Second time holiday shopping here this month. Great shop for gifts at all price points that will be enjoyed. Brought my daughter and grandson this time. The store has incredible items that are unique and exciting. Will selected wonderful stained glass window decals for himself and his sister. He picked out a Muzak radio with flashlight for himself and helped me select one his sister would like. I bought a wood toned Muzak radio as a gift to myself! It is a small portable blue tooth speaker. I will listen to FM radio on it. Cool items: Pizza glass cleaning cloth Adorable gingerbread stuffed animals Saw shaped plastic knife for cake ( great for lettuce too) Stickers Etc. This Jay Street store was bustling was customers today! So happy it is a success. It Came From Schenectady! Well, actually, it came from South Florida, but in true full circle fashion, this shop has roots in the 518 after all, and that's an origin story I can get behind! Bear and Bird is the shop you didn't know we needed in downtown Schenectady, and it has the potential to become your go-to, one-stop-shop when looking for the perfect gift for someone who has it all, or whenever you're in the mood for some good, old fashioned "treat yo self" action. I attended the Grand Opening / Ribbon Cutting yesterday, excited to finally take a peek and do some shopping, and upon stepping foot inside the colorful, cozy, well curated space, I felt like a kid in a candy store, completely blown away and overwhelmed by all the delicious goodies! And I'm not just talking about the knockout Italian cookie platter courtesy of Schenectady staple, Civitello's Bakery, I'm talking about the inventory! Let's face it: it's 2020 - we're well into the Amazon age, so when it comes time to shop for gifts, what do we get the people who really do have it all? Enter Bear and Bird: a local shop stocked with plenty of thoughtfully curated, most likely "never seen before" goodies, trinkets, vintage knickknacks, original art and high quality, framable prints, games, whimsy DIY projects, and other curiosities beyond your wildest imagination. You're sure to find something here to knock the socks off your giftee, and isn't that part of the fun? The element of gift giving surprise, but with a twist. Bear and Bird is raising the bar on Capital Region gift giving, and I'm here for it. Sure, downtown Schenectady is experiencing a glow up and starting to sparkle a little bit more thanks to shops and boutiques taking the leap, opening their doors, and making their mark on State Street. With all the development downtown in recent years, it's awesome to finally see small businesses spilling out from the Jay Street Pedestrian Marketplace, long known as downtown's only small biz shopping scene, and now dotting State Street like a trail of breadcrumbs leading to an alternate universe / expansive downtown small biz bubble! We've come a long way, baby. In talking with the absolutely delightful owner, I likened her space and overall vibe to the type of gift shop and gallery one might find in the, "Ren & Stimpy," universe, authentic, original, and decidedly quirkier and edgier than anything else in the world of upstate NY shops, galleries, or boutiques, and she was on board with the analogy. Smart, whimsy, unique, one-of-a-kind, fun Every nook and cranny is Instagram worthy, and it's hard to take a step without fixating your eyes on a cute little display, piece of art, or bedroom of your choice! That's right: one of my favorite displays was a converted dollhouse, each bedroom stocked with assorted trinkets. My personal fave bedroom found a ceramic lamb happily positioned next to a "pad of butter" notepad (can't make this stuff up!) I love for the puns, people. This corridor of downtown Schenectady is really taking shape, and it's happening fast. I'm telling you right now, this shop deserves a stop the next time you're in the neighborhood; with a neighbor like Frog Alley Brewing Company, Bountiful Bread moving in across the street, and the Mill Artisan District taking shape around the corner, it's only a matter of time before the word gets out on this place! Without a doubt the highlight of our long weekend in the Berkshires and NY! I wanted to buy the entire store it was so packed with cute, quirky and amazing items. The woman working there was super nice. She took the time to help me find prints and wrapped them up nicely. I ended up purchasing a great Goldilocks print (so detailed and cool), a funny don't hoard during a pandemic print with bears and a magnet that spoke to me as a cat owner about not over feeding the cat. I wanted to rearrange a wall in my dining room where I have meetings and the two prints were perfect. Everyone has commented how cool they are and wanted to know where I got them. Fun! Prices were fantastic too - one of the prints was only $8. We'll be returning the next time we find ourselves in the area for sure! read more

We visited Bear and Bird a few days after they opened and are excited to come back often. The gallery is so tastefully curated, with fun beauty. Art is so important for human's mental health; an oasis of delight in downtown Schenectady that transitions nicely to their online platform.
