Or perhaps they used to rent space there when the art scene was priced out of Queen and Bathurst, and are likely to be soon priced out of Queen and Ossington- as the gentrification continues. Nonetheless, Ossington needed some culture to take in while the Tequila, wine and beer (Reposado, Salt and Crooked Star respectively) wear off from a night/afternoon of imbibing. I'm hoping to attend a wine from a box and cheese opening one of these days, but until then I'm popping in when they are open and fogging up the windows from outside when I peak in and they are closed.

The neighbourhood is ghetto...it's the equivalent to having a liquor store in the middle of Forest Hill. I got wind of a Chinese artist's exhibition, so I hopped on the street-car and away we go! The further East I travelled on Queen, the tighter I clinched onto my wallet. I got off at a part of town I've never been before, and when I found the gallery I was relieved. The Hangman Artist Gallery is a one&a-half level space of corner store sized floor space. The reception occupied a quarter of the first floor, and the second floor was storage. I was greeted by the friendly ladies behind the counter, and after I explained that I was here to videotape some of their exhibits, I was allowed to do so with no pressure. A humble real estate, but considering where it was in town it was a very calm environment. The brick walls complimented the artwork. It was nice This gallery often hosts social functions for opening exhibits, and from the photos it doesn't look too shabby. Some useless information for the gallery: It is apart of the Artist Network..whatever that is. There are plenty of brochures and postcards of upcoming events available at the gallery, the staff are happy to provide any assistance. Not much to say about such a simple venue. The art were selling anywhere from $700-2500 a piece. The artwork in particular I was viewing were traditional Chinese painting with folklore characters holding luxury retail brand items. Slightly amusing. If you want to see more, check out the first two minutes of this video I posted on youtube. It was my first youtube upload! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSvZ5qioUQE&feature=plcp There's nowhere to actually play hangman...just in case you were curious.

I saw a little coat room and there was just enough space in the entrance way for a table with buttons and fliers before you walked into the rest of the space. The adjoining room is just a small rectangle but large enough for large scale work and sculpture. I tend to like small galleries for one of two reasons, they either force you to focus on one or two artists or rotate their collections often. Many small galleries do both which means you're never quite sure what you'll find but it's likely that you will find something you enjoy more often. I'm looking forward to going back and checking out more shows here.

I attended my first solo art exhibit featuring the talented Gary Taxali. Walking in, I had no idea…read morewho this "so called very famous artist" was. But as soon as I saw his pieces, I had this feeling of familiarity come over me. ILLUSTRATIONS Taxali has this very unique style (check out pics). I had no idea where I recognized his work from but recognizing the fact that I recognize his works speaks volumes. We all know how difficult it is for artists to pave some sort of career in this capitalistic world. Apparently though, Taxali has had some success. Not realizing until after I left the exhibit is when I found out that Taxali has created illustrations for magazines such as Rolling stones, Newsweek, The New York times, and GQ. Which is why I recognized his illustrations. I know how "artists" like to ponder about the meaning of each illustration but what I would have liked to have seen was a description of the article, or at least the title of the article so we could put the illustration in context. GARY TAXALI I was able to meet Gary Taxali. He wasn't camera shy at all so we took some pictures, which was a nice souvenir. One of the things that kind of bothered me was the way he interacted with me and my friend. I understand he was busy greeting all his friends however just imagine if I was a fan, a potential employer, or an interested buyer....taking no interest in me or asking whether I enjoyed the exhibit is poor business sense and poor character. Maybe I just caught him on an off moment. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. FOOD Taxali paid hommage to his Indian roots by serving samosas. As most of you know, I don't have a very strong stomach when it comes to bad food. I had one samosa and in about half an hour, I wasn't feeling to well. I don't know if the samosa was bad (spoiled ingredients) or whether I'm allergic to something in that particular samosa (i have samosas all the time) but boy did I have to use the bathroom badly. This has no reflection on Taxali. How would he have known that the food was bad? I blame it on his management for not reading Yelp reviews prior to hiring that caterer! ENVIRONMENT The Narwhal Art Project was cozy and chic. The lighting was absolutely perfect highlighting all his pieces. The place was constantly crowded for the full 2 hours I was present. It was a bit warm to say the least but it just goes to show how the popularity of this artist. A great first experience and a benchmark for future exhibits. I look forward to attending more art shows

Sheila helped me pick out a frame that would work with the photo. When it was ready a few days later I was excited to hang it on my wall. However, I didn't trust myself to hang a picture of that size. After searching unsuccessfully online for a picture hanging service, I called the studio to ask whether they had a recommendation for someone who could do it. Sheila recognized me when I called and said she and her husband would come hang it for me! They came out to my condo and brought all the tools and hardware to hang it on the wall. They even thanked me for giving them space on my wall for their art. The picture looks great. I'm so thrilled with my art and the way Sheila and John really went above and beyond.
