Great food and beer, especially during happy hour. Nothing beats the flavour of a five dollar pint with chicken wings for a buck. Deliciously authentic buffalo sauce as well. Great atmosphere and staff that are just the right level of attentiveness. Recommended

Our friend loves this place so we decided to have dinner with a group of our friends here. The menu was extensive and i was looking forward to the vegetarian burger with fries. Our friend ordered a bunch of entrees (for some unbeknownst reason!) including the salt and pepper squid, two types of saukraut, mushrooms, wedges and the pretzel as well. I loved the pretzel and the purple saukraut but the rest were forgetable. The veggie burger i had was rather tasteless. I wouldn't come back for the food. Drinks wise, there is a good range of German beers. I had a Jagerbomb which came with a cute little Jagermeister bottle. My friends had shots of the scnapps and a chilli one (which I've had previously) and looks scary but isn't too bad in the end!

    Pig platter...

We went here to celebrate my new job. Increased cash flow means we can pig out more often and at this place, the pigs were lined up like ducks. We ordered a huge share platter for two. Cost $70 but was well worth it. The crackling on the pork belly was perfectly crisp and salty. The schnitzel tender and well crumbed. The sausages had that mmm, maybe we started life in a tin taste and the pork knuckle, well... Obviously they pre-cook these monsters, waiting for the inner city sloshes to roll in after work, demanding to be fed. All we can say is go easy on the heat when keeping the beasts warm in the oven. Ours came out looking super yum but a tad dry to the point of dusty. A dusty pink pig is a sight to behold but not to taste. And the apple sauce and beer 'jus' servings were ridiculously small. Oh, in the interests of stopping the European Union descending into anarchy, can a humble Irishman like me please beg the proprietors to treat the mash not as the dark underbelly for those tinned sausages but with the love and care that the glorious potato deserves? Whack in some butter, hot milk and chopped onion to show that Germany still loves Ireland. I had read that the waiters had that Sydney disease real bad, that is, 'aloofitess' but we got the opposite. Lots of attention, friendly smiles and speedy service. Not sure what all the rituals were, like with cow bells, shot glasses on sticks and punters getting it on in the booths. The noise level was pretty high so not really the place to go for a romantic dinner but perhaps a good place to break up. 'What did you say...?'

Sadly, one of the worst schnitzels I've ever had

They try to be German. Not so good. The schnitzel was decent but not great (I recently moved to Hawaii after spending 13 years in Germany so I know German food/bier). The bratkartofflen (home fries) sucked. Their bier selection was okay but nothing spectacular. Hof Brau bier; not one of my favorite German biers. I guess for Australia, the quality is okay. The place wouldn't last in Germany.

The Bavarian Bier Café is the picture of sophisticated dining/drinking. What with all the soft lighting, beautiful décor, and polished staff, you might think you've stepped into a posh 18th century establishment. It's not, of course. It's as modern as they come. They serve boutique German beers, coupled with authentic German cuisine. Now, German cuisine has the reputation of being a little bland and heavy-handed, and, in a way, the food here is, but it's also subtly flavoursome (without being spicy or overpowering) and delicious. Obviously, it can all get a little too meaty, but hey, if Australian culture has taught me anything, it's that you people love your meat. However, the meal portions are a bit small for my liking, and it can get to be quite pricey, depending on what/how much you order. Once the night gets going, the Bier Café's atmosphere shifts into something a little more light and casual, which is nice. Of course, due to all the meat and beer, it attracts a largely male clientele, so if that's not your scene, there's plenty of other options around the CBD.

Fantastic value and brilliant atmospheric. Service was fast and the food was really nice - I had the chicken schnitzel (perfectly cooked) I will definitely go again!

Grab your lederhosen and your beer maiden outfits and experience food and drinks the German way. Absolutely loved this place. The snitzels are huge and I mean huge. And they are amazing... A little expensive but definitely worth it. Or just stick with the large beers. Always a great atmosphere and environment and the one in the city is always busy even on a Monday so come early.

    German beer! Mmmmmn

Just a quick pop in for a drink and seemed like an ok place, yet over priced and the food we saw come out didn't exactly wow us.

Inside wasn't bad, the table was big and the chairs comfortable. We were waited on immediately. Servers fly around like dancers, it's actually pretty impressive. Our food arrived in no time. My wife had fish and chips and I had lamb and rosemary pie. She enjoyed her meal. Mine was different than I've had before. It was still ok but I wouldn't order it again. Others would probably like it, it just wasn't for me. We didn't have any dessert but as you walk in the door they have some wonderful looking pies and cakes. Do yourself a favor and save room for one of those. I messed up and didn't try something. This is actually a really cool restaurant that I would like to try again. I wouldn't let one dish that didn't hit my taste buds keep me away.

I understand it can get a little busy at times too, so there might be a wait. PRO TIP: make an online reservation and get seated right away! I had a couple of goals when visiting Australia... and one of them was to try kangaroo. The Rocks Cafe delivers with their Kangaroo Filet! And you can get it gluten-free! The sauce is a bit rich for me, but you can brush some of the sauce off with your fork. If kangaroo is not your thing, then there are plenty of other options on the menu... and the crowd around us all looked pleased with their orders. After you are done with your meal, you just go to the front/reception area and pay your bill. Easy peasy! Overall rating: ****FOUR STARS**** Gluten-free rating: ****FOUR STARS****

A couple of my friends recently returned from Sydney, and they said if there was only one place…read morethey suggest I go to eat - it was Restaurant Hubert. Specifically the happy hour. So I did! They don't take reservations for their 5-6pm happy hour. You can only line up at 5pm when they open. We got there right before 5pm, and there were probably 10 to 12 people in line. Once the doors opened we were led downstairs to the bar area. It's a very dark, and feels like you've been transported to another time and place. We decided to try one of each of the food items on the happy hour: - Duck Parfait - Good. Classic French item and they do it well. - Brandade d'anguilles fumée - OK. I know it's eel, but wasn't very distinct from any other fish. My least favourite dish. - Saucisson Sec - Good. Simple. - Fleur de Courgette - Very good. Delicate and delicious. I should've ordered two of these. - Normandy Burger - Very good. The one item my friends raved about, and it was clear why. A burger with the best ingredients is hard to matched. I got the extra side of fries which is equally good. Best dish of the meal. Service was relatively good, except at one point they asked if I wanted mayo for my fries (very French) and I said yes, but it never came. Other than that, quite good. This was easily my favourite meal of my trip, holding up to high expectations. I would return on my next trip to Sydney.

I highly recommend getting here early to get a seat during Happy Hour and stay after to enjoy some live jazz after 6PM. The restaurant was easy to locate with a sign upfront. The entrance is just a door in the wall with spiraling stairs leading you to an underground jazz bar and restaurant. It's upscale and romantic, but several other people were dressed casually. We sat on a shared table with three other strangers until we ordered off the full menu and our Chicken Fricassée arrived. The service is top notch and everyone was attentive, polite, and kind. We started off with the happy hour menu and ordered the Duck Parfait. I didn't know what to expect. The croutons were crispy and delicate and the duck liver was easy to spread and airy. The Normandy Burger was juicy and the bread was fluffy. But the star of the night Chicken Fricassée - wow! Incredibly tender, juicy, and garlicy. The sauce had a mashed potato buttery, smooth texture. Absolute must get.
