There is a really nice courtyard area outside which is great in the summer and has plenty of tables, although it is disappointing that you can't see the canal from the courtyard. In the summer, they do boat trips on a Sunday from this pub to Conisborough, a couple of miles up the canal. It costs about £4-5 if I remember correctly. A really nice day out for the family can include a walk, a boat trip and a meal. Great!

Not a problem, except that area doesn't get table service. Having to join a queue (which started outside the building) to order when you've booked ahead is very poor. Ordered roast dinners two weeks in a row, and both weeks ended up with no stuffing. We raised it the second time and ended up being brought out two cocktail sausages (?) because they ran out. So, they just thought they'd skip sending out what we paid for and see if we noticed? Although there was no table service in our section, someone was available very quickly to tell us to get our puppy down when he dared to sit up on the bench with me. In a dog friendly pub... in the dog friendly section!? The food honestly wasn't bad, but the rest of the experience was poor. Majority of staff seemed very junior, and there weren't enough of them on shift. The car park is also a mess, with cars regularly parking in the middle, blocking you in - even in spite of the subtle threats of a fine if you don't book your plate at the bar. You'd be better off at a 'non dog friendly' pub and make do with sitting outside, honestly.

The pub used to stable racehorses, and is directly opposite the stables of York Racecourse. The interior is styled as a country pub, although Dringhouses is actually a suburb of York, these days, and it felt more suburban than villagey in atmosphere. There's lots of exposed wood and brick fireplaces, and patterned carpet. All very traditional. It's deceptively large - as you wander, more areas seem to open out in front of you, so we had no trouble finding a seat. They serve food, and a lot of other customers were eating here. We didn't sample it, but it looked good, and it arrived quickly. They serve three real ales (Timothy Taylor, Black Sheep and their own brew, which was a very pleasant hoppy bitter - a bit like IPA), which were well kept, and the staff topped my pint up without asking - always a good thing. One of my friends wanted a Campari and lemonade, though, and they didn't sell that, nor her second choice of a Bacardi Breezer. The emphasis seemed to be on beer and wine instead, and she made do with a G&T. Staff seemed friendly and, despite being very busy, they seemed to cope efficiently with the crowd. I'd happily adopt it as my local if I lived in the area.

Yorkshire pudding, gravy, potatoes, and vegetables accompanied the dish. All were delicious and fresh. We enjoyed a nice bottle of malbec. For dessert I highly recommend the Sticky toffee pudding. It is off thr chain! The Millionaire pudding was also good but very sweety. I think it needs more ice cream to balance out the richness of the pudding.
