The best part about the store is that they have a really decent selection of snacks, canned/frozen meal items, and aisles of toiletries/pet/baby/hardware items. They also have decent souvenirs! We were told that grocery shopping on the island would be expensive and sparse; we were happy to find this little island gem. They also take cans/bottles and sell ice. The employees were super friendly, and the store is neat and nicely kept.

I haven't reviewed Gustafson's?…read more Giving credit where credit is due, this was another Jane & Michael Stern find from the 2005 update of their classic book Roadfood. Man, do your remember travel books? If you find one in a used book store, pick it up. The classics stay classic. And speaking of the classics, Gustafson's is the real deal. Roadside gas station with a handful of smokers to transform the bounty of the great lakes into delicious succulent morsels of delight. If you don't know, I have what I affectionately call a fat-tooth. And the fish that swim in those frigid fresh water lakes develop such beautiful and silky fat. The lake trout especially! Gustafson's isn't fancy. Walking in the door you may ask yourself, "This is it?". But when you tear open your pouch of smoked lake trout, and pull the meat off the bones with your fingers, with a little of that fat dripping down your arm and chin, you'll say to yourself, "Yeah, this is it." This is a required stop anytime I'm up in the UP. Last visit they were out of the whitefish, but so it goes. And looking back on the listing in Roadfood, the Sterns mentioned seeing smoked menominee in the case, but I've never noticed it before. I'll have to ask next time I'm up. Sure, you can get the salmon. I imagine it's delicious. The Gustafson's crew are great at smoking and salmon takes smoke well. But I say go for the local stuff. Get out of your comfort zone and buy a whole whitefish. Don't fret about heads and bones. Don't worry that you won't finish it (there is a bunch of negative space inside, they aren't as big as they look). You've got this. I believe in you!

There was one person behind the register and two more behind the smoked fish case packaging something. The clerk checked out two people, then began to organize paper in her workspace. The two women behind the fish were busy talking to each other. We stood around feeling foolish for a few minutes while being completely ignored. Then we left. We won't make the mistake of stopping there again.

Think Sam Druker from the General Store in Green Acres, and I kid you not... the theme music from the Beverly Hillbillies was playing in the store! (You young Yelpers... look it up!). I stopped here to get a few gallons because I wasn't sure how far it would be until the next gas station. It literally looks like one of those roadside stands that sells local product, but it had a pump, so I stoped in. The pump said no credit, cash only and you had to pay ahead of time. I went in and said I'll take $10, and handed him a $20. The pumps are old time, so I wasn't used to numbers actually spinning as I pumped. Of course, I went over $10, so I just went for $20. I eventually ended on $20.10. Went back in to tell him I went over the $10, and he said "by how much, we are on the honor system here"! I paid him 10 cents! Before we left, he gave me a Yooper Jigsaw Puzzle" which was a small bag of saw dust. Lol And he gave my wife a small bag that contained a marble (in case you lose your marbles), and candy kiss (to remind you that someone loves you), a penny (so you will never be broke), an eraser (to make your mistakes disappear), a string (to help hold things together) and a rubber band (to stretch yourself to your limits). Thankfully, McDonough's Market carries pretty much everything you could need throughout your stay. Located about a half hour from the main downtown (the ferry dock and community center), it's an easy walk or bike ride over to pick up what you may need. My recent stay was short, so I didn't have to pick up too much. After a 10 mile bike ride, though, only a chilled Gatorade would hit the spot. There was a large variety of flavors of Gatorade, as well as some Vitamin Water, chilling in one of the refrigerators, and I happily availed myself of one. On a separate trip that same visit, I wanted to find some local coffee to take back as a gift for a coffee connoisseur. The bag that I needed was hiding in plain sight, and I missed it on my first go-around. I asked a friendly employee to help me find it, which she did without delay. There's a great welcoming and friendly vibe on the island that was apparent when I was browsing throughout the store, which made it a pleasure to pop in that day. If you find yourself on Beaver Island, make sure you stop by McDonough's for a quick visit!
