I searched the internet for a long time before I picked Bear Creek to build my tiny house. I wanted quality. I wanted it built right AND beautifully. Lots of places slap stuff together and call it a house. The folks at Bear Creak (a family owned business not some big faceless manufacturer using prefabricated crap) heard what I wanted, and built me the HOME I will retire in. Every inch of my space is utlized. They recommended a few things I hadn't thought of but absolutely will need. I'm so thankful. My pets and I will be set for years to come. I can't wait to truly be off grid. read more

My wife and I have been living in our Bear Creek Carpentry Tinyhouse for over 4 years now. When we first approached Bill in 2015, he welcomed us into his shop and sat down with us to work on our dream design for our new home. After talking with him for some time we realized Bill would be able to help us create a home that was beautiful and durable enough to take the brutal cold winters of northern Maine. Bill is a super nice guy. When we had questions, he had answers. He is very knowledgeable in how to build both large and small spaces. We decided on a 24' tinyhouse. We heat with a Hobbit wood stove, chose stainless steel countertops and Bill picked us a very reliable and efficient backup propane heater. In our living room he was able to take drawings we sent him and create built in "living room" furniture including space for a 40" TV and a full-size pull-out bed for guests. We have a 4-foot storage loft stair storage, full size washer and dryer, full sized shower and a composting toilet with build in hook ups for standard toilet if we ever decide to convert. We had originally asked for an on-demand heater, but he convinced us to go with a tank after a previous customer had issues with one. He included a clever fold down porch. Bill will include standard appliances in his quote. We opted to buy our own and have them shipped to him directly. Bill was able to build our home around the appliances we chose. He also made sure that all the ceilings, loft access and entry ways were comfortable for everyday living for someone over 6' 3" tall. Bill is a carpenter by trade. You can tell by his craftsmanship and pride in his work. That said, during our build Bear creek Tiny homes did have some difficulty meeting predetermined deadlines. We made plans to be in our home according to our contract made in 2015. It was a very frustrating time, as we ended up having to make alternative plans for four months while waiting for the house to get finished. We lived 3 winters in Maine, 2 of which were up near the White Mountains. Nights could get as low as -20 and last for weeks. In Maine the house withstood snow and ice storms covering up and over our windows, rain and hail and insane humidity. We now live in Northern Arizona. The house does a great job in all weather and climates and continues to be as beautiful as the day we picked it up! With the wood stove and a backup propane heater, we were never cold even when the weather outside was frightful (actually we had to open windows throughout the winter when we would have a fire going and decide to cook dinner as our house by Bear Creek Carpentry is so well insulated). I will say, one of our neighbors in the white mountains area had a tumbleweed. She had nothing but problems during the winter with freeze ups, heating systems and subsequently needing significant repairs and she paid twice as much for her home. Now, living in a Tinyhouse is a lifestyle change. You have to learn the ropes and what works and what doesn't. Bill says, "We are all adults here...things will loosen and shift when you tow but you both will learn to fix as you go." Bill has been a helping hand to us over the last few years making suggestions and providing support in how to fix problems that arise for any home on wheels or on a foundation (big or small). He did a video tutorial for us on how to convert a normal house fuse box's power supply to work with 50 amps or convert to an extension cord. In the last 4 years we have added a few touches of paint, installed a deadbolt to our door, replaced the heating element in our water heater, changed out the sink faucet, had a weight distribution system welded to the trailer, got a 5 foot extension on our chimney (the white mountains area was really windy and we got some backdrafts on 40+ MPH winds, but not anymore with the extension). Our house is still as strong and well-crafted as it was back in 2016. It has stood up to some pretty gnarly weather, 3 moves, and a 5,000-mile cross country tow. The woodworking makes the house feel like a nice cozy cabin and the exterior has many custom woodwork accents. I would recommend Bear Creek Tiny homes if you want a home built to last in any climate. read more

I hired this company to build my tiny house on wheels. They were a big help in designing it and I got to go visit my house several times during construction and they were super nice to me and my dogs. My house did arrive a few months behind schedule, which was frustrating because I never did find out the reason. But they did deliver it and showed me how everything worked. Like any new house there are sometimes kinks to be worked out. I didn't get the fridge I wanted, and had to buy my own. In their defense it was not an easy one to find and it took some searching to find it. The builder was great about taking back the other fridge. The trap thingy at the bottom of the shower wasn't insulated enough so ice was forming and holding water so the shower wouldn't drain. They came out (a 4 hour drive, mind you) and added insulation under the trailer for me as soon as they could. There were a few other minor things I can't remember now, but they took care of everything I asked them to. Here's my only complaints about the house. I really don't like the tankless water heater that came with it. The house is past the warranty now, so it's my responsibility to change it out. I should have said something when I had the chance, because I'm sure they would have done something about it. The water temperature can only be changed at the heater, not at the tap. You can change it from cold to hot at the tap, but you only get one hot temperature and even if you keep the setting on the heater the same, it will heat up the water to different temperatures depending on the temperature of the water entering. So for water coming through a hose to the tiny house in different weather, it makes for a very difficult showering experience. I don't know if this could have been known or you only find this out by using it. So, it doesn't hurt to do some of your own research for the appliances you want. I was also not happy with the custom front door, as it may not fit correctly -not sure exactly what this issue is. They did install new weather stripping, but it didn't hold. And again, life got busy and I didn't have them come back to see what else could be done. Overall, I think this was a great company to work with. They took care of any issues that came up when I asked them to. Other than my front door issue, the house is extremely well built and I am happy with it. They put in high quality windows, it's ventilated properly and they built it exactly how I wanted it. I would have given them 5 stars if the front door had been right and the house delivered on time. But like I said, overall I'm very happy. I love my THOW! read more

