The Columbia Drive Bridge on Davis Islands works as a quiet little gateway that still carries the…read moreimprint of its 1920s origins, and because it serves as a one way entrance onto the island it shapes the daily flow in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental, almost like the planners wanted visitors to slow down and understand they were crossing into a distinct neighborhood. The bridge came out of that early land‑boom moment when Tampa was reshaping its shoreline and selling the idea of Mediterranean‑inspired living on newly created land, and even though the bridge is modest it reflects the architectural language of the period with its low concrete profile, simple railings, and proportions that match the residential scale around it. Nothing about it is flashy, but that restraint is part of the charm because it ties directly back to the original Davis Islands vision where the architecture was meant to feel cohesive and quietly elegant, and the bridge still reads as part of that early fabric today, a small structure with a long memory that continues to guide people onto the island in the same steady pattern it has followed for generations. I once worked near here, actually at a few places, all walking distance, and this is the post office I would use. I can't comment on how it functions as a post office now, but as a bit of "local flavor" it's pretty cool. I say this for two reasons. One is the obvious cool factor. Built in the Mediterranean Revival style and completed on September 27, 1917, it's a throwback to a different era. The lines and curves of this building are like no other post office that I know of. Sam H. uploaded a good series of pictures showing off the beauty of this post office. The other reason it has a bit of local flavor is for the rather seedy crowd that seems to gather. A sign warns that if you are not here on post office business, the police are authorized to act as agents for the post office and remove trespassers. I can't imagine what led to the need for that sign (proximity to Williams Park maybe?), but since it's open air, it's means access to the PO boxes is also pretty easy, and 24 hours. No other 24 services exist though. In the north west corner of the open air part a flight of stairs leads up to the historic museum. I did not have a chance to confirm that it's still in operation, but if you are a post office aficionado, it may be worth a look. On April 4, 1975, this post office was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. If people slow down a bit, and hit the Pinellas trail, the old rail line bulges west just north of Curlew and harkens back to a more simple time. The first home built here was in 1875, and as more folks settled in Florida during the golden citrus years, this village saw sleepy prosperity with its orange groves and fishing wharfs buzzing with activity. Tampa Road, which originated here, was the first paved road leading into Tampa, directly connecting the big city with Oldsmar, Dundein, Palm Harbor and Ozona. Things are obviously much different now. The village is quiet, laid back and the vibe is a kin to Cedar Key on a Monday night. They've got their own post office, a BBQ joint, pizzeria, pub and plenty of coastal property to catch a sunset. Here, with his wife Matilda, they raised their children. McKay was a dominant factor in the upbuilding of Tampa in pioneer times. His shipping lines established the first commercial connection with the outside world. In 1848, he built a courthouse; in 1858, opened the first cattle trade with Cuba, and in 1859, was elected mayor. This last time I had a confirmed 8:45 am appt for my husband's passport and was waiting patiently in line. I have severe back injury that makes my left leg feel as if it is on fire when I stand for too long so I made sure to make an appt to accommodate that. A wealthy looking women with her children walked in after us and the worker David asked them do they have an appt. They said yes 9am he said when is your appt. I said 8:45. He said I dont even have that appt written down here. I said I have proof confirmation on my phone. He made my husband run out to car to get my proof. I showed him the confirmation on my phone and he continued to argue with me saying he doesnt have it. Then he proceeded to take the woman who had an appt after mine before me. I pleaded with him stating I have a disability and am in alot of pain right now. By this time it felt like I was standing on broken glass and my whole leg was on fire. He continued to take the rich looking women and her family infront of me. The manager watched the whole thing transpire and didnt say a thing to help the situation. Clearly the worker David and his manager cater to rich people at this establishment and dont honor appts made. I feel discriminated against to be completely honest. Finally after waiting a while longer Seamus came to my rescue and started our passport application I am soo disappointed that people still treat disabled people like this in 2026. I definitely wasnt dressed up to run an errand I was wearing leggings and a T shirt. I guess normal people dont matter here only the rich locals.
