I was getting a bit thirsty and wanted to try out some new brews. Got the Brown Sugar Pearl Boba Tea as it was the new kid on the block and was quite yummy. Sitting in the benches I noticed there was a large back area filled with VR machines I only experienced in Korea during the Olympics. The staff mentioned they were running a promo of $20 for 1 session. I experienced the Virtual Reality Arcade - Serious Sam 3 VR first person shooter which is quite intensive and a 30 minute workout within itself (was dripping sweat and out of breath). Thank god each session is bundled with a drink! Will come back to try out the different games and drinks they offer.

David Pecaut Square has been the festival's headquarters since its inception. (David Pecaut is also one of the founding members of the festival as well) It's a great event for everyone and really, Luminato has everything for just about everyone!! To simply put, it's a multi-disciplinary arts festival happening all around downtown Toronto that features variety of genres: anything from, classical music, dance, theatre, film visual arts, fashion food, you name it, it's probably here. Last year, 2011, the headlining performer was none other than Aretha Franklin!! What?!? This year it's gonna be Nelly Furtado and K'NAAN on the main stage! So come down and enjoy the show!! Food trucks, Art and Jazz... Amazing!…read more Stopped by on a Tuesday night at Luminato 2013 main site in Pecault Square to check out the really big disco ball ("One Thousand Speculations") and the food trucks. The idea of the disco ball seems real cheesy, but this installation is very impressive. Although I didn't stay long enough to see it lit up for the evening, I was able to get a picture of it hanging during the day and you can see a lot of Toronto. Plus with the CN tower in the background, it makes me appreciate the city even more. The food trucks lined up for the night were Buster's Sea Cove, Caplansky's and The Food Dudes. There were a lot of tables and seating in the food 'garden' right across the main stage. Buster's Sea Cove - Fish tacos - flavourful and spicey. I usually get the lobster roll but I've noticed that they're a bit skimpy with the lobster at the truck than at their main location (@ St. Lawrence Market) Caplansky's - Brisket slider, fries and gravy - brisket with coleslaw was messy, good and tangy, fries with gravy was surprisingly better than the regular stuff. Was hoping to get my hands on those delicious maple bacon donuts... But they ran out! Food Dudes - nothing on their menu was enticing... and the lady I saw in the truck applying deodorant didn't help... Eeewww! At the stage was Lady Son, a Latin (/Canadian) Salsa band Awesome to see and hear while having dinner outdoors on a beautiful Toronto evening. It was also nice to see some people bustin' out their samba/salsa/chacha moves. Luminato showcasing art, music and food makes me proud to be a Torontonian.

This was my first year going to the KHF because I happened to be in the area and I am SO glad I decided to check it out! I came at around 1pm on the first day (Saturday) so I braced myself for the lunch rush, but the lineups weren't THAT bad. Compared to other festivals like Night It Up, the longest lines here were only about 15 minutes long. I tried the takoyaki ($5) and aburi salmon roll ($5) from Kibo Sushi House and they were both very tasty. In fact, I think their takoyaki was one of the best I've ever had (even compared to sit-down restaurants)!! They managed to keep the outer shell crispy while dousing the top with delicious sauces, and each ball had a generous piece of octopus. I also got the large grilled oysters ($8 for 1/$20 for 4) and they were cooked very well, not to mention also slathered in a delicious chili garlic sauce. My boyfriend was so impressed by them that he contemplated buying another set of 4! Alas, the lineup got longer by then so we opted out. **EDIT**: I came back again today (Sunday) and they raised their prices to $8 for 1/$15 for 2/$20 for 3... I have to say, that's pretty shitty. I didn't stick around for the activities but I saw on their Facebook page that they had a huge lineup of performances, celebrity meet n greets, and other great things. Although the food is what enticed me the most and there weren't a lot of other types of vendors, I found this festival to be overall very enjoyable and would recommend others to check it out.

Harvest Festival (Hangawi) is celebrated on August 15th of the lunar calender which is similar to Chinese Moon Festival, which they consider to be their "Thanksgiving"! And to celebrate and give thanks, families are gathered together to eat, drink and dance! That's all I need to know! Korean performers, fashion shows, traditional dances, hip hop/singing competitions are held on the centre stage. There are also arm wrestling and wings eating competition. Food vendors offerings Korean comfort food all curiously either in orange or brownish colour: rice cake in hot sauce, sausages, bbq, fish cake and buns. Curiously St Louis has the largest food area selling chicken wings, ribs, corns and potatoes... Western comfort food! It was kind of fun watching families sharing their laughter and food, kids playing with each other, friends chilling.......... That's makes any Festival special!

It's an old Buddhist temple turned into an event space…read more That alone should tell you how cool it is. There are several rooms here, the centerpiece is the great hall... a wonderfully large room with a stage that's outstanding for theater troupes, lectures or large meetings. With it's massive space, interesting acoustics and good sight-lines, there's also the obvious... you could throw a killer party in here. There are other rooms on the main floor. It's a surprisingly good floor-plan for both separation of space and ease of use. Downstairs there are several breakout rooms, classrooms and a giant kitchen. The rumour is that the actual piano that Oscar Petersen learned on in Montreal is sitting detuned in the back of the main stage. Avant-garde groups in the city have been onto this place for a year. It's been rented for everything from conferences and showcases to math-groups and chess clubs. They'll work with you to arrange liquor permits, and are incredibly cool to partner with.

