My PT deserves a 9/10 and I wish I could leave him a direct review. He was excellent except for forgetting to get me on the PhysiApp. My experience of the overall environment, however, was not great. I did over 12 PT sessions here and over time it became clear to me that the organization prioritizes profit over customer experience. The most poignant example of this was that I only had my PT's full attention for 33% of my time with him because the organization booked appointments overlapping with the first and last 15 minutes. I have done PT sessions at MGH and elsewhere and did not experience this over-booking. My worst experience was related to an office admin harassing me about calling my insurance companies because my insurance had changed. I felt so ignored and uncomfortable that I just hung up the phone. I also had many negative experiences while doing PT because some of the other PTs were talking too much about their personal lives. One PT in particular was almost non-stop talking every time I was there, going on about her commute to work and how much she spent on show tickets and sometimes engaging in conversation about organizational HR matters that were not appropriate for patients to hear. While I don't mind some friendly conversation and appreciate an upbeat atmosphere, it is important to maintain a professional work environment where patients can focus on their exercises without distractions. read more

I went to Bay State (both Somerville and Cambridge) for issues with my hip. I saw a few different therapists, but primarily Ben. I was pretty discouraged going in and for the first few weeks, feeling like the issues were just age, but Ben kept encouraging me to stick with it and a couple of months later, I was healed!! I could walk normally again without pain, and do all the simple things that had become so difficult. The team there was funny, supportive, and very knowlegable. The staff here has no warm rapport either with each other or with their clients. There's not much eye contact. Exercises are assigned (not explained) and then the staff member leaves you. My experience at baystate showed me that it is important to choose the right pt. The pts at this place are fresh out of school. A family friend first recommended Baystate Physical Therapy in Arlington to me while I was in high school. I suffered with a subluxed shoulder problem. They were very flexible with their scheduling and were able to fit me in before a basketball game to get my shoulder tapped into place. Now as an adult I returned to BSPT with a back injury due to running. Rob was very thorough and interested in helping me learn how I got the injury in the first place. With his help and the help of the other therapists we came up with several exercises that help strengthen my back so I am able to run again. They were all thorough and helped challenge me which led to a quick recovery. I would recommend this facility to anyone! Also I never had a problem with insurance, billing or other paperwork. They did help me to rehab my knees. Hard work. Home exercises have kept me mostly out of pain. Have to agree with other reviewer about the attitudes in the place towards people older than the PTs. Not all the PTs, but some were dismissive and arrogant to more than just me when I was there. They do have some older clientele, and could stand some interpersonal training. Sadly, their ageism helps nobody's health, including the PTs'. read more

I just went to my second PT appt. The therapist seemed knowledgeable but found the atmosphere at Bay State very poor. The therapist was 15 minutes late and I only received about 10 minutes of attention. Then she went to another patient. An assistant worked with me but she kept leaving. Can't take the factory atmosphere at Bay State! I'm leaving if the appt #3 is this chaotic. read more

I have to edit my previous all-positive review of several years ago. The result of my PT was a constriction of movement due, I think to over-emphasis on body mechanics at the expense of tending to the psychological aspects of chronic pain. I have been going to another facility and find a gentler, more personal approach. Also, beware of billing practices. Where I am now, I pay one co-pay for a session. At Bay State, I was constantly getting bills: apparently they bill separately for each exercise performed during a treatment hour. Just something to ask about if you go here. I think they are best with specific injuries and trauma. I recommend that folks read John E. Sarno's Healing Back Pain before engaging in therapies. read more

Ok. The exercises I got for my knees helped which is good. My issues with this place were more about the environment. Everyone who works here is very young/fresh out if school. The depth of knowledge here is nowhere near that of some other PT places I have gone to since leaving Bay State. Additionally, I felt like when I spoke to my PT, she viewed me as a boring old woman(I am in my 40's) who she was tolerating speaking to bc it was part of her job. With all of the one on one time you get with your PT, it is important you establish a good repartee with them but I just felt like I was seen as a social burden who would be so much better if I was younger and cooler. This was a factor in my switching places before my treatment was complete. Also, I did not like that for half the time, you were with the person you knew and then wordlessly passed onto another person you had never met before. Like no warning, no introduction or explanation, no consistency in who you got for person 2. These experiences made my PT experiences feel rather impersonal and made me nit want to return. read more

The physical therapy was okay, not as good as the Lahey Clinic. Went to this one because it was closer but did not realize that the co pay was $40 and not the $15 if I was in my healthcare network. They did not indicate the $40 until treatment #15 when it was related that $40 should be paid. Just received a bill for $405 indicating that they knew all along that the copay was $40... This is very deceptive billing although they apologized for this (apologies are cheap and not at their expense)...they still get their money. But if they said something after the 2nd or 3rd visit, I would have gone somewhere else... So lesson learned is that you can't count on places to be have your best financial interest in mind. Will never go there again. read more

My experience was decidedly mixed. I found the therapists, particularly Rob, to be both pleasant and competent. They helped me work out rotator cuff and plantar fasciitis issues. The administrative staff was also friendly in Arlington, but despite several queries from me they said not to worry about getting further referrals. They would do that at the same time they filed a required progress report. My therapy ended, 3 months went by, and I received a enormous 4 page bill where the charges were hard to understand because the charge for a single visit was broken up into four. Is this kosher? In any case, I was looking at a bill for well over $500, and it was too late to file a request for a retroactive referral. It looked like I was going to be stuck paying the charges that were caused by Baystate simply not filing the required paperwork as they had assured me they would. Unexpectedly, BC-BS became the hero of the case when they walked me through filing an appeal, more or less writing the appeal note for me. All excess charges will be paid as if the appropriate referral had been filed on time. But despite the fact that Baystate knows the BC-BS payment is on the way, they are still sending me threatening bills for the full amount including the balance that they acknowledge is on the way from BC-BS. The business manager, Tracy, won't return my calls. So what do you do with a medical establishment where treatment and med staff are great, but the back office doesn't supply accurate information or follow through on commitments? Their mistakes have cost me over a day's work to get the problem sorted out. And I am still getting aggressive past due notices. I just don't want to waste any more time on this. read more

