Down to the cocktail bar

Be At One is located a minute away from Grand Central Station in Birmingham. The bar itself is underground in what use to be a old cinema. Its a very dark environment (as most good bars are) and you can easily lose track of the time of day here. I was here for the launch event and the vibe inside was fantastic. The staff are super fun and make it a fun experience for everyone. Be At One apparently spend £5000 training their staff, and it shows! The team are happy to emulate the nature of the sort of bars you would see typically in the states. Lots of singing, dancing, and throwing drinks around is a staple. The drinks them selves are great with over 100 cocktails being available on the menu. As much fun as it is looking through a cocktail catlogue the staff are happy to assist and create a drink to your liking. They have ice cream on hand so the palette for different sorts of cocktails is quite good. If your looking for a cool bar to just kick back and relax, or two step the night away this is one of Birmingham's finest options!

I visited on a Tuesday early evening and luckily it was happy hour! There was a bouncer on the door checking ID and he was a friendly chap. The bar staff were quick to ensure we were greeted as we walked through the door and explained the happy hour offer then brought menus over to the table. Inside it's quite dark (being underground n' all) the lighting I found quite tacky, and distracting as there were multi coloured sequence lights - like a Christmas tree behind where we were sitting. The menu is huge! All of the classic cocktails as you'd expect, with a few custom recipes exclusive to the bar. The happy hour 2-4-1 offer only applies if you purchase two of the same drink, which meant we couldn't really experience the variety on offer. I also found the drinks to be quite expensive. £8.50 for one cocktail I guess is pretty average for a city centre bar but there's better mixed drinks, and more exciting bars in Birmingham. The staff were great though, even the guy doing email captures on his iPad made conversation with us. It's right opposite New Street Station/Grand Central so if you have spare time before or after a train it's a decent stop off.

When Be at one opened their first bar I was living in London and I quickly became a fan. The personable bar staff the interaction between staff and customers and ultimately the interaction this leads to between other customers makes for an amazing atmosphere. So when I found out this amazing venue was following me up the M42 into a new venue in Birmingham I was extremely excited. And I have to say they did not dissapoint. The atmosphere they have created is everything you could want in a cocktail bar. The seem to have gone out of their way to hire the friendliest bouncer possible which makes for an amazing start. Then through an unassuming doorway and you walk straight into what is a sizable bar. The bar itself is in the centre of a room with booth seats and tables around the edge, this makes for an amazing space perfect for large groups of even dancing. The bar staff are the quality you would expect nothing seems to much trouble and they attempt to serve multiple customers at the same time so it's a smooth service. But this does mean you may get your drinks staggered but this to me isn't a problem. The range of cocktails is amazing and will give any other bars in he city a run for their money, it's not the cheapest but not the most expensive which will ultimately lead to it being extremely popular. This will become my new Friday night venue of choice and I can't wait!

Dan G (Yelp brum community manager) sent me the message to say I am on the guest list today and so I got the bus into town instead of driving!! So I can drink!! The place... I have walked past for a number of weeks and never noticed the door way between caffe Nero and the florist. But it is only across from new street station so it's an ideal location. I was on the guest list and let in but wasn't given a drinks voucher as promised... But I went in and found fellow Yelpers who also didn't get their voucher. Amy gave me one of her happy hour cocktails - dark & stormy which was good.. Then I got us the pornstar martinis which came with prosecco shots which we downed then the bar staff told us we could have poured it in to our cocktail lol! Now we know!!!i had never tried one before and I loved it!!! They have a happy hour which is about 6pm start till 8pm but check with staff. Today you just asked for it, and has to be same cocktails! But you can use their app too! Plus there's a £5 voucher on the app for a random cocktail, Making it fun to get something you haven't thought of! I chickened out but Amy and Oona both tried the app to get a random cocktail! I had three drinks tonight and loved them! I still have two vouchers to use ... So will return!! The staff are all great, singing and dancing while making cocktails. I took pics and one guy .. Maybe have been head of the bar, took my phone off me, called the guys to pose for a selfie and they jumped on the bar etc and he took pics!! Lot of fun with the patrons! I recommend going to this bar, it is £8-10 for cocktails, but you can do the happy hour so that would be a great bargain! Thanks to Dan and fellow Yelpers for a great evening!!!

Irish Disco Biscuit - yum!