Located just a hop, skip or a stumble away from the Bathurst Subway station, an in an area with more than adequate street parking (within certain hours), 918 is a hidden event venue gem that you actually might mistake as a church - and you'd be right one bc this little beauty used to be a Buddhist temple! The aesthetic is a tad dated in some spots but you can tell they're working hard at modernizing the place more and more while retaining the original charm of the venue. The secondary room and basement are brand new, while the entrance way and the main "ball room" look more original. What I love about this spot? It's the perfect raw space, and you could literally plan anything from a wedding, gala, or trade show to even a concert or speaking engagement here. It's got that look that's the right fit for just about anything - just need to use your imagination!

Laughed and cried. Stories of Iranian students learning English in Iran. Range of characters and back stories. Beautiful telling of the power of words, the complexity of #language, the things we lose in translation, racialized perception and internalized racism... Oh so many lived experiences displayed in full here. Highly recommend everyone watched it while it's here until March 5! The theatre has a few auditoriums that are smaller, which provide an intimate setting for their productions. Often after shows, the cast and crew will mingle with audience in the lobby. The lobby area has seating, and a cafe. Note that no coat check is available here. So keep your bag and jackets small and light!

At…read morethe annual Thornhill Ribfest (July 26-28), they seem to know how to give people a good time by combining a handful of huge BBQ rib stands with a slew of food/shop vendors, ad booths, live stage and a kids zone too. One of the perks is the free admission, so I guess the economics do work when aligned with sponsors. We arrived at 11am Saturday to the festival ground with plenty of parking. Truth be told we were an hour early! No matter, the BBQ stands were ready and being early is good for scouting without a crowd. I kind of missed seeing the ribbers' trophies on display, as this was apparently not a BBQ competition. Multiple BBQ variations were offered by Oak & Barrel, Louisiana BBQ, Texas Jack's, Kentucky Smokehouse, Big Hank's Nashville-style and Memphis Blazin' BBQ. The grill master at the first one had a jolly time chiming away and putting on a fire show for the cameras. We noticed selection was the same at all of the impressive stands: BBQ ribs, chicken, pulled pork, coleslaw and beans. We opted for the Memphis combo of 1/3 rack of ribs, 1/4 chicken and pulled pork. Firm ribs didn't have much dry rub but spicy & sweet BBQ sauces were decent. Chicken was flavourful on the skin but meat was bland and firm. Lesson learned, stick to saucy ribs & pulled pork! Roaming the grass area, there were plenty of food options such as craft beer, fried chocolate bars, blooming onions, and funnel cake. The Filipino BBQ pork skewers were memorable, with drizzled sweet sauce, crispy skin and fat. We happily left the Thornhill Ribfest with a full lunch and a smooth fun experience.

The Thornhill Rib & Craft Beer Fest was held at 1441 Clark Avenue West (on Dufferin north of Steeles) and right next to Vaughan Secondary School. It was a three-day ribfest from July 27 to 29. We attended on the first day and arrived there just after 6 p.m. and before the weekend crowds started coming in. It was a very well put together event with a quick security checkpoint at the entrance (and free ample parking at the lot of the secondary school). Upon entering, we received free popcorn to taste! It was warm and a bit sweet. Right away, we lined up for the first ribber that we saw, which was the New York BBQ one. We were hungry and it really didn't matter too much which one we lined up at. There were five ribbers in total: New York BBQ, Oak & Barrel, Kentucky Smokehouse, Louisiana BBQ, and Memphis Blazin' BBQ. We ordered the 1/2 rack with 1/4 chicken since I was curious about the chicken. It actually started raining halfway into the line-up and I'm so glad that we had brought umbrellas to shield us from the sudden downpour. Luckily, after we ordered and found a seat to eat the ribs underneath one of the tents, the rain and rain clouds went away. The rack of ribs were fall-off-the-bone and the meat was quite 'shredded' and it was good for the most part. The chicken was overly burnt but the meat underneath the skin was somewhat moist. Next, we got a beer from the craft beer stalls. Each drink ticket was $7. There were quite a lot of them and I chose the cute-sounding "Bear Hug IPA" beer from Market Brewing Co. It had a fusion of tangerine, pineapple, and evergreen notes. We took a stroll around the other food trucks and food vendors, which was quite varied! There were a lot of people lining up for the Blooming Onions stroll and if it weren't for the fact that it was just the two of us, we would have wanted to try it too. We settled for a buttered corn on the cob from one of the stalls which my mom enjoyed very much. We returned to the ribbers and this time lined up for the Louisiana BBQ. We also got a 1/2 rack from here. The line-up was just as long as the first one. My mom actually wanted to try the beef ribs, but we ended up just getting the pork ribs. After this, we lined up at the Memphis Blazin' BBQ stall. This line-up was a lot longer than the other ones, but we saw how the ribbers really took time to make sure the ribs were cooked well. We still ended up with pork ribs (since the beef ribs didn't look as popular), but this time we got a full rack of pork ribs instead. We sat down with the two sets of pork ribs and chowed down. I really liked the Memphis Blazin' BBQ as the meat on the ribs was so firm! The Louisiana BBQ one was good too and had a sweeter sauce. We really had a large ribs feast that night (and the next few days too for lunch).