After my accident, I was really nervous about starting physical therapy. I did not have much motivation and I did not think that it would help me get better. My first appointment at Baystate Physical therapy completely changed everything. Everyone there was extremely attentive to my needs and made me feel really comfortable. They listened to what I had to say and were really patient with me. From the receptionists to the therapists, with their help I was able to motivate myself to get better. I had a great experience at Bay State Physical Therapy in Arlington for recovery from a broken ankle and ORIF surgery. I went in with a walking boot and crutches and came out with my range of motion restored, most of my strength and balance rebuilt, and with personalized recommendations for additional rehab to do on my own. I mostly worked with Rob, who was fantastic and whom I highly recommend. He is warm and personable, very knowledgeable, and thoughtful about treatment recommendations. Typically the sessions would be split between time with the physical therapist and time with the techs/aids who would administer familiar tasks. Jared was especially great in this capacity and will make an excellent physical therapist himself one day. This was my first and only experience with PT, so I have no basis for comparison, but I found the treatment at Bay State was personalized and helpful, the atmosphere was professional and kind, and it was very easy to schedule appointments including after work hours and on the weekend. read more

Being in a great deal of pain, I had hopes for help and empathy. My experience from upon entering was unsettling. The first thing the office staff did was to demand payment up front towards a deductible which they'd "checked on line". I told them I needed to call my insurance co. to gain more info. about this and standard payment procedures. I have never before been asked to pay up front for a medical appt. Then although I was expecting to see a P.T. w/ expertise in my problem, I was given another therapist at the very last minute without any apology. I had researched my assigned P.T. and now was seeing someone for whom I had no information. I did not find her skilled at developing trust(a brand new P.T.), as she was focused on measuring my injury w/ a tape measure, w/ little regard for putting me in pain. I came away w/ no exercises to do, nor did she perform any treatment on me in the whole hour. I went to another P.T. a day later and had a very different experience, coming away w/ some beginning pain relief and home exercises to do to manage my intense pain. This place w/ about 40 locations felt more like a factory that a treatment center. read more

I had a very good experience 2 years ago after shoulder surgery as the PT who was working with me was great and my recovery was quicker than expected. This summer I had the other shoulder operated on and went back to Bay State in Arlington as I was expecting the same great care. It started out fine but after a few weeks the PT dished me off to an intern who needed to be corrected all the time by both me and the PT (when she was paying attention)..my rehab was going very poorly due to the intern and.after a couple of weeks I moved to another Bay State location and explained the problem...the PT at Waltham location was great and my recovery drastically improved once I made that move. The Arlington location is too busy and being dished off to an intern after major shoulder surgery was not appropriate...it wasn't like I had just a hamstring pull. I would have given a far lower rating if not for the other location and my prior experience with Arlington. Go to Waltham...much better care there. read more

I have been a patient of Bay State Physical Therapy off and on for over 10 years. My rehabilitation has addressed back surgery{majorly invasive}, knee surgery, 2 shoulder surgeries, hand and wrist surgery, and 2 hip replacement surgeries. I have chosen this facility because it has answered the call every time, with successful programs and also new knowledge taught to me on how to care for my body. Over the course of all these years I have seen many faces and approaches to get the job done. There have been a couple of speed bumps along the line but nothing to provoke some of the vitriol I have seen released by reviewers. If one comes here expecting to change into a Turkish bathrobe and then be handed a mimosa prior to treatment, You took a wrong turn. You should be going to Canyon Ranch. If one wants to improve their physical health and quality of life due to injuries suffered, then I personally implore you to visit Baystate, especially the Mill Street location. There may be times of bedlam but they are infrequent and do not diminish the purpose of the visit. This is a rehab facility, not a spa. If one comes here with a positive demeanor, not the manners of a fusspot, you will attain your goal by putting in the work and listening to these learned people. It is refreshing to deal with thse PTs, who are passionate with their work and entertaining as well. I have the means to seek and perform Physical therapy at the facility of my choice. I have always chosen and will continue to chose Baystate in Arlington, everytime my body choose's to breakdown. I haven't maintained my 7 handicap in golf all these years with magic. I had an appointment with them in January (2015) and they billed me $10 more than my co-pay was supposed to be. I had to call them over and over and over again so they would refund my money and they kept saying they'd get back to me about this issue. They never got back to me. I had to keep calling and calling. After calling them about 10 times I told them that their inability to refund my money was very unprofessional. They told me they for sure had things straightened out and that it would take a month for me to get a check in the mail for $10. I waited a month and called them AGAIN after the month was over. That's when they gave me their corporate office number for the people who actually do the reimbursing. I called their corporate office and asked them the status of my reimbursement. She told me she saw multiple notes written on my file. She said once she sees my file it can take another month before it's done but because I'd waited so long already, she said she'd put a "rush" on my claim. I asked her how long it was going to take this time and she said probably 2 weeks. That's what she told me yesterday. It is almost May. My appointment was in January. 5 months later and they still can't get their act together. If I had known the magnitude of their disorganization and unprofessional-ism I would've gone somewhere else for my care. $10 isn't a big deal, but if they overcharge EVERY patient $10 for EVERY visit then that's a lot of money they are making in a dishonest manner. I wouldn't recommend this place not because I received bad care but because of the way this business is ran. read more