I dare anyone not to have fun in this place! It is dark, loud and a bit crazy but I've thoroughly enjoyed both times I've been in so far (once on a Yelp event and once with work colleagues). You enter through a small doorway at the back of the Piccadilly arcade and descend into a large square room with a massive bar in the middle. The music is loud (and nicely varied to appeal to all age groups) and the cocktail list is extensive. The staff are really friendly and seem to be having a lot of fun, they are all dancing and singing while making drinks. The drinks themselves are really well made and tasty. There is a happy hour every evening which can be extended by an hour on their app (Sun-Thurs only) and a 'be appventurous' option which selects a random cocktail for you for £5. I definitely won on this one and got an 'Irish Disco Biscuit' which was delicious. I'm really pleased that this place has opened in Birmingham and am looking forward to many more visits.

Headed to my second Yelp event last night at "Be At One" cocktail bar - basically an underground bar by Piccadilly Arcade where they serve 150 different cocktails - a cocktail lovers dream!!! Wow...where to start! The second you step downstairs into the bar there is the most amazing party atmosphere and the whole interior is super cool lit up red with red leather seating and bar stools dotted around. The music is a selection from the 60s to the 90s so something for everyone to get in the mood for an awesome night ahead! My favourite thing about the whole experience is definitely the staff. Apparently Be At One spends £5,000 training each of its bar staff over eight weeks...well you can certainly tell! These guys and gals are pretty flipping amazing - they create an unbelievable atmosphere and buzz so much so you don't want to leave! I really really really hope they don't loose this as this is definitely a selling point of this cocktail bar. In terms of drinks, our server Jack was super accommodating and made some awesome mocktails including a mango ice-cream based cocktail and a very refreshing mojito - delicious! I am literally counting down until the next time I can go back! Oh and it's super super close to Grand Central so you can always be assured that you can hop on a train home at the end of the evening...although the bar does stay open to 3am so it's up to you really :p Note to self - whenever in need of a dose of awesomeness head to this place!!

Lovely cocktails at the lively new be at one. Very impressed

Nice decor, great for a few after work cocktails.or and early evening boogie. 2 for £10 happy hour all night with the app so will definately stay for a few!

Really neat cocktail bar. A bit flashy for my taste, but they have a really, incredibly extensive cocktail menu. Cocktails are reasonably priced and so it's great during happy hour! The bar staff are incredibly friendly and good at their jobs. The music is good, and vibe pretty chill (except on Saturdays... I popped in on a Saturday night and the place was rammed and the music was pumping loud!) If you're a cocktail person you should definitely drop in and see what they've got :)

Happy Hour at Be At One!!

Located immediately as you leave Birmingham New Street, Be at One have taken over the old snooker hall, and what a transformation! Lively, fun, the music is load, the cocktails numerous and the staff vibrant. We managed to squeeze on happy hour drinks during its first week of opening, and we weren't disappointed. A great addition to Birmingham's cocktail scene.

This bar opened a month ago, I went for a few drinks for my birthday. You go down some stairs opposite new street station which gives the bar a kind of 'speak easy' feel. The cocktail menu is vast, the staff knowledgeable, and they have some fantastic special offers. The staff on the night choose the music for the whole shift. I'm going back again soon.

The cocktail bible.

