energy can be described as lively and friendly and you immediately know, this guy knows what he is doing and he is an artist! He has multiple locations, and I sat in an antique barber chair on the Quarrier St. location. I had wanted a modern shag cut with a specific fringe and had a picture. He knew exactly how to make it happen and watching him cut hair is nothing short of magic! As he made his way around my head, cutting, swishing and thinning, I could tell he was sculpting something good out of something drab. ( He even had me turn my head upside down for him to balance the cut!) I have to mention he has his OWN private label hair products and they smell AMAZING. (I recommend the honey shampoo/conditioner) I couldn't be happier with my hair, and that is no easy feat as I am a picky little brat. Charleston is lucky to have him for those of us who want rock-star hair, or a precision pixie he is the guy! This man is a trained Barber/ Stylist combo, so when you find that, you better not let go. He has trained in London and LA and it shows. His haircuts feel tailored just for you. I left today feeling cute, like Joan Jett mixed with a little Carol Brady.
