Instructor Greg tying up one of the kids wrestling shoe for a challenge match.

I have tried a few different Martial arts places over my lifetime. On many occasions the instructors thug like mentality of acting tough, passive aggressively saying how they can hurt or maim you and my amazing ability to somehow attract the instructors disgust had really turned me off from Martial arts. I was recommended to check out Battle Control by a friend who had been going to another place I had recently quit for some of the above reasons. I was reluctant but I decided to check it out and enrolled my kids. The instructor offered to train me as well for a very fair price though. I actually craved to learn martial arts that were effective, but from an honorable person. Not a thug. I had to see who this guy really was first. My instructor Greg Lara showed himself to be an honorable man. He begins most classes with a prayer (sometimes we forget) to Jesus Christ. He pushes everyone to do their best but we train with a respect for each other. I think this is a great start as Judeo-Christian values are in humility and proper treatment of your fellow man. The value of this on the practice mats cannot be over emphasized. You are learning to strangle and destroy joints of the human body. You need to be working alongside people who have a sense of justice a desire to protect their sparring partners. I have been doing jiu jitsu at Battle Control for 4 going on 5 years now. I have been promoted to purple belt and am able to use my skill to bring down and restrain or worse grown men, some outweighing me by 50 or more pounds. The skills I learned first came in handy as a bouncer and now as a security professional I know that if necessary I can take an attacker down ( I have not had to use it in regular security). I also have helped to teach as a substitute in the kids classes on occasion and I think this is a great place to get good quality instruction.

We have been looking for the right place for our daughter (9 years old) to train at. With technology and current events around school and friends, we felt that a martial art would help prepare her with confidence, discipline, and self defense. Her interest is in BJJ, and we found BATTLE CONTROL offered that. On top of BJJ, they have a stand up class also, which is a BIG plus. She has been training now for several months and enjoys the challenge and focus in both arts. Sir Greg is focused on teaching the young, and older students, the fundamentals of the art and has been a great role model and influence for each pupil. In summary, I recommend BATTLE CONTROL to anyone that is serious, and willing to learn self defense. We enjoy the family atmosphere and training sessions so much that my daughter, son, and myself ALL train here at BATTLE CONTROL.

All the Coaches are encouraging, inclusive, and positive. They model exemplary skills, willingly share technical guidance, and promote discipline and healthy goal setting. Coach Apple is inspiring. Her love of martial arts is evident in her students. Students who have become instructors, or return during break from college to train for their next Black Belt degree. She cultivates a family atmosphere through activities outside of class to build community and a sense of belonging. We are thrilled our children have continued learning here at Primetime. Thanks so much!

Five Stars - Warm, Supportive, and Community-Focused!…read more This gratitude post is long overdue for Founder and Coach Apple Morris and her incredible Primetime Martial Arts staff! I first met Coach Apple as a troop leader for a Girl Scout troop in South San Jose. From the start, she went above and beyond, creating beautiful custom bags and donating fun supplies for each Girl Scout--a meaningful touch that made their journey with us even more special. Apple's generosity didn't stop there. She opened her studio to host a troop meeting where our scouts earned their Courageous and Strong petal. This unique, hands-on experience empowered our girls to grow, develop important skills, and gain confidence. At the end of June this year, something truly special happened: my daughter officially became a member of the Primetime family. She had been looking forward to joining Coach Apple and her team since attending that Girl Scouts meeting more than a year ago. By the end of October, my daughter had her first belt test. She was promoted to orange belt, and we can't wait to see her continue to grow, which I can confidently say is because of Coach Apple and her staff. Apple and her team consistently go above and beyond--creating meaningful experiences, fostering growth, and supporting the community. Their expertise, patience, and kindness make a lasting impact. They open their hearts through holiday food drives, fun gatherings, and fundraising events, truly creating a family-like environment. Every time I watch the coaches with the students, I am impressed by their skill, dedication, and the way they nurture every one, meeting them where they need to be at that point in time. We are so grateful to be part of the Primetime Martial Arts community!

I wasn't very happy about it but I think the studio is trying their best. Maybe they could not find enough instructors that fit their criteria. The main instructor does not have the most clear speaking and his voice is low. The result is that I have to pay close attention to understand his instructions. Not how the little ones can follow up. I see my son usually just follows what other kids are doing instead of hearing and responding to the instructions. These are red flags. Now I think of it, I should have talked to the studio about these concerns. But I did not. What was really upsetting and surprising to me is that one day the main instructor talked to me about my son's inattention and disruptive behaviors and stated that if he doesn't improve, they will remove him from the class. I was a bit shocked. My son is like most 6 years old active boy, who is not best at following the instructions in a big class. However, this is their first attempt to "help" him. Yet, it came with a warning/threat, if he doesn't improve, he will be removed from the class. I can think of several ways to support him. 1. We could position him in the first of three rows of students, making sure he could hear clearly and get frequent eye contact from the instructor to help him to stay focused. 2. We could reduce the class size or increase the green belt helpers who can assist in helping the kids to learn the moves and stay focused. 3. The studio could at least talk to parents about how to support the student ONCE before threatening that they are going to remove him from the class. I'm really disappointed. My son loves martial arts and wants to learn. He does struggle with attention, like a lot of 6 years old. But I think he deserves a little more support than what the studio is providing. This feedback is directed toward the silver creek campus. Not sure how other campuses are doing. I'm going to try to talk to the instructor and see if it will help to solve the problem. I will come back to edit my review if the result restores my confidence in this place.
