Tastings sign~

I'm sure everyone in the local population has heard of this liquor store. Although the location is not the most convenient personally, several things make this particular outlet stick out. - large large floor space. - wide selection of booze (not that it matters to me as I only look at certain parts), for the wine connoisseurs out there. - tastings! Yes, if you show up on certain days, you get to stuff your face on appies while drinking on the government's tab. Might as well get some return on your tax dollars. Parking is generally decent, but if you go during peak hours (such as a Friday night) it's a war zone. There is parking available on BOTH sides of the store.

I am amazed at how big this liquor store is. I am not a big fan of drinking. But it's good to see all alcohol from around the wild in one place. Very friendly staff. Not to mention lots of parking in the parking lot.

This location is a Flagship liquor store. What the heck is that, you ask? It's the bomb!!! It's an absolutely massive location with so much selection. The other huge benefit of this location is that they host events here. I decided to check out a wine tasting and evening with some Okanagan winemakers. The tickets were $20 - but turned out to be worth every penny. For starters, it was hosted in a special tasting room/kitchen that they have in the back of the store. We were given seven different wines and each table had a massive platter of cheese, crackers and fruit. At the end of the evening, the staff got us paper plates and almost insisted that we all take the leftover cheese home! I swear we got our money back in cheese, which is totally cool with me. In addition to the great value, the evening was well carried out and informative. The winemakers that attended were really open to sharing their secrets with us and answering any questions. The liquor store staff that hosted the night were also very knowledgeable about wines and food pairings. I would recommend checking out this location for shopping and scoop up one of their events calendars. I hope when the new SkyTrain starts running there's a stop right outside this location!

Expensive drink.

When I got off the bus and so Granville I thought oh there used to be a government liquor store here surely the goodness serious at least a private one nearby. And so I found Jaks and it was a wonderful experience . Great selection, more like a baby LCB than a wine store or some of the other liquor Outlets just basically have a lineup of basically overly marked up pricing. I just drink something like polarize or silent Sam with low-cal cranberry juice on the Rocks but as a martini. I was able to purchase four bottles and the only markup was two bucks . Two bucks. After just paying almost $10 more for a 26 year Alberta vodka. And they actually wanted $44 for $28 bottle of Absolute Vodka. Upmarket gouging never sits well with me. So, while I still mostly by my vodka at a government store, when I want to just go out and have a lovely afternoon and bring home some wine and some vodka i zoom up from my little corner of Yale town by bus to the south Granville District and pick up my supplies . Thanks guys , you are doing a great service to us Vancouver rights and I for one I'm delighted and happy to support you.

I'm a fan since this place meets all 2 criteria I have: 1) close to the hotel (just a block away…read morefrom the Holiday Inn) and 2) has screw top wines! I don't travel with a wine opener, so being able to pick up a bottle that's a screw top is very convenient. This store was clean and well organized. The store is small but packs a lot of selection. There is a wine section in the back that offered bottle of reds between $10-$20. I wasn't looking for anything fancy, so the options were right up my alley. I went with a bottle of Cono Sur Bicicleta, a Cabernet Sauvignon (Wine of Chile 2012) for $14. It's medium-bodied, dry and fruity. You might find it cheaper at LCBO, but not by much. The label reads: A deep plum red with aromas of red fruit, cassis, black plums, and soft spices, together with a fruity, structured palate. Goes well with strong cheese, hearty stews and grilled cuts of beef.

They have a big bank of fridges with all the usual suspects ready for your enjoyment. The staff is friendly and they check you through quickly, even if there's a line up on Friday evening. However, it's not a great place to buy wine. The selection is all pretty cheap stuff - and not the cheap stuff that was chosen wisely because they're diamonds in the rough. Most of the wines here are cheap and taste like it. I'm a girl who's always shopping for a delicious bottle for under $15, so I've drank my share of cheap wines. I have my favourites and they aren't for sale here. The do accept bottle returns in the back. So if you live near here you can recycle up to 24 bottles in a visit.

After checking their system records, they told me it was out of stock. I asked if they could recommend something similar. The person working said he knew nothing about wines and would get someone to help me. Kind of a shocker but maybe he was new? After 5 minutes of waiting (with no one else in the store), someone finally walked up. I repeated my earlier statement and he picked up some $75 bottle of wine and told me it was similar. I asked him to tell me more about the wine and he pulled some app off his phone to tell me something about raspberries. I claimed I didn't think it was my friends taste and he started arguing with me about how the app is never wrong and that is exactly what the wine tastes like according to the app. I tried to explain I wasn't arguing about how the wine tastes, but instead saying I didn't think my friends would like it. While he was trying to find something else that might suit me, I saw some bottles of Hess on the shelf and grabbed one and got out of there as quickly as I could. Not only was the wine much more expensive than my local liquor store but going in there was a painful experience. I will never step foot in there again. Just an awful experience.
