I don't know that downing one of these right before getting on the ferry was the best choice, but probably most people are more forward-thinking than my childlike self. Other than that the place was fine but unstandoutish. It is conveniently placed at the downtown ferry terminal so a handy spot to pop in for a coffee or a snack. It faces Quay Street and also has more seating upstairs. There's an array of slices and other such things at the counter as well.

And with its prime location to my office, I find that (far too often!) my colleagues and I will exchange glances right around morning tea time. We're all on the same page, clearly. Although I don't consider myself a "coffee drinker," I have fallen for Reslau's talent in the espresso department. They serve Allpress - and there's never a bitter aftertaste (I usually go with the half strength flat white because I'm a wuss and can't handle extra strong espresso). The baristas are lovely as well -- and although they always seem to be under the gun, they never manage to slip up in delivery of a perfect brew :) Reslau also carries a wide variety of freshly baked goods (my colleagues RAVE about their almond croissants and chocolate afghans [I've been trying to be good]). Tip: the space (corridor?) is rather tiny which could induce bouts of claustrophobia during peak times. You've been warned.

The staff are always lovely but almost have a mutual understanding that I'm there for some much needed introvert time and leave me be once I've ordered. Its tiny size means it's not really good for a business meeting, that is unless you want to include thw whole cafe in your brainstorm, but it is a nice place for when your alone. It's one of the only good cafes in town (in my opinion) and is good for a takeaway coffee, lazy brunch, a quiet place to sit, or just for when you need somewhere to kill the time.

So you think the place looks busy or is it really just the fact that it is about 1.5m wide and 4m deep? Very small and the way you order is a bit odd. You just sort of end up in the way or staff and other people as both sides are lined with narrow benches and stools and the coffee machine and cabinets are on the right so you have to stand in the middle of it all. Even though they have iPads, just take your coffee and food away. I suspect that Grind on High is more of a take out place anyway. The coffee was not good. I had a long black, it was mostly water, I didn't drink it all and my friend was unimpressed. We never went back, I don't see what the big deal is.

The breakfast menu is quite euro. Avo, boiled eggs, proscuitto and tomato is as cooked a breakfast as you'll get! For lunch the chicken salad is to die for, succulent poached chicken, sliced with mesculin salad, avo, almonds and a yummy creamy dressing. They have a huge range of sandwiches and unlike true italian styles these are very gourmet. The chicken and fennel, three cheese and pumpkin are among my favourites. They also do a really good soup but quite expenny at $11.90 a pop. There's lots of parking right outside and it has a really urban feel. Highly recommend for lunch or breakfast on the run.

Anyway, this week I set out to rectify my ignorance by visiting twice, first with my Yelp amigo, Kathy L and then again the following day. The café is in a pretty unexpected place, right next to the North Shore Events Centre. The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the smell of freshly roasted beans. I've said it once and I'll say it again - cafés that roast their own beans make consistently good coffee. I mean, that's just my experience but I reckon 99% of the time it holds true. The Coffee Lab is no exception. Here you get to choose your own beans from their three grinders. We took the advice of the barista and went Sumatran, who told us "it had a hint of vanilla and is good served black." Perfect. Could my unrefined coffee palate taste the hint of vanilla, no, but was the coffee strong and silky smooth - yes. In fact, it was so delicious that I ordered the same thing the next day. I am yet to try their food but the slices look off the chain - just like nana used to make them! No doubt, I'll be back soon.
