Great school with great people. Received my blue belt here. My daughter also attended classes throughout junior high. I had move on myself because of work scheduling. But if the schedule meets your needs. Give it a go and have fun! Than you, Sam read more

I have been with Battle Control for a long time, say maybe about 15 years or so from their old location off of Tully to this newer, quieter, a bit more secluded location. While the location is serene and all the members super friendly and encouraging, don't let that fool you, you'll get get a great workout and learn some cool moves along the way! Sir Greg is a phenomenal instructor that really takes the time to go over details of the techniques he's teaching; he encourages students to watch the demonstration from all different angles to ensure they understand the technique and works with different body types to show the beauty and effectiveness of the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He and his "higher belts" (Brown and Black belts), walk around and help give pointers during practice. There is also always ample time at the end of class to get some practical sparring in to solidify what you learned for the day. Many members are eager to "roll" (what BJJ folks call sparring) and, depending on your level, are willing to have a more guided, gentle roll or an all out contest of skill and athleticism. The environment is equal parts jovial and fun as well as studious and competitive. Super family friendly too! They have class for children for as young as they can still pay attention for hour with some guidance (haha). I have personally seen some somewhat timid or uncoordinated folks, much like myself haha, really come into their and get comfortable in their bodies and be able to move and act with total aplomb and poise. Definitely give them a try today! You won't regret it. :) read more

If you're looking for Jiu-jitsu that works in the real world, look no further. The Professor provides very detailed explanations and focuses on movements that are highly effective in live sparring. What really sets this gym apart, though, is the bond between the students. The camaraderie here makes the tough sessions enjoyable. It feels like a second family on the mats. Five stars all the way! read more

I've trained all over the country. I was invited by a friend to attend a BJJ class and had a wonderful time. The class format is brilliant and it gets no better than Professor Gregory. If you have kids look no further. He will leave an incredibly positive influence on you or your family's mental development. It gets no better than this. Just go. read more

I have tried a few different Martial arts places over my lifetime. On many occasions the instructors thug like mentality of acting tough, passive aggressively saying how they can hurt or maim you and my amazing ability to somehow attract the instructors disgust had really turned me off from Martial arts. I was recommended to check out Battle Control by a friend who had been going to another place I had recently quit for some of the above reasons. I was reluctant but I decided to check it out and enrolled my kids. The instructor offered to train me as well for a very fair price though. I actually craved to learn martial arts that were effective, but from an honorable person. Not a thug. I had to see who this guy really was first. My instructor Greg Lara showed himself to be an honorable man. He begins most classes with a prayer (sometimes we forget) to Jesus Christ. He pushes everyone to do their best but we train with a respect for each other. I think this is a great start as Judeo-Christian values are in humility and proper treatment of your fellow man. The value of this on the practice mats cannot be over emphasized. You are learning to strangle and destroy joints of the human body. You need to be working alongside people who have a sense of justice a desire to protect their sparring partners. I have been doing jiu jitsu at Battle Control for 4 going on 5 years now. I have been promoted to purple belt and am able to use my skill to bring down and restrain or worse grown men, some outweighing me by 50 or more pounds. The skills I learned first came in handy as a bouncer and now as a security professional I know that if necessary I can take an attacker down ( I have not had to use it in regular security). I also have helped to teach as a substitute in the kids classes on occasion and I think this is a great place to get good quality instruction. read more

Battle Control - Instructor Greg tying up one of the kids wrestling shoe for a challenge match. - Martial Arts Near Me - San Jose, California

