Sombrero hats, shoes, Mexican dresses, toys, the list goes on. Be careful about the stairs; they are rather steep. I love how the signs tell you to keep your children with you. There is also another sign telling you that you cannot try on the shoes. I asked the salesgirl about it, and she said that they had lots of people coming in to try on the shoes, but not buying any. And then people who actually bought the shoes would come back saying that the shoes smelled like feet from all the people who had tried on the pair of shoes previously. True story, swear to God. I guess tourists have stinky feet! I was looking for a souvenir for myself. Warned about the shoes, I actually was looking to get either a Mexican blouse or dress as I had seen several gorgeous ones during my stay in San Antonio. The salesgirl was great in helping me pick out one, and even better yet, offered a discount if I paid in cash. Done. Best yet, after visiting Market Square, I noted that this store's clothes prices were indeed less expensive than the stores on Market Square. Same merchandise, different prices. I don't know how the other merchandise stacked up, but it does pay to shop around.

I am mexican, so I always want to give friends stuff that they will like and that will remind them of where I come from, and this is seriously the only place in San Antonio where you can find high quality hand-made Mexican handcrafts, none of that crappy stuff you find everywhere else in the "mercado." They are part of Fonart which is the government fund for encouraging handcraft making (i think) but the point is that the proceeds go to help artisans in Mexico who are struggling to make a living by selling their work. Anyways, the handcrafts might be a bit expensive compared to other stores in the market but like I said, they are worth it, very high quality and the proceeds go to a good place. On the other hand they also sell jewelry which I find it to be very reasonably priced. You can get a pair of sterling silver studs for less than 8 bucks!! and talk about a good place to find cool earrings, rings and necklaces for awesome prices! This place is definately awesome for shopping... too bad they don't have an online store! I miss it!

Market Square Jewelry! This is probably the highest-end…read morejewelry store in Market Square. It's really in one of the pedestrian friendly alley-ways along Market Square, in a small, tidy shop. This store isn't like the rest of the stores in Market Square. The other Market Square shops have dusty merchandise stacked to the ceiling, and witty t-shirts about San Antonio. This isn't like the others. This store has a carefully curated selection of jewelry, all from Mexico. The shop isn't crowded with inventory, instead it's neatly laid out with the jewelry on display in a big case. The store is spotlessly clean, and they run things efficiently. The jewelry is mostly silver, with turquoise and other semi-precious stones set in them. The silver all has those purity numbers stamped in them so you know it's legit. They sell beautiful designs, all with a Mexican twist to them. If Frida Khalao were to have shopped in Market Square for necklaces, this is where she'd go. It's not an over-the-top fancy kinda place- it's not Tiffany's, the prices are still what I'd call reasonable. I'm not much of a jewelry guy, but this stuff would look good for Fiesta or any pachanga you might attend. The staff is quite friendly, and they have all kinds of other weird Mexican decorations to check out if you're not into the jewelry. Parking can be challenging, since it's in the midst of a pedestrian only zone, but you can park under the highway in some places and walk over.

I have yet to make it to their Day of the Dead exhibition or the Mole Throwdown but they are definitely on my to-do list for those days! The inside store has a lot more stuff, but outside, the stuff is the best. You can tell all this stuff is imported from Mexico, they took care of the customs and stuff so you don't have to worry! Everything they sell seems to be well-built, good quality and durable against the elements. The prices are a bit higher than you'll pay in Nuevo Laredo, but they've got this stuff here in USA for you! My favorite is the collection of metal cacti and succulent agaves. Delightful!

There are similar stores around the city but having one so close to home is fantastic. They sell BarbacoApparel shirts (my favorite local brand!), fiesta medals, stickers, jewelry, and Consuela purses. I absolutely adore Consuela purses, so knowing I can buy one here instead of online is such a treat. The one girl managing the shop was very nice (and she was wearing a mask, so props to her for being courteous enough, whether she's trying to keep shoppers from getting sick or prevent herself from getting sick, either way, I respect that), and she was in the process of surveying the store on how to set up the incoming Fiesta merch, post-Holiday stock. We chatted briefly, and overall I just love how uniquely "puro San Antonio" this shop is. In a world where large corporations are thriving, this local shop is a breath of fresh air. Growing up in…read moreSan Antonio, TX I took the Historic Market Square (sometimes referred to as the largest Mexican market in the US) for granite. I thought it was perfectly natural to be immersed in a deeply cultural experience. It was commonplace to experience authentic mariachi's singing in the courtyard or inside the buildings within the Market Square. The mariachi "greto" is so distinctive - a loud, emotion yell that is used to convey joy and passion. Also, to watch the folklórico dancers perform was just beauty incarnate. During the holidays choirs sang both in English and Spanish. My heart melts just thinking about all these wonderful experiences over the years. Historic Market Square captures the essence of San Antonio. One key element of the Market Square is the food and beverages...authentic Mexican food and beverages. Churros are staple in many Latin cultures but certainly in San Antonio. There are two key restaurants within the Historic Market Square that are extremely authentic - La Margarita and Mi Tierra's. When eating at these restaurants you feel like you are in a totally immersive experience from the homemade tortillas to pan dulce. Also, let us not forget about every permutation of margaritas. My heart skips a beat when I think about Historic Market Square. So, totally happy I had chance to return home.