I don't have time for the book required to warn people away from this builder, owner [William] Bill Rockhill Sr and Bear Creek Carpentry. My friend worked with this guy for 1.5 years waiting for her project to be completed (the estimated time was 4 months and no extraordinary work was added to the original project). If you like getting hanged up on when you ask for when the building will be finished; if you have an unending supply of money when this builder refuses to provide ballpark estimates for added work/changes; when you listen to this experienced carpenter whine about not getting official elevations, but had been provided detailed digital drawings of elevations, layouts and component placement as well as a myriad of notes for built-ins and appliances; if you, a customer, just generally enjoys being belittled, and bullied, then Bear Creek Carpentry is for you! read more

December 2014 DO NOT HIRE this company to build your Tiny House ... Here is a warning for my fellow Tiny House dwellers that plan to hire someone to build your house. I moved into my new tiny house last week. I hired this company and since getting the house from them, here are the issues I have had to have repaired and/or are having repaired: 1. All hookups on the "wrong" side of the house; all hookups should be on the driver's side of the house from trailer tongue if one needs to park in an RV or mobile home park (I did not know this but perhaps as a builder of tiny houses on wheels, he should have?) 2. Wired for 110 V, needed 220 V for appliances. 3. Toilet venting not adequate for incinerator toilet: installed vent just below bathroom window, which had to be open to provide fresh air intake for toilet which meant that fumes blew back into the open window. 4. Toilet installed within inches of the shower: one phone call to me would have remedied this; I would have reconsidered the plan for the toilet. 5. Kitchen sink plumbed incorrectly: hot water intake where cold should be, and vice versa. 6. Cold water plumbed to the dishwasher!?!?! 7. Installed a 2.5 gallon hot water heater instead of an "on demand" hot water heater as outlined in the agreement. Who can take a shower with 2.5 gallons of water?!?!? 8. Shower head installed too low - at approximately 5' 8" tall when it could have been put much higher (there was plenty of room). 9. No ventilation into the house, anywhere. 10. Propane heater installed incorrectly; buildup of soot on inside indicates that the ventilation was not installed correctly. 11. No putty to nail/screw holes before painting; all are showing. 12. No clean up; sawdust everywhere. 13. Paint spills on floor and counter top. Proceed with caution when seeking out a builder - do not make the same mistake that I did. read more

Bill and his boys did an awesome job enclosing in our front porch area to add a second room to our cabin. (The space was essentially the size of a tiny house, sans plumbing.) My wife and I are real sticklers for detail and really needed to maximize our space and the things that were worked on...and worked out...in the course of the project blew my mind! We'd seen Bill's work before and knew we'd get the quality we needed at a reasonable price. We were not disappointed! From the very first day, (demo day) the care and quality of the prep, the clean-up after each day, the attention to cutting, nailing, screwing...everything was amazing. They treated our place like it was their own every step of the way...and sent us pictures each day we couldn't be on site to see the progress. (And it was several pictures over the course of the day...not just one and done! Yet again another example of their attention to detail.) Bill and company will go above and beyond to make sure you are pleased with your project and you will certainly want to be open to the vast wealth of knowledge and experience Bear Creek Carpentry brings to the table. Being an early pioneer in the tiny house movement, we could see that Bill's wisdom and care carried over into every project he was involved in and we were glad we were able to be on the receiving end of that in many ways and at many times. We very much looked forward to their arrival on site each day and enjoyed the banter between us. (Not only are they great workers but they are fun to hang out with!) I will also say that Bill is GREAT about getting back to you and is very approachable via text. I honestly can't think of 1 time I had to wait more than 12 hours to hear back from him and almost always it was within an hour! He does what he says he will do...to the very best of his ability and he's got a great family that is right there with him. Without a doubt we would call Bill...we WILL call Bill, if we ever need another project done. You won't be disappointed with the quality, effort and engagement Bear Creek Carpentry gives to their work. Their stuff is NY tough and is as solid as Bill is! We'd highly recommend them. read more