This is the second year that I have sent my two kids to Battle Control. We contemplated over multiple options around the area for the martial arts program with goals probably similar to any school parents: self-control, self-defense, and strength body and heart. Before coming here, we did not even have a proper clue what the teachings and trainings of Battle Control is about. Now I can summarize for future parents and kids: It is about (A) physical strength by way of intensive Brazilian jiu-jitsu + Boxing practice + Wrestling practice with light-weight, well-supervised sparring. (B) mental and spiritual discipline by way of listening more than talking, respecting everyone by expressing, and constantly humbling oneself through prayers to God. Sir Greg Lara is a great master. He is kind, generous, deeply-thoughtful, balanced. The moment I met him, I developed a form of respect to him - not only as a teacher for my kids, but also as another great man that I came to know of. It is a kind of wonder how kids love this strong person. After every strict training sessions, young kids run to Sir Greg Lara who expresses no greater smile and care to them. I think having Sir Greg Lara as a martial arts teacher is a blessing to many. We fell in love with Brazilian jiu-jitsu, my boys are really stronger than before, they are confident, they love martial arts. They grow to be strong leaders for the next generation. read more

We have been looking for the right place for our daughter (9 years old) to train at. With technology and current events around school and friends, we felt that a martial art would help prepare her with confidence, discipline, and self defense. Her interest is in BJJ, and we found BATTLE CONTROL offered that. On top of BJJ, they have a stand up class also, which is a BIG plus. She has been training now for several months and enjoys the challenge and focus in both arts. Sir Greg is focused on teaching the young, and older students, the fundamentals of the art and has been a great role model and influence for each pupil. In summary, I recommend BATTLE CONTROL to anyone that is serious, and willing to learn self defense. We enjoy the family atmosphere and training sessions so much that my daughter, son, and myself ALL train here at BATTLE CONTROL. read more

My son is in the middle of his second year learning and practicing Jiu Jitsu at Battle Control. It has been a great experience for him to become dedicated to something he not only enjoys, but has the opportunity to develop as a skill that will last a lifetime. He is one of the youngest in the adult class and Mr. Lara is very encouraging and patient with him. I love the fact that when everyone enters the building, pride is left behind. The more advanced belts mentor the novices, even in the middle of an intense roll, to help them improve technique. All-in-all it is a wholesome, friendly atmosphere and I'm thankful my son started his Jiu Jitsu journey here. read more

Battle Control - My Son Learning some BJJ from the best - Martial Arts Near Me - San Jose, California

This place is bad a$$. The whole group of guys and gals are wonderful and made me feel very at home on my first day. Greg is one of the most genuine instructors I have ever met and the amount of one-on-one time he spends with his students is just incredible. If you're looking for a real sense of camaraderie, great instruction, and a really fun way to stay healthy or become healthy; this place is for you! read more

The best kept secret in San Jose for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The truth is I saw Battle Control come up on searches for BJJ schools in the South Bay over the years, but the name led me to believe this was a school focused on competition. I'm older and my body does not heal as quickly as it used to. Don't make the same mistake I made. Five years from now you will look back and realized you missed out on a lot of great rolls and friendships. One of the scariest parts of starting a new martial arts is going to all the different schools and trying the classes. Most places the regulars will look at you like fresh kill or ignore you all together. It's different here. Everyone I've met is friendly and willing to help. Professor Lara has a very calm demeanor that comes from years of experience and expertise. You will quickly realize that you are not only joining a school or a team, you are joining a family. The students at this school mirror Professor Lara. They are humble, considerate, and very skilled in BJJ. Everyone here will work with you at your pace. After observing one of the children's classes, I pulled my two girls from a different BJJ school so they can learn from Professor Lara. He runs the children's class with strict discipline. Something that was missing from the other school. Children here listen and observe without being disruptive. The girls have learned more in the short time they've trained here than the year they spent at the other school. If you are serious about learning BJJ, this should be on your short list of schools to visit. This is a great school for the whole family. So now the secret is out. Put on your gi and lets get in some good rolls. read more

Battle control isn't just a martial arts school but, also a way of life. Every time you walk into class, you will be challenged and when you leave, you will come out better than you were previously. Sensei Greg is great teacher and friend who has a well involved family who supports him and our school. The atmosphere is very welcoming in fact, I always feel like I am walking into my own home and it very well is. You will get along right away with the other students. We are all very courteous and humble. I have not seen this anywhere else. I have been going here for a month and it keeps getting better. I have gone through a Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun school so, I have a bit of knowledge of how schools are and martial arts in general. We are not a big school so, you will not feel like just another face. Tuition rates are awesome! Just have a seat with Sensei Greg and discuss it, I am positive he will work with you. If you live in San Jose and want to learn Brazilian jiu jitsu, this is the place to learn. Come in on week days at 730PM for a free try out. You will be back! ;) read more

