Fitting in with the nursery theme but a very unexpected elegance of a high end restaurant. Their food presentation couldn't be faulted and the tastes of dish complimented everything about it. I came in tired, looking for something new. I came out feeling refreshed. It was a great experience and one I intend to make regular. Staff were friendly, the ambiance relaxed, airy and open. So much to see while you wait with lots of explosions of colour. Thank you for thinking outside the box and creating such a vibrant space.

The menu is tasteful and doesn't bombard you with too many options. My mum loved her chicken pot pie and was surprised to find a darker filling than the normal mornay appearance. Crispy skinned salmon is always a winner for me. I was a little disappointed that the asparagus mentioned was a small amount sliced into the lemon risotto. I was picturing full stems draped over the rice but that's just me. I love asparagus. The iced chocolate was almost a meal in itself. Beautifully presented and unashamedly topped with whipped cream. A few minor points were the small amount of car spaces, with plenty of cars parked roadside; and finding the cafe entrance. Maybe we missed it or perhaps it was located elsewhere pre COVID. As it stands we weaved our way through pots and plants until we saw it down the other end. Not that that will stop me from returning for a breakfast visit next time.

Located on arguably Newcastle's best eat out street, Darby Street and great to see it adding another dimension to the variety of restaurants already on offer. Tastefully Austrian with beer flags and music, but not at all in your face. We ordered 4 different beers and I absolutely loved the different glasses for each. Pretzels to start that were warm; perfectly browned and salted on the outside and soft on the inside. My friend also got the pretzel stick served with a Camembert spread. Menu wasn't too foreign with my friend opting for the schnitzel, my partner the farmers plate and pork knuckle for me. My partner didn't like the amount of fat in his meal but for better or worse I ate every last piece of fat and meat I could scavenge from the knuckle. It was amazing! Ending the night with apple schnapps that were too strong for me but friend loved them. Both of us going traditional with the apple strudel and the Viennese iced coffee for my partner. He said the coffee was very strong with my friend swooping in again to finish it off. We are a good team like that! The bill was expensive at over $200 but I feel it was worth it. Made another booking already to take my Dad for Father's Day.

Although it's quite new, the decor feels a little tired. Some furniture might have be inherited from the old restaurant (Long bench). BUT, don't let this put you off. The food was delicious. We shared our meals and the waffles with ricotta and fresh fruit was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had in Newy. It was incredible! Service was good. Friendly, useful and sweet. Maybe a bit young and nervous but I'm sure after another few months she'll be great. The dinner menu looks well priced and delicious and so we'll definitely be back. A sophisticated take on lots of pork dishes. The back courtyard would be a nice place for an afternoon German beer, it looked like they had a selection on tap. Give this place a try next time you're on Darby St.

The steak was tender and the polenta chips and beans matched perfectly. After leaving dinner, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that the Quest Hotel provides a chargeback service with the Wombat, and breakfast would be served in this pub. I woke up the next morning without the highest expectations. Steak was a safe bet at a pub, but gormet breakfast at a pub is more unusual than seeing a real wombat in the streets of Newcastle. Breakfast at this "pub" was fantastic. In the morning you're greeted by friendly staff, fantastic coffee and a good breakfast selection. My only annoyance was that breakfast is not served until 7:30AM, which is late for an early-morning person. After leaving the Quest, I have not left The Wombat. I'm in the 8th week of my "short" visit to Newcastle, and I buy a coffee from the Wombat daily. I tend to have dinner at least once a week, and my office has had 2 small functions in this restaurant since the first day of my visit. I leave Newcastle this week, and it only seemed fitting that I had my going away dinner at The Wombat.

(Judging from the biblical names they are related.) The restaurant interior is a bit dated, but the view is amazing. We enjoyed seeing quite a few para gliders soaring (and pulling acrobatic tricks) at reasonably close distance above the cliff, which was fun. We started with the "Seared Lamb Fillets with Peach and Mint Salad , Couscous and Labna $24", which was excellent. Very creative and tasty. For our meals we had: "Saltwater Barramundi with Caper, Tomato, Olive, Chilli Salsa and Chickpeas $37" and "King Prawns with a Mild Chilli Fettuccini Sautéed with Spanish Onion, Snow Peas, Brandy and Double Cream with Salmon Roe $42" Truth be told, we weren't blown away. The fettuccini in particular was not as it should be. For $42 you simply shouldn't have glued-together pasta strands; the sauce also wasn't anything special. The barramundi was nice and creatively paired with chili salsa and chickpeas. So, a bit of a mixed bag. Positive: Great view, great starter and barramundi Negative: Dated look, pasta faux-pas, pricey If we are again in this area one day, we would likely go check out a different place. Conclusion: 3 stars.

The place has a nice atmosphere and does not have the typical cafe vibe. They have a wide variety of food to choose from - from breakfast to dinner. I ordered a standard toast with chunks (not as a spread) of avocado, feta cheese and coreander. Then for lunch I ordered a soft shell crab burger which was super delicious! You won't hear many cafes that would sell anything like this (not that I can recall anyway). My colleagues have ordered steak burgers here and they absolutely loved it. There are 2 coffee section - the smaller one being referred to as "The Quickie" (ideal for those who come in to order coffee only) while the other one is situated in "The Parlor" (where meals are actually served). There is also a variety of Gelato flavours to choose from - also from The Parlor. The staff are friendly and are dressed in flannel shirts and jeans. Yes. This is their uniform. I will say that this is definitely one of the very best cafes I've ever been in. Many things pertaining to this place is novelty! In my opinion anyway...

It's one thing to be scruffy and wear Hawaiian shirts with boardies for a uniform, it's another to carry yourself in kind. It's not that the service isn't friendly, it is. It's just that every time someone serves me there I get a bit grossed out. I've been there five times. So far I'm yet to experience an interaction with the counter staff that doesn't involve: a finger in the ear, putting receipts in mouth (then pulling them out and providing to customer), sucking on napkins (pulling the wet part out of mouth, then touching customer food), mixing cash handling with food and drink prep. Eww guys. The music is too loud to carry a conversation without raised voices. Both of these issues are easily fixed, and overall this is a nice establishment. I'd be back if these things were taken care of. The good intent to create customer experience is obvious.

'Bring it' was my response. Ohh and let me tell you, it was well worth the try. Free wi-fi is always appreciated, so make sure you ask for the password if you're planning on getting some work done.
