I was adamant that given the compact-wooden-pod nature of the place, I should only go in extreme weather conditions in order to make the trip all the more exciting. In beloved but rainy Manchester, blue-skies and sunshine qualifies as extreme conditions. As such, during a sunny June Sunday, I seized the opportunity to sip on a 'Grindsmith' flat white, with sunshine beaming through the open façade (almost entirely made of glass) - I was not disappointed. An excellent decision on my part to go when sunny and excellent brewing skills from Grindsmith as far as kick-ass flat white's are concerned. Grindsmith offers little when it comes to food, there was a very small selection of baked goods but they looked rustic and appealing. I wasn't expecting an extensive food menu, nor was I disappointed by its lack. What is pretty darn cool however, is that Grindsmith stock 'Ginger's Comfort Emporium' ice-cream - absolutely the best ice-cream I have ever tasted! (See my review of the cafe in Affleks palace) Marry this with a Grindsmith espresso and you've got an Affogato sent directly from heaven. £3 well spent I'd say - a delightful weekend treat. Take a walk to Greengate Square. Look, I know the Premiere Inn there is really ugly and a bit of an off-putter, but once inside Grindsmith's coffee haven, you'll forget such an architectural disaster ever happened. You can read more of what I have to say about Grindsmith (and other places) on my new blog: http://thehungrygiraffe.blogspot.co.uk/2014/07/grindsmith-espresso-and-brewbar.html

Walking past one day Neil C. and I were ravenous (as per usual) and decided to pop in and give it a try, and I'm so very glad we did. They haven't been open long, maybe around 6 months or so now, so definitely a newcomer to the area, they specialise in real Italian coffee and it's good, very very good. I ate their homemade Lasagne and it was by far the best Lasagne I have tasted in Manchester - from all the Italian restaurants combined. This was 'proper' lasagne. Not dripping in sauce, the meat tender and vegetables soft. It had the best flavours and I couldn't wait to thank the lady when she emerged from their tiny kitchen. If you haven't been to Lupo it's a MUST try!

Located on Chapel Street, one of the next spots for huge development in Manchester, this is set to prime real estate and everyone's favourite local. Our first visit was for lunch during the week - the food is served quickly and you know it's fresh, so there's plenty of time for a delicious but efficient meal. The two main dishes change on a daily basis (check their Facebook and Instagram for daily updates) so you're guaranteed something different on each visit. We shared a plate of rigatoni with crumbled sausage & yellow tomato and some of the bruschetta, topped with seasoned tomatoes. Everything was really good and the pasta cooked perfectly al dente. The portions weren't overwhelming and you can tell everything's had real care put into it. We later visited for a Saturday breakfast when my parents were visiting. There were some communication issues this time - some of the menu displayed as breakfast dishes were actually mislabelled and not available, and two of the breakfasts came with salmon instead of ham - but everything was dealt with quickly (and with lots of apologies.) There's a cooler with drinks by the entrance, but tap water is provided on the tables for free, and there's an extensive coffee menu. The sweet dishes on the counter are worth a peruse if you have a sweet tooth; both the Nutella tart and jam topped muffin I've had have hit the spot. Really worth knowing about if you want to try something new and feel like you're part of the Chapel Street neighbourhood.

It's quite a large space with a few tables placed near the counter area. The staff in here were immediately so friendly! And I entered into a conversion with the guy behind the coffee counter as to what they're all about. The product of a kickstarter, they've only been open less than a week and the guys are making it their mission to sell the best coffee around and put all the profits back into the community. Excellent. I ordered my latte and grabbed a seat. They have a separate creative working and meeting space that is completely free to use and benefits from free, very fast, wifi. You don't even have to buy anything if you don't want to - but surely nobody is that mean! The coffee was excellent - so i'll be back soon to try their menu of salads and sandwiches! It is one of the few coffee shops at this side of Media City, without heading to the other side of the water at the Lowry Outlet where there is a Costa and a couple more bars and restaurants (Lime Bar, Costa etc). The store looks good and they had a nice selection of both indoor and outdoor seating and hot soups, including a festive soup which sounded rather nice. I do feel the staff weren't as good as other Pret stores though and the sandwich range seemed really depleted for regular standards, let alone gluten-free which they had none of. This is still a pretty nice, good-looking store in a useful, cool location within Manchester's Media City even though it does have a few flaws with cold food selection and the staff. 3*

The location gives it plenty of footfall and it's surrounded by other restaurant chains. I only wanted a coffee and I barely got much chance to study the menu as a server with nothing to do kept cajoling me and waving at me to take my order. I had to tell the dear chap to try to calm down and to think of his blood-pressure, but to no avail. I ordered a regular sized cappuccino - organic coffee beans apparently - and £2.25 into a paper take-away cup. I had thought soup but if they had soup it wasn't obvious to me. It had a few tables outside on the concourse, but the autumn chill meant I opted just to keep on meandering.