Great MMA school for all ages. The monthly cost is very reasonable not only for the knowledge being gained from training with great teachers like Sensei's Greg and Doyle, but also because they are very technical and patient with what they teach it's almost like having your own personal trainer. This is a great advantage compared to a big school. You want to have the teacher available as you are practicing what he just taught. This is possible here and this will help you be a more technical with your moves. Some people prefer mat time over technique but what good is all the hard work you put in if you can't apply the technique properly. Everyone is helpful and more than enthusiastic and patient to show beginners and advanced people the proper steps of how to apply the techniques. Both teachers are very knowledgable in the arts of BJJ, Tae-kwon Do, Muay Thai... Then again it IS an MMA school. Nothing but a great training brotherhood and environment is what you will find here. You will most definitely feel welcomed here. If this is your first time trying out martial arts, there's no better school to begin and continue your training than here. Don't shy out if you don't know anything martial arts. Nobody in here will judge you but what we all will do is train with you day after day to better you and one another read more

I was looking for a judo or jiujitsu school for my 13-year-old daughter that wasn't just a bunch of calisthenics or useless acrobatics. I am very pleased to find Greg Lara's Battle Control. For the first time in her life, my daughter absolutely LOVES going to martial arts class -- so much that she now wishes her middle school has a girl's wrestling program (they don't)! Where some martial arts training centers tend towards a little bit of thugishness (is that a word?), I sincerely appreciate Greg Lara's emphasis on manners, etiquette and just being a good person -- all while learning very practical applications for self-defense. read more

Have 2 kids a boy & girl, ages 10 & 5 and they love coming here. They make the learning fun and very hands on. The best part is that everyone (students & parents) are welcoming and instantly part of the family :-) A true value on all fronts. read more

I couldn't ask for a better facility to train at then Battle Control. I came in with no prior martial arts experience and have tried trial lessons at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy). It's not a huge facility like AKA, it has a smaller school feel, but the mat space is adequate. Instructor Greg Lara's teaching style caters to different type of personalities. Can't ask for a nicer and more sincere teacher. Everyone respects each other and we all treat each other like actual brothers and sisters. No one's ego gets the best of them here, everyone is humble and ready to learn. I would recommend checking Battle Control out if you're interested in BJJ or MMA in general. read more

If you are someone looking for a family friendly environment to study the Martial Art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or somewhere to introduce Martial Arts to your children, Battle control offers the best of both worlds. With top notch instruction and personable instructors, individual/personal growth is important to instructors and other practitioners. Personally, I have been training with Battle Control for at least 4 years; although I have been roughed up from time to time it has made stronger as a practitioner, athlete, and a person. All the training partners I have had have all been very friendly and competitive. In my opinion, one of the best Jiu-jitsu schools in the Bay area. read more

My name is Jay Auen, I'm a 4 Time sport karate black belt world champion and a BJJ brown belt. I have trained several world champions & the best of all them would be Mr. Greg Lara. We have been friends for over 25 years and he is an outstanding Christian brother who takes Martial Arts seriously. I say this because in life he is the closest to giving 100%. Greg and I have trained together for as long as I have owned my school (20 years) All Sport Martial Arts in South San Jose and we have learned a lot from each other. I admire his principles, his love for God/Jesus and the way he treats his students like family. I enrolled my 5.5 year old son in a morning class this summer. (T/TH 10-11am) So far he has taken 7 classes and I am amazed and what he has learned. The owner/teacher Greg Lara does a fabulous job teaching. He has the right balance between discipline, focus, and teaching respect while having fun with the kids. His care is genuine and the kids know it! I love the physical challenge the class is for my son, but I also love the mental focus and discipline it teaches him. His character is being just as sharpened as his physical body. It is a great value and I highly recommend it. read more
