I have been with Battle Control for a long time, say maybe about 15 years or so from their old location off of Tully to this newer, quieter, a bit more secluded location. While the location is serene and all the members super friendly and encouraging, don't let that fool you, you'll get get a great workout and learn some cool moves along the way! Sir Greg is a phenomenal instructor that really takes the time to go over details of the techniques he's teaching; he encourages students to watch the demonstration from all different angles to ensure they understand the technique and works with different body types to show the beauty and effectiveness of the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He and his "higher belts" (Brown and Black belts), walk around and help give pointers during practice. There is also always ample time at the end of class to get some practical sparring in to solidify what you learned for the day. Many members are eager to "roll" (what BJJ folks call sparring) and, depending on your level, are willing to have a more guided, gentle roll or an all out contest of skill and athleticism. The environment is equal parts jovial and fun as well as studious and competitive. Super family friendly too! They have class for children for as young as they can still pay attention for hour with some guidance (haha). I have personally seen some somewhat timid or uncoordinated folks, much like myself haha, really come into their and get comfortable in their bodies and be able to move and act with total aplomb and poise. I have tried a few different Martial arts places over my lifetime. On many occasions the instructors thug like mentality of acting tough, passive aggressively saying how they can hurt or maim you and my amazing ability to somehow attract the instructors disgust had really turned me off from Martial arts. I was recommended to check out Battle Control by a friend who had been going to another place I had recently quit for some of the above reasons. I was reluctant but I decided to check it out and enrolled my kids. The instructor offered to train me as well for a very fair price though. I actually craved to learn martial arts that were effective, but from an honorable person. Not a thug. I had to see who this guy really was first. My instructor Greg Lara showed himself to be an honorable man. He begins most classes with a prayer (sometimes we forget) to Jesus Christ. He pushes everyone to do their best but we train with a respect for each other. I think this is a great start as Judeo-Christian values are in humility and proper treatment of your fellow man. The value of this on the practice mats cannot be over emphasized. You are learning to strangle and destroy joints of the human body. You need to be working alongside people who have a sense of justice a desire to protect their sparring partners. I have been doing jiu jitsu at Battle Control for 4 going on 5 years now. I have been promoted to purple belt and am able to use my skill to bring down and restrain or worse grown men, some outweighing me by 50 or more pounds. The skills I learned first came in handy as a bouncer and now as a security professional I know that if necessary I can take an attacker down ( I have not had to use it in regular security). This is the second year that I have sent my two kids to Battle Control. We contemplated over multiple options around the area for the martial arts program with goals probably similar to any school parents: self-control, self-defense, and strength body and heart. Before coming here, we did not even have a proper clue what the teachings and trainings of Battle Control is about. Now I can summarize for future parents and kids: It is about (A) physical strength by way of intensive Brazilian jiu-jitsu + Boxing practice + Wrestling practice with light-weight, well-supervised sparring. We have been looking for the right place for our daughter (9 years old) to train at. The truth is I saw Battle Control come up on searches for BJJ schools in the South Bay over the years, but the name led me to believe this was a school focused on competition. I'm older and my body does not heal as quickly as it used to. Don't make the same mistake I made. Battle control isn't just a martial arts school but, also a way of life. Every time you walk into class, you will be challenged and when you leave, you will come out better than you were previously. Sensei Greg is great teacher and friend who has a well involved family who supports him and our school. The atmosphere is very welcoming in fact, I always feel like I am walking into my own home and it very well is. You will get along right away with the other students. We are all very courteous and humble. I have not seen this anywhere else. I have been going here for a month and it keeps getting better. I have gone through a Jeet Kune Do and Wing Chun school so, I have a bit of knowledge of how schools are and martial arts in general. Great MMA school for all ages. The monthly cost is very reasonable not only for the knowledge being gained from training with great teachers like Sensei's Greg and Doyle, but also because they are very technical and patient with what they teach it's almost like having your own personal trainer. This is a great advantage compared to a big school. You want to have the teacher available as you are practicing what he just taught. This is possible here and this will help you be a more technical with your moves. Some people prefer mat time over technique but what good is all the hard work you put in if you can't apply the technique properly. Everyone is helpful and more than enthusiastic and patient to show beginners and advanced people the proper steps of how to apply the techniques. Both teachers are very knowledgable in the arts of BJJ, Tae-kwon Do, Muay Thai... Then again it IS an MMA school. Nothing but a great training brotherhood and environment is what you will find here. You will most definitely feel welcomed here. If this is your first time trying out martial arts, there's no better school to begin and continue your training than here. I couldn't ask for a better facility to train at then Battle Control. I came in with no prior martial arts experience and have tried trial lessons at AKA (American Kickboxing Academy). It's not a huge facility like AKA, it has a smaller school feel, but the mat space is adequate. Instructor Greg Lara's teaching style caters to different type of personalities. Can't ask for a nicer and more sincere teacher. Everyone respects each other and we all treat each other like actual brothers and sisters. I enrolled my 5.5 year old son in a morning class this summer. (T/TH 10-11am) So far he has taken 7 classes and I am amazed and what he has learned. The owner/teacher Greg Lara does a fabulous job teaching. He has the right balance between discipline, focus, and teaching respect while having fun with the kids. His care is genuine and the kids know it! I love the physical challenge the class is for my son, but I also love the mental focus and discipline it teaches him.