Cocktail bars have been spreading like a delicious (but pricey) virus across Birmingham city centre. Can Brum really handle another one serving up £11 mixed drinks? The short answer is yes, as long as the drinks and service are as top notch as Be At One. Be At One is a chain of bars that have been around for a hot minute, starting out in London and currently sitting at 30 locations. It's about time they arrived in the second city, rounding out a portfolio of much smaller cities and towns. Birmingham's version is in a former snooker hall that I had never paid mind to until the opening of the bar. It's in Piccadilly Arcade, essentially in the basement with an entrance opposite New Street Station. Descending down some stairs unto the unknown, you are met with an upscale looking lounge that could be mistaken for one of the city's better night clubs. The bar itself is rectangular, allowing one of the many staff to serve patrons with ease and giving customers a place to sip their cocktails if they don't want to opt for the plush lounge seats wrapped along the walls or the standing tables. I was fortunate enough to snag an opening night invite via Yelp for my first visit. As other reviewers have already pointed out, bartenders employed by Be At One are heavily invested in through a £5,000 training program. The liveliness of the staff here on opening night was infectious. There is almost a competitive nature in the way that the staff construct cocktails with quite a bit of showmanship. While classic songs from the 70's, 80's, and 90's blare overhead, the bartenders will sometimes pause in unison to blurt out an emphasis on a particular lyric. It wasn't out of the norm either for the staff to take acrobatic selfies with patron's phones. The cynic in me wonders if the bartenders are enjoying their jobs that much or if it's a directive from their corporate overlords. The founders of the chain cut their teeth at TGI Fridays years ago, known for their 'flair' uniform requirements and showy bartending. As for the drinks themselves, there are over 150 cocktail combinations that Be At One specialises in, all detailed through their menu and flavour wheel. Want a sour drink with bourbon? The wheel will show you exactly the cocktail that will meet your needs. The drinks run from £8.50, with the most expensive hitting close to £13 if I remember correctly. There are new takes on classics, some inventive twists on what a cocktail can be, and even alcoholic milkshakes. Depending on how busy the bar is, the cocktails can take some time as the bartenders tend to craft several drinks at a time. The quality of the cocktails is very good, but perhaps not as great as some of the other well known craft cocktail bars, including some of the Bitters N' Twisted venues. The French 75 for example, tastes good, not great, with too much of an emphasis on sour lemon notes that I wouldn't expect at other bars. Some of the preparation quirks can be forgiven however, when Be At One goes out of their way to offer discounts to customers. There is a regular happy hour (can't remember the exact times) with 2 for 1 cocktails. If you download their official app, you can extend the happy hour even longer. There is also a random cocktail for £5 offer that you can use once per day. On my first attempt, I landed an Aviation that was well made and delicious. While the performance theatre present at Be At One may not be everyone's bag, the deals and service will make it a destination of mine while waiting on a train, or a end to a long night.

I ve been really impressed on the two occasions I've visited Be at One bar so far. It's right next to New St station so handy for a post work drink or a cheeky one before the last train home! You walk down the stairs into a dark neon lit bar, it's well set out with booths and an area for dancing but it's one of those places where it could be 2pm or 2am...as there is no natural light! But that means you can party at pretty much any hour! And the disco tracks are being played to get the party started! I couldn't help shake my ass while ordered a cocktail! I tried the killing Monica cocktail which was sharp with rhubarb. On another occasion I tried the mojito which was we balanced and the woo woo which was sweet with peach. There is a wheel at the front of the menu and I d suggest using this to pick what you fancy - i e a sour drink or a sweet drunk etc. There s a daily hour hour ( well it's usually a few hours long) so check on line. You can also extend the happy hour sun - thurs by downloading the app. You can also use the app to find out what the appventurous cocktail is for that day! I lucked out with a pisco sour which wasn't as good as at Ceviche but did the job for a £5. I ve enjoyed the atmosphere, cheeky bar tenders, tunes & array of 150 cocktails so much that I've reserved a space for my hen do there. I did it on line and it was very easy, and just paid a £50 deposit.

Actually busier than it looks!

Ok I give this place 4 stars, but I'm still not quite sure it's my kind of place. I think we are spoilt for choice in Birmingham now! The bar has a very small doorway just opposite new street, where the old snooker club used to be. Thankfully there is a doorman though, as bars near stations can sometimes struck unsavoury types (lol!). Despite being down in a basement, it's surprisingly airy and has plenty of room. I like the fact the bar is in the centre of the room. The atmosphere is really buzzing and fun. The music is fairly cheesy but mostly it's ok (if a little loud!-it's not a club afterall!). The cocktails are the main event here however and they are fantastic! As well as the classics there are some really different and original mixes too. Prices are are £8, but if you go before 7pm it's 2-4-1 so well worth it! Gonna try and work my way through the list!;)

I have yet to try the food, so this review is reflective of the cocktails. The bar staff here are expert craftsmen. Every cocktail is made to perfection. The menu rotates seasonally, so enjoy a favorite until you pick a new favorite. If you like gin, this is the place for you. There is more gin on offer than I've ever seen in one place before. The upstairs even boasts a gin lounge with yet more selection. The deliciousness is in the details. Jekyll & Hyde made use of fun flavored alcohols, syrups, juices, herbs and spices. Each cocktail is shaken, stirred or muddled to be an explosion of flavor in your mouth and served up in a perfectly paired glass to suit. My first favorite drink here was called the Puss Puss Meow Meow. Served in a delicate tea cup, this drink was sweetie cute and oh so yummy. A fruity, fragrant concoction with floral gin notes. On the new menu I'm smitten with Strawberry Laces - served up with little twizzles of strawberry laces. Absolutely delicious. Also check out the French Connection - a warming drink which makes use of saffron gin and cinnamon. It tastes like a Sunday afternoon drifting through the warm countryside. The decor is well thought out and the tables and stools are adjustable for a pair or large group. It looks like a typical pub outside and is anything but inside.

