You'll love breakfast in the Great Room in Connemara House (one of 3 houses with available rooms), a beautifully appointed space with tons of light and distinctive American colonial feel. Breakfast, which changed daily, featured super fresh scones, muffins or baked peach, followed by eggs & sausage, quiche & bacon...all delicious and with a definite farm-to-table freshness that's hard to beat. The location gives good proximity to Storm King Art Center, West Point, Schunnemunk State Park, and Woodbury Common Outlets. We plan on coming back this fall to experience the fall foliage, as well as Dena and John's amazing hospitality!

We arrived for the start of fall foliage and historic tours of the Hudson River Valley, but disappointed nothing on display at this property would refer to this special time of year. The main house of Caldwell House B&B has declined into a state of neglect. Instead of pumpkins, corn stalks and colorful mums lining the front porch in welcome, there was peeling paint, worn floorboards, and a couple of urns out front with fake poinsettias accompanied by fake Canada geese, one at such an angle it appeared inebriated. A dilapidated sleigh at the corner of the front porch made one wonder...WHY?! We were 6 friends reunited from all points of the US. For the first two days of our stay, we had no hot water in our rooms. Thankfully, the innkeeper refunded each of us a nights stay. Photographs on their website are from many years ago, when the main building was newly painted and planted and flags waved proudly from the front porch in welcome. Personal photographs posted here attest to this property now in a state of decline, as it is apparent efforts have been put in other areas of the property- the bridal and event spaces, at the detriment of the other areas of this business. This is not anywhere near a luxury property as the website would have you believe. The breakfasts are at one 9 AM seating only, and that makes it very inconvenient for anyone wanting to get on the road to any early morning activities, especially as many are an hour or more away. One expects a home-cooked meal at a Bed And Breakfast. It appeared many of the offerings were frozen and warmed in a microwave. Bacon, one morning was limp, a quiche tasted glommy (too much flour). Blintzes were inedible, their texture hardened by being heated at too high a microwave temperature, no doubt. A hard cooked egg enveloped in an egg mixture with polenta at the bottom had promise, if it had been prepared with something to give it flavor, such as some herbs, cheese or at least a pinch of salt. There is no accommodation such as a continental breakfast for those wanting to set out for an early start to their day. We found it very difficult to find the property coming from dinner each, even though lights on either side of the main sign in front of the property are installed. They were not working any of the four nights we stayed. I would not recommend this way overpriced property!

Check in time is 3pm (check out is noon) but we arrived super early at 9:45am. We were greeted by Eric and Suzie: two LOVELY hosts! We checked in, went over the complimentary breakfast (7:30am-9am), used their facilities, got a tour of the home (lots of original furniture especially in the main parlor room), and was told our room would be ready by noon. Perfect, as we had reservations at Brotherhood winery nearby. There are beautiful rescue horses on the property and you can feed them apples and carrots if you like. The horses are in a fenced off area. Mama is the friendliest out of the bunch and Pegasus is the shyest. We stayed in Primrose (the largest room) and spent the rest of the day lounging by the lovely pool. The breakfast was Delicious! Bacon, special veggie rolled omelet, toasted English muffins, tea, juice, fresh fruit, tea, and homemade blueberries muffins. Husband and I have stayed in numerous hotels all around the world and we also travel extensively for work but what makes staying in B&B's like Dominion so special is: it feels like you're coming home to family who warmly embrace you.

