That year, they finished in second place in the MLS Western Conference, third place overall, and advanced to the Conference Semifinals where they lost to the eventual MLS Cup champions and their longtime rivals, the Portland Timbers. The Whitecaps play in BC Place (opened 1983; renovated 2009, 2011), located in the heart of Vancouver, just on the north side of False Creek, downtown. With an official seating capacity of 22,120, Whitecap games are well-attended with an average annual attendance of 21,143 over the last five years (95.6% average capacity). Despite lackluster results on the pitch, Vancouver fans come out to support and it's not surprising given how popular MLS has become, particularly with in-person attendance, over the years. FYI, BC Place was the main stadium for the 2010 Winter Olympics. A couple of prolific former Whitecaps include Brazilian forward Camilo Sanvezzo (a.k.a. "Camilo"), Chilean midfielder Pedro Morales, and Danish goalkeeper David Ousted. To date, Camilo and Morales have been Vancouver's top two goalscorers at 43 and 29 goals, respectively. Morales is actually tied for second with fellow midfielder and teammate for two seasons (2015-16), Uruguayan Cristian Techera. Ousted, who played for Vancouver from 2013-17, is tied for the third-most appearances with the team. He holds the team records for most wins, clean sheets, and saves, all coming in the fruitful 2014-15 era. Uniquely, in 2020, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and Canadian quarantine rules, the Whitecaps played their remaining home games at Providence Park in Portland, Oregon. Providence Park is home to the aforementioned Timbers, one of the Whitecaps' biggest rivals. It was nice of the Timbers to host the Whitecaps during this global crisis.

YES, I invaded The Rogers Arena and bared witness to this event. Saturday will be looked back upon as a moment that helped the rivalry spark, when the NUCKS watched a three-goal lead disappear in the final five minutes of regulation, gave up a breakaway game-winner in overtime and left Rogers Arena echoing with faint chants of "Let's Go Kraken." Earlier in the day I met my friend at the gift shop and shared lunch to get ready for the game, yet it wasn't much of a game for me until final 5 minutes when Canucks tanked righted before my eyes and placing a huge smile on my face. Seeing Canucks lose on home ice is what I wanted to see yet things looked grim for over 55 minutes however miracles happen. The look on all the fans & NUCKS supporters was priceless when Kraken Vince Dunn thundered in the overtime goal... VANCOUVER CANUCKS you provided me with a wonderful first time experience seeing my team on your home ice & then self destructing. BRAVO , I'll never forget it !

The Vancouver Canucks are among the NHL's oldest teams, but they're not one of the Original Six nor…read morewere they one of the five teams added during the league's first expansion in 1967. They joined, along with the Buffalo Sabres, in 1970. Since then, the Canucks have been Canada's westernmost NHL team and the only one in British Columbia. Despite decades of history, Vancouver has never won the Stanley Cup. Coincidentally, the team is tied with Buffalo for being the two oldest in the league to not win the Cup. The Canucks have reached the Stanley Cup Finals three times (1982, 1994, 2011) which is one more time than the Sabres (1975, 1999). The Canucks also won back-to-back Presidents' Trophies, for having the best regular season record, in 2011 (117 points) and 2012 (111 points, lockout-shortened season). These were Vancouver's best years in recent memory and they occurred when former player Mike Gillis was general manager (2008-2014). Gillis orchestrated numerous deals that led to those successful seasons including retaining star twins Daniel (leftwing) and Henrik Sedin (center) and Robert Luongo (goaltender). Both Henrik Sedin (2010-2018) and Luongo (2008-2010) served as team captains. The Sedin twins played their entire NHL careers in Vancouver (18 seasons, 2000-2018) and had their numbers retired in 2020. No. 22 for Daniel and No. 33 for Henrik. The Sedin twins lead the franchise, 1-2, all-time, in points, assists, and games played. In addition, Daniel Sedin is the franchise leader in goals (393) including game-winning (86) and power-play (138) goals. Among Canucks goalies all time, Luongo has the most wins (252) and shutouts (38). All three of these guys played in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals which drew high ratings. The Canucks lost to the Boston Bruins, 4-3, in a series that went the distance. Vancouver had home ice advantage and they needed it -- the team played noticeably worse on the road. In the three games played in Boston, the Canucks averaged only 1.00 goal per game as opposed to 1.25 goals per game at home (not great either). Also, former third-string goalie Cory Schneider ended up replacing Luongo in two of those road games, Games 4 and 6. The Canucks set a league-low record in those 2011 Finals: least goals scored by any team in a seven-game series (8). The Canucks currently play at Rogers Arena, also known as "The Garage" for when the venue was named General Motors Place (1995-2010). This is the same arena - GM Place - that the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies (1995-2001) played in. Both the Canucks and the Grizzlies were the first teams to play in the arena when it opened in 1995. Since 2012, it's had a seating capacity of 18,910 for Canucks games, comparable to most other NHL arenas today. The Garage is located next to BC Place and Costco on the east side of downtown.

I've been to many other "character" minor league stadiums and Nat Bailey Stadium is middle of the road - it was below par before the recent renovations. It's difficult to really do too much more to the stadium because of the logistical limitations - BUT let's get on with my actual ball game experience here. This is more than something from memory without any substance - yes that is a barb at Jenni O. It was Japanese Heritage night tonight at the "Nat" so there were a good deal of JCs in the seats. Good crowd and we sat in section 2 - after being given a bunch of free tickets. There were folks sitting in our bleacher seats so we just went two rows back to take a seat - only to be displaced by the actual ticketholders of that row in the fourth inning, so we went 10 rows down to another row to settle for the rest of the game. Baseball games are really about the experience of being there, taking in the great weather, watching the occasional good play, watching the sights around (birds, moon, people), being in the presence of good company, and having that ball park food. All that was there tonight, EXCEPT for the food. Holy S#$%! What planet did they pull those astronomical concessions prices from?!? It's like they took movie concession prices and added $1 to everything. Here's the run down of my not so satisfying buy (except for the mildly tasty foot long): - Chicken strips with overdone fries = $8.75 - Hot dog with overdone fries = $8.50 - 2 x Sprites (about a normal medium fountain drink) = 2 x $3.75 = $7.50 - Footlong hot dog = $6.75 I felt violated. Not just the price, but the taste. Even the cashier who took my order agreed with my comments of it being a rip off. But I suppose they have to make their money somewhere. This is one of those few places where your food could cost you more than the actual tickets if you take your family. Ordinarily I would take a star off for that, but my tickets were free so I've softened the blow somewhat. I do like what they've done with the front parking lot (doesn't hurt that the new 2010 curling facility is next door), with the art on the outside of the stadium and the revamped concession area. I know this is an old park, but it would be nice to have a big scoreboard that included such things as the stats of the player up to bat, etc. I also like the parking situation - $5 is very reasonable to par right behind the stadium. I'm just happy that we sat on the section 2 side so as not to be staring into the sun most of the game. As a random sidenote the American anthem singer was pretty bad, but the best part was his hand gesturing throughout his rendition.