The staff in here are excellent. I asked them to make me a non-alcoholic cocktail last night and was whipped up a gem for the eyes and tastebuds. However, again, if you don't get here in Happy Hour and want a cocktail - you're paying from £6.00+ - so not a cheap option for a night out. Last time I ate here (Booking is a must by the way, if you want to eat!), I had the Sea bass with Sanphire - which was fabulous. The Ginger cake dessert was lovely too. The lunch menu is quite reasonable (and there is a loyalty card scheme - meaning you can earn a free lunch if you eat out regularly). A MUST for Gin fans. Good for a night out with the girls or the start of a big night out. Aim for Happy Hour and keep in mind Thursday/Friday/Saturday is VERY busy (but - top tip - you can reserve tables in advance).

Honestly I would rate the food itself 3 stars, but we had a nice time and the service was good. However if looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, I would recommend to dine elsewhere. The restaurant is split into two sections across two floors: Yin (lower) and Yang (upper). Yin is the main part of the restaurant with artificial cherry blossoms and paintings. Yang has more of a classy feel. We sat at a booth by the cherry blossoms in Yin, which has lighting that poses a challenge for photos. We opted in for the Modern Sharing Tasting Menu priced at £70 per person. Over the timespan of 2.5 hours, three waves of courses were served. I included the regular prices from the à la carte menu. Assuming the portions were the same, the total was £148.45 compared to £140 for the two of us, so not a bad deal to sample a variety. Wave One: two Small Plates dishes ----- Tuna Sashimi Wontons: sesame, soy and avocado (£12.50). The fish was fresh and the shell was crisp, but the sauce was too heavy. ----- 1/2 Aromatic Duck Pancakes: Szechuan, cucumber and spring onion (£26). Duck was overcooked and dry. Accompaniments were standard. ----- Wave Two: two Large Plates and two Rice, Noodles and Vegetables dishes ----- Caramel Soy Aged Beef Fillet: UK premium aged beef, shiitake, ginger and asparagus (7oz for £39). Cook of the beef was adequate, although rather tough to chew. ----- Char Siu Honey Glazed Monkfish: morning glory, caramel orange and pickled cucumber (£33.95). An interesting choice of meat to marinate in char siu sauce. Fish was not juicy but it was good. ----- Tenderstem Broccoli: black sesame and truffle (£8). Vegetables were soft, although the black sesame paste was a bit odd. ----- Duck Egg and Chinese Sausage Fried Rice (£8). A bit oily but otherwise standard fried rice. ----- Wave Three: two Dessert dishes ----- Cherry Blossom: white chocolate, cherry and candyfloss (£11.50). Another dish that is presented with fog. The server allowed the request to swap this with the Banana Fritters (£9) at no extra charge. The chocolate tree and base was rich and smooth. ----- White Chocolate Dragon Egg: coconut, passionfruit and mango (£9.50). We liked the presentation of the dragon egg. Dessert itself was fruity and tasty. ----- In addition, two drinks were ordered. ----- Eastern Dragon: 135 East Gin, raspberry and apple (£18). Pricey but I quite liked the drink, which was sweet and light on alcohol. It also came served in a decorative, lit box a full of fog. ----- Hidden Dragon: mint, ginger and agave (£6). ----- Our reservation was for 6 PM on a Wednesday, and were easily seated when arriving an hour early as the restaurant was empty. Tables quickly filled shortly after but the restaurant has ample seating to accommodate walk-ins. A bottle of sparkling water costs £4.50 and a 10% service charge is added to the bill. The recommended dress code is smart casual, but I did spot people wearing plain solid-colored shirts.

The music is great and it generally has a friendly atmosphere- though not always, depending on what night you're there. There are two levels- a tiki bar upstairs and a more rock'n'roll bar downstairs. The tiki cocktails are really strong and I love the design. There's a bit more room up there too for dancing. I've had so many great nights here over the years, including birthdays, New Year, pre-old Snobs cocktails and just random 'why not' nights. The menu changes regularly and the prices are reasonable. I've always found staff friendly but I feel they've become friendlier as time has gone on. Service has also got quicker. I still always have a good night at Island Bar, and appreciate what it did for Brum's cocktail scene.