With a little luck, I managed to book a room for two nights during Labor Day weekend with only about a week's notice at the Botsford Briar. I found it on the internet, having never before been to Beacon, a little escape I had planned because of hiking, kayaking, the Dia: Beacon, the boat to tour Bannerman Castle, and Main Street were all within walking distance. I arrived quite early on Saturday via train and headed up to Main Street. I had a kayaking tour reservation and had planned to do that before checking in at Bostford Briar. However, when there was some miscommunication and the tour left without me, the folks at Mountain Top outdoor store called the proprietors of the Botsford Briar (yeah, it's that small of a town) to see if I could check in early. And all was well; they were happy to take me early. My room was ready and I headed over...and up the rather steep hill of High Street. Charlie met me halfway up the hill and insisted on taking my bag the rest of the way. The house is charming and looks just as it does on the website photo. Inside, it's filled with curiosities on the first floor. I met Shirley there too. Throughout my stay, she and Charlie were wonderful. They took the time to try to find an alternate kayaking solution for me, suggested restaurants, went to the trouble of having my breakfast ready quite early on my last morning there since I had to leave before the normal time, etc. I stayed in the Wisteria Room, which was lovely. The bed was comfy. There were a couple of chairs as well as a table with two dining chairs with bottles of water on a tray. In case it was needed, there was an AC unit. Lots of sunlight could come in through the generous windows (though you could pull curtains and shades too). Wifi was free. The TV wasn't a flat screen, but I didn't watch it so, who really cares? The room had wonderful charm and was clearly lovingly decorated. The bathroom was a private one down the hall. However, they've thoughtfully added a curtain one can pull to really make that whole wing private (so you don't feel odd walking to the bathroom in your pajamas; nobody can see you). I loved the claw foot tub and had a nice soak each night. It was a large bathroom with nice towels and was meticulously clean. I spent a good portion of both evenings watching the sunset on the beautiful shared deck out back. It's at the top of High Street and you can see down and across the Hudson River. It's beautiful and a wonderful quiet spot (or a place to chat with other guests, as I did the second evening). Also shared for the guests is a small room with a fridge, cupboard (thoughtfully stocked with glasses, wine glasses, corkscrews, etc.), and a single serving coffee maker for anything you wanted to make or store yourself. Breakfast was quite generous. There was one freshly baked (and still warm!) item each day along with other breads, a fantastic fruit plate, juice, and coffee. The only thing I would have added would have been a hard boiled egg or something so that I could get in a little protein. But with what was provided, I really wasn't lacking at all in nourishment. It's brought to your room at your chosen time on a tray. The location is great. It's easy walking distance to the train station, Dia: Beacon, boat launch, and Main Street. It's within walking distance of a trail head for hiking as well though you should know that it's a long hike in itself up Main Street to reach it. I'm so glad I came to Botsford Briar to get away. It's so clear how much love (and personal talent/handiwork) Charlie and Shirley have put into the place. And they really take pride in making it a wonderful retreat. I wouldn't be surprised if I found myself back there again when weary of the city.

The decor of the room and the b&b are not my particular taste, cluttered, heavy fabrics, heavy wooded furniture. Taste is subjective though and I could imagine another person may enjoy. The air conditioner is positioned in such a way that it blows directly on the bed. I found sitting out on the deck to be noisier than we hoped for...can hear the train whistle and cars on a road in the distance. The morning breakfast spread had coffee, juice, pastries and fruit, none of which were of the best quality. I only met Charlie who was friendly and very helpful. I spoke to a woman who I believe is the owner by phone while booking and when we were likely to arrive after their 9pm time limit and our phone personalities did not mesh well.

The innkeeper, Nancy, was just amazing. She was so nice and welcoming and that always makes all the difference. Before we even checked in, she was nice enough to give us recommendations on things to do and places to eat, and she did the same while we were there. The inn itself is small, only 3 rooms, and I think that makes it even more special. It's beautiful inside and out. The trees were a bit barren in March but even then, there was a certain beauty in the barrenness. I'm sure when everything is in full bloom, the grounds will be amazing (the same is probably true of the whole valley). The inside was done up really nicely too. There's a dining area, a living room, a wet bar and lots of seating downstairs, all with nice decor. We stayed in room 3 and it was beautiful, it was also pretty big with a large bathroom as well. One of the things I loved was that breakfast was at whatever time you wanted it. You wrote down your time on the clipboard the night before and showed up when you were ready. That makes it so much easier to be on your own schedule. And the breakfast! Delicious! You have your usual tea, coffee, juice, cereal, bread but then the rest is all freshly made. We were there two mornings and the first one we started with fresh fruit all cut up, and the second with overnight oats. Then you get a pastry type item (freshly made), then you can pick either a savory option (e.g. poached eggs) or a sweet one (e.g. pancakes), each day was something different. That great breakfast made for a good start to the day. Also worth noting that there were bottles of water for free in the wet bar, which I always think is a nice touch. The inn is in a good location, close to lots of wineries, restaurants, and not too far from the FDR house and the Roosevelt mansion. It's right next to a trail that leads to the walk-over-the-Hudson - that walk is a must! Crossing that bridge is so beautiful. We had an amazing time and I can't recommend this place enough. We will definitely be back.

The detail in the rooms, the perfection at breakfast, the lovingly manicured grounds, assorted wonderful nooks... at first I was wondering what there is to DO in Highland and, to be honest, I'm still not sure... but given the bike path, beautiful scenery and Inn At Twaalfkill, I'm not sure what else you need. I'm not always a fan of B and Bs... they can tend to be a little twee and you feel like you have to tiptoe around... partially because the walls in a good hotel are much thicker, the spaces less cramped, your anonymity more protected. There may be a bit of that tip-toeing here (the floors are pretty squeaky and you are worried that you are making too much noise for someone on a different sleeping schedule) but that is the only downside. We had just spent two nights in a pretty nice hotel in Beacon. The room was over 50% more expensive than here and, while large enough, there was not one square foot of horizontal space to put anything down in the bathroom.... The room at Inn at Twaalfill had so much guest-friendly space (especially in the bathroom), you would not likely have a use for all of it. If all B&Bs were this great and this price, I would never stay anywhere else.
